Who's Got The Clap?
Sweet Love
Review: Deep house imprint Ornate reaches its landmark 10th release with YSE (pronounced 'easy' in case you were wondering), a man who in his own words "enjoys nicely syncopated rhythms, heavy melodies, outgoing quirkiness and a quality glass full of cheap Brandy and Coke - hold the ice", all of which - bar the cheap Brandy and Coke - are in full effect on this frankly awesome Drawn At Dawn EP. "Gelly" and the mischievously titled "Who's Got The Clap?" vie for your attention on the A Side, with the mechanical chords, sparkling groove and masterfully arranged vocal samples of the latter proving to be the highlight. Sprawled across the B Side you'll find a Chi-town bassline flexing against dreamy Motor City atmospherics and some nice pan pot percussion.

Around '94
Like A
So Down!
Get It Started
Review: Parisian label My Love Is Underground has not put a foot wrong since its debut release from Nathaniel X back in early 2010. Since then we've had the Paris Underground Trax 12" by an anonymous (not for long) producer; and now we see Jerzzey Boy pop up with their first release under since 1993. That's 18 years. Where have these guys been in that time? Surely not doing anything more important than producing sumptuous house records like this. Anyway, consider our caps doffed to MLIU, who awake Curtis Edwards and George Lockett from their production slumber/hibernation with the Lost Cuts Part 1 EP. Just like all previous output on the label, there's no filler, with the old school house keys of "Around 94" complemented by the equally retro vocals of "Like A" on the A Side. There's just as much fire on the flip, with the jacking rhythm of "So Down!" and emotive deepness of "Get It Started" - indeed the vocals on the latter mark it out as the favourite at Juno HQ. Essential.

Just You (Matthew & Kates remix)
Review: Just over a year after it launched, Jay Shepeard's Retrofit presents its fifth release, with the label boss teaming up once again with Matthew Burton for a quartet of classy deepness you'd expect from the imprint. "Liberal Zee" begins in decidedly quirky fashion, stripped down but live sounding, multiple bass lines plucked beneath off kilter percussion. Throw in some cowbell and you have this strange but wonderful house jam. "Just You" proves to be a pensive counterpart, with a subtley rasping jacking rhythm gently impinging on the bottom heavy groove as the sombre vocal refrain repeats itself over and over. Those seeking something immediate should head for the B Side and "Merked" which unfolds excellently into a hypnotic deep house groove once the warm keys are introduced. Finally, Burton teams up with fellow Retrofit cohort Kate Rathod for a remix of "Just You" that jacks all the way to the run out groove!

Here's Your Trance, Now Dance! (8:37)
Here's Your Trance, Now Dance! (Shadow Ray remix) (10:18)
Review: Absolute beast of a track from Omar S here - a real statement of intent for the FXHE boss and a shoe in for those end of year lists we all like to indulge in. "Here's Your Trance Now Dance!" is a pretty self explanatory title as the waves of glistening synth patterns that rise throughout are truly trance inducing. Beneath this constantly ascending processing of gleeful melodic touches is simplistic yet delicious sounding crisp machine rhythms, subtle arpeggios and infectiously warm bass nudges. This is a track that bears repeat listen through headphones to let the magic fully seep in so imagine the devastation it will cause at 2am in a sweaty basement somewhere. Essential.

1Dan - "Foundations"
Bittersuite - "Squeeze In"
Miles Sagnia - "Can We Heal Them?"
Review: Atmospheric Existence Recordings keep up their annual release rate with label boss Miles Sagnia inviting 1Dan and Bittersuite to join him on only the third release. Newcomer 1Dan opens proceedings with the sprawling soft machine funk flex of "Foundations", a track driven by gutter deep bass movements, steppy syncopation and rich sonic textures that no doubt helped influence the title of the EP. On the flip Bittersuite step forward with the upwards acid dub pressure of "Squeeze In" which steadily accrues an acidic overtone before a delightful left turn into a futuristic mechano soul rhythmic thrust. It's left to Sagnia to provide the final moment with the tightly relentless throb of "Can We Heal Them" that slowly reveals its inner acid brilliance.

Deep House
Review: Spanish label Downbeat, who gained our eternal gratitude in 2010 for coaxing a production out of Detroit legend Mike Huckaby, set up their stall for 2011 with this EP from DaRand Land. Just like Huckaby, who once noted the key to real deep house was all about "warm colourful sounds, emotional chords and melodies that strike a feeling of peace within the listener", the Buffalo born producer offers up five unnamed tracks positively dripping with these principles. Although everything here is worthy of mention, it's "Track 2" and "Track 4" that linger in the memory longest - the former for its cosy chords and bassline and the latter for it's Larry Heard-esque atmospherics and decadent synth washes.

