Robotron 4 - "Electro-?" (part 2) (4:03)
Review: While much turn-of-the-80s electro-funk was inherently futuristic in tone, the music gathered together on Soul Jazz's latest compilation, "Space Funk", is particularly intergalactic. The venerable London label has searched in particular for cuts from obscure independent labels that bear all the hallmarks of "Afro-futurism" - a musical and cultural movement that would later inspire the birth of techno in Detroit. The quality of the material remains dizzyingly high throughout, with our picks including the bleeping, slap-bass-propelled brilliance of Frank Cornilius' "Computer Games", Egyptian Lover/Jamie Jupitor's signature electro style on "Computer Power", the starry jazz-funk of Ernest Flippin II's "Supersonic Space Lady" and the guitar-laden P-funk strut of Below Zero Band's "Seven (We Are)".

Fluerella (7:32)
Fluerella (Tom VR mix) (7:52)
Fluerella (Ex Terrestrial mix) (7:37)
Fluerella (Urulu Liquid Earth mix) (6:27)
Review: Jeigo's previous missive on Air Miles, "An Ode To Midnight", was a lusciously dreamy collection of cuts shot through with loved-up retro-futurism. This time round there's only one original cut, "Fluerella", but it does come backed by three superb remixes. Jeigo's original mix is as wide-eyed, glorious and life affirming as witnessing the sun rise from a chilly mountain top, with bold electronic motifs and dreamy chords rising above a punchy, two-step influenced breakbeat groove. Tom VR emphasizes those two-step influences on his ultra-deep UK garage take, while Ex-Terrestrial re-imagines it as a throbbing slab of psychedelic acid breakbeat. To complete the package, Urulu steps up with a "Liquid Earth" mix that joins the dots between the Orb (circa 1990) and Psychick Warriors ov Gaia.

DBP - "Track 2" (4:33)
Dial M - "Selecta" (5:07)
Review: No pussy-footing around here, Jungle Cat are back with three more ravishing rootsical thumpers. Breaks sliced and diced to perfection by all parties, the currently unknown Dread Liner rids the nasty pipe from the dance by obliterating it with toxic amens, Yorkshire junglist DBP cooks up something so heavy it can't even be titled while Dial M tears us into little pieces then sellotapes us back together but replaces our souls for a very well known horn sample. Jungle Cat? Jungle beasts more like.

The Fulmars - "Fish On" (3:13)
Review: There's no denying that Blackest Ever Black has released some stellar music over the last decade, so it's rather fitting that the London imprint's final release is arguably one of its strongest for some time. To say goodbye, label boss Kiran Sande has put together a superb collection of poignant explorations of ambient, electronica and lo-fi pop that includes a swathe of label debuts. There are far too many highlights to mention, though our current favourites include the folksy acoustic guitars and dreamy shoegaze ambience of Lightning In A Twilight Hour's "The Munich Post", the spaced-out lo-fi dreaminess of Bridget Hayden's "Solace", the throbbing creepiness of Brainman's "Kilonova" and the gentle warmth and slow-burn bliss of Ian Martin's "Missing Realism". To misquote Douglas Adams: so long, and thanks for all the bliss.

Sensual Yarn (6:10)
Review: Harry Wills makes a big impression here with his futuristic house sounds across "SUB 009". "Switchback (feat. MG Tam)" opens in fantastic fashion with spangled synths that will twist any dance floor inside out. The high speed machine funk and cosmic warmth of "Sauna La Rood" is superb, followed by the slick and kinetic "Corsica Gambit" with its tightly knotted drums and crisp hits before the more playful "Sensual Yarn" closes out with jazzy keys, melodic synths and a broken beat pattern that switches things up nicely. Impressive stuff.

Review: Man of many aliases, Patrick Conway makes his debut on Sneaker Social Club with six disarming rave echoes that sound just as much 2091 as they do 1991. All the ingredients are familiar but are cooked so refreshingly in a piping hot dub oven, they sound like something completely fresh. Highlights include the grime-meets-hardcore-meets-double-dragon-scrap vibes of the title track, the ghostly breaks and pressurised pads of "Muzikon 90" and the spacious, almost UK funky style drum work and classic vocal sample of "Signal To Noise". Sneaker Social Club are always well ahead of the curve but this is a whole new venn diagram. Essential.

Review: Kirk Degiorgio has been a UK techno mainstay since forever. It's been 15 years since his last As One studio album, but "Communion" proves that it was well worth the wait. Covering the sort of star gazing, jazz tinged and high class techno that originated in Detroit, Degiorgio layers up lush chord symphonies with supple acid, icy harmonics and the sort of hi tech funk that keeps you on your toes. A masterclass in real emotion as well as propulsive groves, this is artful, expansive and cinematic techno of the highest order from one of the best in the game.

