Baiana (4:44)
Baiana (Wolf Mueller Drum Drop) (5:03)
Review: Barbatuques, a well known Brazilian group of body percussionists, originally recorded "Baiana" back in 2005 - which became a staple of their concerts. It is now issued on vinyl for the first time, marking the second volume of Brasingles: a new series on Selva Discos dedicated to releasing 'loud' 12" singles. On the first side, the original is a modern folk song from Bahia composed by Maria do Carmo Barbosa, and featuring a wild mouth harp sound with a stomping Barbatuques' arrangement that imprinted its trademark sound. German producer Jan Schulte (aka Wolf Mueller/Bufiman) heard the song and decided remix it to use in his DJ sets - adding more drums to brilliant effect.

Max Ransay - "Ti Kanno" (4:10)
Max Ransay - "Ti Kanno" (Sol Power All-Stars edit) (5:18)
Review: Sol Power Sound's latest must-have 12" serves of some obscure 1980s zouk and Beguine flavours from the French Caribbean territory of Martinique. Side A is dedicated to the wonderfully percussive but surprisingly sparse (think drums, fretless bass, synths and vocals) sunshine dance that is "Lizo" by Eugene Mona. The fine original version is accompanied by a fresh take from Kiko Navarro, who subtly combines all of Mona and company's original elements with a jaunty Caribbean house rhythm. Turn to the flipside for the tropical disco-era Beguine brilliance of Max Ransay's "Ti Kanno" - think dense tropical drums, disco horns, celebratory chorus vocals and meandering synthesizer lines - and a suitably beefed up contemporary tweak from the Sol Power All-Stars.

Cunny Jam Wayo (16:25)
Agboju Logun (11:42)
Gboro Mi Ro (7:43)
Review: Shina Williams' first album from 1979, African Dances, marked the moment where the Nigerian afrobeat artist would team up with 'His African Percussionists', to form one of the most sought-after sounds of the next decade. Taking inspiration from the Master Of Ceremonies, Fela Kuti, this album is just as loose and evocative as the legend's, and perhaps even a little more oriented towards the disco end of the spectrum. "Cunny Jam Wayo" is a classic afrobeat march, with its rolling drums popping off left, right and centre, while "Agboju Logun" offers a softer funk ride, and "Gboro Mi Ro" lifts the soul at the final moments with a truly memorable string of brass instruments and vocals. Cop this, not the L300+ original..!

Nhu Djon (4:15)
Volta Pa Terra (4:05)
Review: The Ostinato label is, without a doubt, coming through with the heaviest, most sought-after funana on the planet, and that is something quite special in itself if you think that this is some pretty niche, limited material. Their Cape Verde 45s series comes through with their most killer 7" yet, a two-tracker from 1984 by the Conjunto Jovens Africano, led by Ze Orlando - a prominent figure in the connection between Santiago (CV) and Lisbon, Portugal. Both tracks are pure fire, with "Nhu Djon" rocking that classic funana style, fast-paced and full of colour, while "Volta Pa Terra" offers the island's well-known passion for synthesisers and organic instruments, landing an instantly seductive groove that grows and grows. Wonderful stuff. Don't miss this!

Review: Efficient Space's latest release is certainly an intriguing one. It was sparked by the discovery of a CD copy of an obscure, mid-'90s album made by the late Victorian musician Peter Mumme and three Aboriginal songmen from the Yolngu people of the Arnhem Land in Australia's Northern territory. Uniquely, the album - here reissued under a new title with an additional unreleased piece - mixed the singers' traditional vocals with impeccable ambient soundscapes, gently pulsating electronic rhythms and the kind of fluid and wide-eyed synthesizer melodies more often found on '80s new age recordings. The results still sound remarkable and, thanks to the Yolngu singing style, surprisingly haunting.

Review: This "Special Edition" of Lord Echo's recent third full-length, Harmonies, seems to be aimed at DJs. Whereas the original pressing contained the same tracks on one piece of wax, this version stretches the same tracks over two super-loud, heavyweight records. Formatting aside, the album itself is something of a head-in-the-clouds, feet-on-the-floor treat. It features the Kiwi producer working with a range of collaborators - Tony Laing of Fat Freddy's Drop and regular studio buddy Mara TK included - to serve up intoxicating cuts that brilliantly fuses reggae, dub and rocksteady rhythms with elements borrowed from disco, Afro-soul, Afro-funk, spiritual jazz and, more surprisingly, techno. It's a hugely vibrant and entertaining set, offering a good balance between dancefloor vibrations and more laidback concoctions.

Satari - "Smile" (5:41)
Nicky Love - "Nobody To Love" (feat Satari) (4:59)
Review: It was way back in 1986 when South African singer Satari released her one and only single, a double A-side affair featuring "Malebu" and "Smile". It's the latter that rightly gets the reissue treatment here. Breezy, melodious, synthesizer-heavy and undeniably positive, the track offers a particularly Balearic take on boogie-infused, mid 1980s synth-pop. This time round, the track comes backed with another '86 Sidwell Duda production, Nicky Love featuring Satari's "Nobody To Love". It's every bit as delicious as the A-side, even if it does stick a little more closely to the early '80s New York disco-boogie blueprint. In other words, these are two fine, forgotten gems that are deservedly being given a new lease of life.