Little Bit More
Another Thing
Review: Veteran UK act Inland KnightS team up with Derby duo Da Sunlounge for a ninth volume of ever so slightly cheeky deep house refixes on the Borrowed imprint. "A Little Bit More" craftily reworks one of last year's most eponymous pop tracks from a peroxide hit machine that featured the rapping talents of a daisy age legend and mouthy newcomer. Heavily filtered and driven by low bass frequencies, it's one of those tracks that will make people do a double take. Complementing this on the B Side is a lolloping E Funk style rework of the best legs in the business's most famous track. The object of many a rework and re-edit by everyone from Theo Parrish to Danny Krivit over the years, it's to the credit of all involved that "Another Thing" brings something different to the table.

Takin It Back
Takin It Back (94' mix)
Strains Of Knowledge
Takin It Back (Agnes - BakeRy mixx)
Review: Berlin duo Chubby Dubz come correct with some old school warehouse rattlers for STHLM AUDIO. Those liking their house music filled with plenty of 808s and drum rolls should indulge their senses in the 94 Mix of "Takin' It Back" which replaces the sultry rasp of the original mix with a spinal bump that can't help to satisfy. The heady keyboard stabs and reverberant Gil Scott-Heron doing 90s house MCing vibes only add to the authenticity. The mood continues on the flip with the bottom heavy crispness of "Strains Of Knowledge" all warm bass patterns, tightly wound drum programming, hushed melodic fractures and more vocal leanings. Columbian producer Agnes completes the set with a remix of "Takin It Back" that realigns the groove for those that prefer their house music to be serious.

The Warm
Dearly Beloved
Dearly Beloved (DJ Nature remix)
Review: Seattle producers Zepp001 return to Delusions Of Grandeur for their first release since 2009's warmly received Don't Sleep. Here, they offer up two more originals in their distinctive, melodic style, plus a flipside remix from DJ Nature. Lead cut "The Warm" is a sprightly, other-worldly effort full of alien melodies and nagging, high register chords (think Deep Space Orchestra), while "Dearly Beloved" twists warped chords and far out nu-disco synths around a bubbling low-end groove. The real killer, though, is DJ Nature's rub of "Dearly Beloved", which brilliantly re-casts the original as a dubbed out, jazz-flecked deep houser.

Simoncino - "Dance"
Nicholas - "Our Hope"
Nicholas - "Love Sanctuary"
Simoncino - "Let It Loose"
Review: Two of the deep house/disco scene's most hyped young producers are brought together on this excellent little four-tracker for Ourvision. As the title suggests, the emphasis here is firmly on the analogue and old skool, with Italians Simoncino and Nicholas offering two late night flavoured bumpers apiece. The former's tracks are typically dreamy and loved-up, coming on like a cross between Mr Fingers and very early Italian house. Nicholas' offerings, meanwhile, focus more on the vocal end of the spectrum, emphasizing bleep melodies and heavy analogue basslines. We're not sure whether these are edits or originals; either way, they're delicious.

Dirtiest Clean (original mix)
Dirtiest Clean (Delano Smiths Dirty dub)
For You
Review: Daniel Solar is a rising talent whose auspicious work for No More Hits, Dikso and Sleazy Beats precede this latest impressive outing. The fact the Berlin based producer is the latest to drop some jams for Undertones speaks volumes alone; after all this is an imprint that's treated your feet to releases from the likes of Red Rack'em, KiNK and Delano Smith. This Dirtiest Clean EP is afforded extra incentive by the inclusion of a remix from the aforementioned Delano Smith. The title track opens proceedings and demonstrates Solar's ease at crafting an infectious house groove from the intricate arrangement of frosted organ stabs and a surfeit of female vocal snippets. The gently undulating pads add some emotive depth too! The accompanying remix from Delano Smith ramps up the BPM and switches the focus to imbuing those emotive pads with some extra kick and does a pretty effective peak time job. Solar even finds room to indulge his previously shown disco side with the sultry mid tempo 80s bump of "For You".

Battle For Middle You (Maurice Donovan dub)
Ask Yourself (Midland remix)
Review: PMR set the bar high with their first release from Bristol's flame haired tyke Julio Bashmore, and the label promises much more with material from L-Vis 1990 and Two Inch Punch in the coming months. A further flex of credentials is shown on this twelve, with two of the tracks that made up Bashmore's debut getting the remix treatment from the Leeds House Mafia, David Kennedy and Midland. Kennedy adopts the Chicago House legend alias of Maurice Donovan to remix "Battle For Middle You", adding a certain drunk charm to those neon synth lines, whilst there's a satisfying crunch to the beats. Complementing this is a superlative reworking of "Ask Yourself" from rising talent Midland which retains the core brilliance of the original but dips it in a sumptuous sonic mist.