Now they're back with nine more endearing cuts of fascinating machine music. There are elements of dub, electro, boogie, cold wave and industrialism along the way, but each of these tracks sounds utterly fresh and new. Check the lo-fi swagger of "Track 5," the curious emptiness of "Track 7" and the alien funk of "Track 9" - all brilliantly weird and wonderful, warm and atmospheric and will have you desperate to know more about your new favourite artist.

Review: If there was ever an artist suited to a posthumous release it's Leonard Cohen. The gravel-voiced baritone never made light of situations in life, so "voice from grave" fits him down to the ground. Moreover, if there was ever an artist we needed more music from it must be Cohen, one of the most gifted songwriters of the 20th Century, poet laureate of the human condition and the good and evil men and women do. This collection of leftovers from a relentlessly incredibly career has been pieced together with a little help from friends and family still cursed to walk this troubled Earth. Son Adam Cohen led on the project, with former-collaborators such as Beck, The National's Bryce Dessner and Feist called in for services. Not that you'd tell. The finished product is timeless Cohen business - a gentile and humble powerhouse you can't help but feel profoundly moved by.

Review: Master of space in more ways than one, dub cadet Kenzo takes us to the stars and back on his long-awaited sophomore album "Taygeta Code". Now fully immersed in both jungle and 140 worlds, with a sound much less bounded with any one genre, it's much less of a follow up to his self-titled 2012 debut LP and much more of a completely new trip. Leaping from idea to idea, one moment we're swimming in the oceanic emotions with Lelijveld on "Broken Dreams", the next we're being bounced between the bleeps on the brutal sci-fi funk of "Deadbull". Elsewhere Navi joins the fray on the bulldozing, grunt-bass stomper "Narky", "Token Image" gets fizzy on the percussion with a great sense of layered momentum while "Starseed 47" brings us back home with the deep dub J:Kenzo first properly made his name with. Roomy, often gloomy, always heavy and full surprises. Follow the code.

Breath Control (6:34)
Xingu (5:34)
Review: Reedale Rise is next up on Ornate Music, plying his trade in deep-diving techno and electro on a label that revels in such sounds. Following the trend set out by his turns on Hizou and Frustrated Funk, the pads shimmer and gleam while the leads dart nimbly around the tightly locked machine rhythms on these three extremely tasteful workouts. "Barbary Coast" is a mystical delight of a track that twinkles up top and hits hard down in the rhythm section. "Breath Control" is a more forward-thrusting 4/4 groover, while "Xingu" explores crafty 2-step funk with plenty more of that starry-eyed sci-fi synth play in tow.

Review: Nekyia (previously of Neurosplit) last appeared in November 2018 on a standout VA for Ruffhouse & Gremlinz's UVB-76. Now they're back with a solo outing on RE:ST that offers some thrillingly dark and deep bass music. "White Sky, Nicotine Lips" is a superbly heavyweight rhythm built on lurching loops that pin you to the floor, "Killing Daylight" is even more empty and unsettling, like prowling a desolate urban landscape. Flipside "Vurrgh" gets busy with minimal drum programming and layers of static and industrial hum and hiss that bring a real sense of paranoia. "About The Beauty Of Gold Among Ruins" closes out with bleak and smoky warehouse techno that hypnotises you in no time. Vital stuff.

Geometry Of Curves (4:04)

Chambers (4:24)
Review: Some years ago, Shanti Celeste and Daisy Moon were housemates and resident DJs at the same monthly Bristol club. While the former has become something of a star in the last few years, it's taken the latter a while to make her production debut. "Geometry Of Curves" was undoubtedly worth the wait though. It brilliantly blends elements of off-kilter deep house, ambient house, the bass-weight of Bristol and a melodic attention to detail that belies Daisy Moon's debutant status. The title track sets the tone, with blissful melodies and cut-up vocal snippets rising above a crunchy, dubbed-out drum machine rhythm. From then on it's a dreamy drift into the stratosphere, with the head-nodding bliss of "Halcyon" and sludgy, off-kilter weirdness of "Chambers" standing out.

Review: Headed up by Benin-born Kaleta - a guitarist who has previously worked with Fela Kuti, King Sunny Ade and Lauryn Hill - Super Yamba Band is a New York collective whose decidedly psychedelic fusions of Afrobeat, Highlife and Afro-funk have been getting rave reviews. "Medaho" is their debut album and it more than lives up to the hype. With Kaleta's variously fuzzy, sun-kissed and flash-fried licks to the fore, the band trips its way through nine mostly dancefloor-friendly workouts that wrap heavy funk instrumentation, rousing horns and Afrobeat style organ riffs around polyrhythmic drums that recall the distinctive swing of Tony Allen. It's a stylistic blend that guarantees results, as the sheer volume of highlights triumphantly proves.