Unathi (3:36)
Zaharila (3:43)
Review: Leon Michel's El Michels Affair has always grabbed our attention, since the very early days of the Juno website, back in the early 00s. The New York outfit, an instrumental collective that seems to change every decade, have been experimenting with jazz and all sorts of ethereal styles from across the globe. This new single, out through the trusted Big Crown label, is perhaps one of their most memorable outings of the last 5 years. The title track, "Unathi", is a mystical voyage across time and space, with psyched-out vocals riding high above a solid trip-hop groove and a marvelous array of trippy atmospherics. On the flip, "Zaharila" is a slower, moodier piece that speaks to the heart, spewing horns and tough beats from every angle, making it instantly recognizable and, yes, as seductive as most of El Michels Affair's music. Excellent.

Review: Les Maxel's "Le Retour De Toto" first came out in 1976, via the Disques Debs imprint, and has gained an impressive notoriety on the second hand market. So much so that it has become a staple of the beguine style, a calypso-leaning sub-genre from the French Caribbean, and pretty much an anthem to anyone into that particular strain of dance. Atangana have reissued with dev diligence, with Deni Shain and Papastomp remixing its groove to form a more contemporary, more structured arrangement that taps into the 4/4 mould. Killah, even simply for the original cut!

Review: Juan Laya and Jorge Montiel pay homage to the heartland with this beguiling album. A deep trip up and down the amazon, hopping off as and when they see fit, the album sees them paying homage to Latin standards such as "Fruta Fresca" and "Manduco". Rebuilding them electronically with, no doubt, a fair few classic synths in the mix. From disco to blues with just a touch of Latin folk magic, it's yet another unique and vital trip from the Los Charly's Orchestra lads.

Review: Cuba's Orland Cachaito Lopez, who sadly passed away back in '09, had only released his first LP under his name in 2001. World Circuit was the imprint to bring the man to the foray, and here they are once again with this marvelously packaged reissue. Solid and guaranteed to please. Needless to say, this album is full of Havana's magic vibe, rocking some pretty full-proof rhythms with a swing and a charm that can only be found on the Caribbean island. But, it's not simply Lopez's Cuban heritage which makes it stand out; rather, there is just the right balance of motion between dance and form, making this album a sure stand-out to anyone remotely interested in anything 'jazz'. Lovely stuff.

Review: Sacred Summits were the first to reissue Luis Perez's timeless Mexican hymns, back in 2014, but the diligent Mr Bongo has decided to buy the rights to press some more copies up. To us, that's only good news because we absolutely love this album. First released in 1981, it has been an almost impossible record to get a hold of on vinyl, but it absolutely SHOULD be readily available to anyone - through vast landscapes of subtle electronic manipulations and organic instrument improvisation, we are immersed in an endless world of mysticism, where each new listen will unearth something new and wonderful. What a sublime LP. Warmly recommended.

Review: Not that it's any surprise to us, but London's Far Out imprint is really smashing it at the moment, putting out some Brazilian fire left, right and centre. This week, along with an excellent reissue from Baiano & Os Novos Caetanos, we have 1975's Azambuja & Cia, another unforgettable gem from the Golden Era of South American funkin'! Although there are plenty of moments worth a dance on here, this album is a much gentler, more soulful number which often spans into the livelier end of the jazz spectrum. In fact, this is the vibe right here, with fat basslines coming meandering amid mild-mannered beats and the group's inimitable vocal swagger. It's another Brazilian gem, and one worth copping as a reissue. Magnificent stuff.

Afro Beat (3:24)

Review: The library music crate-diggers behind Italy's Four Flies label aren't quite sure when regular collaborators Braen (an alias of composer and multi-instrumentalist Alessandro Alessandroni) and Raskovich (Guillano Sorgini) recorded these two previously unreleased tracks, but it's thought to have been around the time of the 1971 sessions for a psychedelic rock 7" by The Pawnshop. A-side "Afro Beat" is something of a saucer-eyed, Modernist delight, with the duo mixing meandering organ lines and breezy Afro-funk grooves with heavy bass. "Afro Flower", on the other hand, sounds like something that would have emerged from the studio of the Graham Bond Organization during the swinging '60s, which is no bad thing in our book.

Review: Together under the starry skies of the 70s, Arnaud Rodrigues and Chico Anysio made some of the most incredible music of that decade, under the name of Baiano & Os Novos Caetanos. Their legendary debut LP from 1974, under their own name, has become a Brazilian funk addict's must-have, not to mention a Holy Grail for contemporary sampling. Until now, it's been difficult to get a hold of it on viny format, so we're super psyched that the irresistibly reliable Far Out label has decided to reissue it. With 11 tracks to marvel at, there is a slice of funk for all walks of life and, of course, there is so much grooving to done! Quite simply, this is feel-good music for feel-good people, and this duo's vibes are just about the best thing we could ask on this June morning. Cop it before it's too late - we wouldn't want you to suffer at the hands of the online sharks, now!