Setting Sun
Review: Nottingham house dons Bleep District add the Drop Music imprint to a CV that includes releases for Ornate, Lost My Dog and Amenti with the emphasis still very much on the funk heavy deep house grooves lacking in po faced intent. This is no more evident on the Pigs & Troughs EP than on the chunky sounding opener "Colours" which is characterised by big punchy drums, vague echoes of cowbell and heavy implementation of vocal samples amidst the smile inducing bassline. The equally substantial groove of "Escape Goat" really takes hold when the retro big room bleepy stabs drop into the mix, whilst "Prepay The DJ" shows Bleep District in more staccato, percussion heavy almost DJ Sneak mood.

Review: Those of you who, like us, revel in the return to prominence of piano driven house thumpers will have no doubt heard the 2009 anthem "Diskadenz" by some chap or chapette called Ike. The mysterious producer returns to the Philpot imprint for some 2011 heat, with the Supernatural EP. Dubby rhythms, bongos, shuffling hats and tense mechanical strings combine to hypnotic effect on "The Mole", which is marked by a killer spoken word vocal hook. "Supernatural" and "Ribbons" compete for your attention on the B Side, with the soupy analogue chug of the latter the highlight here at Juno HQ.

Gliese 581g
Science Fiction
Review: Absolutely gorgeous release from the fledgling Swedish imprint Aniara Recordings which sees the return of Genius Of Time with two expertly arranged productions that demand your full attention. "Gliese 581g" might hint at the astrological leanings of Genius Of Love, but what is clear is an innate ability to craft hypnotic, fluid analogue grooves that more than retain your attention despite being entirely instrumental - a criticism of much of what passes between the genre barriers of contemporary disco and deep house releases. Essentially "Gliese 581g" is a gloriously elongated ten minutes of music that gently saunters through different musical movements with nonchalant ease. Naturally the flipside embellishment "Science Fiction" is just as impressive, jetting off on an intergalactic e funk saunter through snapping drums, infectious percussion and laser beams of analogue effects. Kudos too for the entirely far too creepy artwork that adorns this release.

Native Sound - "Into Tha Etha"
Review: Brooklyn's Cortelyou Recordings claims to be on a mission to release great house from around the world, be it from Detroit, Chicago, Berlin, Johannesburg or London. On The Corner Volume One, can be seen as a mission statement then. It features four varied cuts, each exploring a different area of house, from four different producers. James Duncan kicks things off with a bumpin', old skool piano number, before Alex Agore goes chunky and lo-slung on the hip-house influenced "Pimp Stomp". Nottingham's Red Rack'em weighs in with the ultra-deep "Fellini" (Italo art house anyone?), before Native Sound go all strange and druggy on the afterhours flavoured "Into Tha Ethaa". Impressive stuff.

Review: Black Art Music call on the legendary Blake Baxter on the latest offering from automobile fancying label Moods & Grooves. "Afro Acid" is characterised by a swollen 303 gurgle, which thumps away below Baxter's spoken word vocal. Flip over for the dusty tribal rhythms of "Afro Jackin" and the undulating bass, bongos and twinkling piano lines of "Freedom" - our pick of the three, although it's the title track that will cause most dancefloor carnage.

Swing Low
Magic Jazz
Review: You never know exactly what you're going to get from Chicagoan veteran Joshua Iz (he of Iz & Diz fame), but you can safely assume it will have plenty of low end Chi-town bounce. That's certainly the case with Babadabadoo, a three-track excursion into dancefloor swing and boompty jazz. We've seen it all before, of course (Mike Dixon was doing this kind of thing for Classic a decade ago), but rarely has it been executed quite this well. The title track is the real killer here, an irrepressible Latin jazz/New Orleans wig-out that's so catchy; it'll be stuck in your head for weeks.

Review: Lady Blacktronika, who has been in prolific form for about 12 months now, pops up on the Italian imprint Kinda Soul, which has built a sturdy reputation by releasing raw and deep house from the likes of Scott Ferguson, Jus-Ed and Kassem Mosse. The opening track title made us blush, but all childish thoughts went out the window once we heard the slinky rhythm Blacktronicka built up. It's hard to decide which one of the B Side offerings impressed us most - the 45 rpm vocals layered on 33 rpm beats on "Be Free" or the ethereal synth patterns of "The Shadows" - so we'll just say we love them both equally.

Review: Detroit musical entrepreneur Terrence Parker curates the first in hopefully many editions of Music Works, premiering the best artists from his Parker Music Works imprint. TP takes the lead on the A Side with the delightfully soulful yet jacking house bump of "Let Your Love Show" which expertly cuts up bass stabs to create the atmosphere before dropping in the soft gospel vocal over some soft flamenco work. On the flip the typically Gallic jazz house flair of DJ Leandre's "Soul Juice" is complemented nicely by the rasping disco house strut of Matt Veloce's "Let's Get Some Love" which is filled with vintage Philly disco vibes.