Review: Cor blimey what a time it is to be a fan of Tim Eliot. The man behind one of the most intense and exciting A/V shows in the genre, he's also released two albums this year on two of the most on-point young labels: the mighty Methlab and Serum's Souped Up who are responsible for this monster known as "Puer". Repping the German's more frantic, middle-finger-wagging mischievous sound, in many ways it's a homage to UK drum & bass with its jump up elements and big drawn out rolling basslines. Highlights include the steamrolling "Dead Out" (with T>I), the madcap bass fills, dreamy backdrop and stern sci-fi vocals of Coppa on "Remorse", the high voltage sizzles and brazen prang funk of "Vicious Circle" and the brilliantly titled "Silly Serious", a name many of us have called Current Value for years. Astonishing work; and this is only half of it.

Review: Served up in a nice Pressure Sounds house bag is this killer 10" from the one and only Lee "Scratch" Perry in cahoots with Diggory Kenrick. The rhythm is Junior Byles' "Long Way" and here it gets four reworks. Each of them hazy, deep, dubby and cavernous to sink right into. Perry's musings are subtle and drift in and out of ear shot, as does a curious flute and some rather festive tambourines. Things grow more tripped out across the four tracks, with the last cut the most psyched-out of the lot.

Intakes (Pye Corner Audio rework) (6:44)
Foddergang (Don't DJ rework) (8:58)
Eller Ghyll (President Bongo rework) (13:31)
Review: Craven Faults' various 12" singles on Lowfold Works have been uniformly inspired - analogue electronic epics that variously doff a cap to Suzanne Ciani, krautrock and the wilder ambient works of Cabaret Voltaire. For this EP, they take a back seat, instead allowing three other artists to put their spin on cuts from their catalogue. Pye Corner Audio offers up a gently building version of "Intakes" that wraps Craven Faults' pulsing electronics and opaque melodies around a hypnotic, pitched-down techno beat, while Don't DJ steals the show with a polyrhythmic, spaced-out take on "Foddergang" that impressively throbs and pulses for nine mesmerizing minutes. Arguably best of all though is President Bongo's 13-minute version of "Eller Ghyll", which re-imagines it as a soft focus shuffle through deep and hypnotic techno territory.

Review: Talk about narrative songwriting. Throughout this latest and arguably deepest effort from Deliluh we are introduced to myriad characters, each central to their individual chapter, transitions between artistically diverse songs made smooth through tape hisses, tense string refrains and similar apparatus. The overall themes centre on inner conflict and cross-generational disharmony. In order to bring those subjects to the fore we have atmospheric, cinematic instrumentals like "Falcon Scott Trail", commanding post punk ("Lickspittle: A Nut In The Paste", "Con Art Inc", "Incantessa") and soothing balladry ("Hangman's Keep"). Fans won't be too surprised to hear this - the outfit in question are renowned for their storytelling abilities and exploring multiple directions - while newcomers can rest assured they're being introduced to a troupe on top of their game. A worthy second act to "Oath of Intent", to say the least.

Review: Amongst Roy Ayers' fans, "Look At Me" has always been one of the more sought-after items in the legendary artist's catalogue. It was originally pressed up by Polydor Japan as a promo-only seven-inch single in 1977 and has been almost impossible to find ever since. Since then, they've delivered a modest but important body of work via Raster-Noton and produced the soundtrack to major Hollywood film "The Revenant". In the wake of last year's "Glass" released on Noto's Noton label, this live album captures the duo in full flight at Sydney Opera House. Noto's immaculately sculpted tones and textures carve out space around Sakamoto's trademark delicate, lingering notes, resulting in an absorbing listening experience as emotionally engaging as it is technically astounding.

Where "GOJI" is all sharp angles and bold sound design, the mighty Demdike Stare are on hand to deliver a remix that shirks convention (would you expect any less?) by barreling into a noise-caked tunnel of intensity that opens out into a fractured breakbeat meditation broken up with flamboyant handbrake turns to keep the dancers on their toes.

Review: Steve Hauschildt's profile has been on a steady rise since he moved from his long time home of Kranky to Ghostly International. It was a logical move to partner up with the Ann Arbor label as it encouraged the emotional side of his regal ambient pieces to shine through in line with the sensitive tones of other Ghostly alumni (Tycho, Telefon Tel Aviv, Shigeto, for example). On his second album for the label, Hauschildt sounds more moving than ever, his winsome compositions reaching towards bigger spaces especially on rhythmically charged tracks like "Subtractive Skies". This is no drastic departure from his established identity, but rather a considered evolution towards a new space in which his muse can reside.

It's no surprise considering Ben Sims is at the helm, and that equally explains the fact that the legendary Mark Broom has graced the label with his latest set of taut, main room club cuts. "Outta Sight" is a mean-tempered workout with a whiff of electro in the lead synth refrain, but it's not as outwardly malevolent as noisy juggernaut "L4LV". "Five/Four" has big room chords and massive splashing rides to get fists shaking - the consummate peak time belter. "TR1" takes things in a more dungeon-esque direction, using guttural rhythmic incisions to drag you into the depths of the night.
