Deep House
Crying Wolf (feat Alex Mills)
Restless Souls (feat Cari Golden)
Love (feat Sheff)
Review: London house duo No Artificial Colours arrive on Kerri Chandler's Madtech label with the Crying Wolf EP, three tracks of bass heavy deepness that fits in nicely with the aesthetic the label has been neatly developing over its steady stream of releases. Unlike most of their contemporaries who seem content to pillage their vocals from an ever decreasing number of sources, NAC are all about bespoke vocal contributions; the title track pairs Alex Mills' '90s style with the duo's darkly swung production and booming toms, while "Restless Souls" sees Cari Golden's vocals go together with some classically filtered bassline action. However, it's perhaps Sheff's contribution on "Love" that is the standout, offering the perfect fusion of early 90s house vocals and contemporary house sounds.

In Brackets
5AM
Voices
Rare Bloom
Review: Ever spreading their wings and snapping up labels left right and centre, Dark Sky move on from their recent turn for Tectonic to deliver an EP for Mister Saturday Night that applies their complex and engaging approach to housier domains. First track "In Brackets" is a refined beast, tapping into the spiritual vein of artists like DJ Qu but employing a richer tapestry of sounds to intone the mystery. "5AM" by comparison is a much snappier proposition, sporting a vintage garage beat and cheeky trills of synth, while "Voices" burrows into a plethora of vocal micro-samples with purpose and a lot of layering. "Rare Bloom" rounds the EP off in stunning fashion with a measured roller that keeps the beat ticking steadily so that accomplished swells of synth can draw you in on a bold and thrilling journey of a track.

Bells (System mix)
Bells (Dream Sequence)
Review: It's been three years since Peverelist released anything on his own Punch Drunk label; of late his productions have come out primarily on the Livity Sound imprint he runs with Kowton and Asusu, or on Hessle Audio. Here he returns to Punch Drunk in triumphant form, using the truncated Pev to drop two versions with fellow Bristolian Jacob Martin, best known for his solo productions as Hodge, and his work as one half of Idle Hands house duo Outboxx. Entitled Bells, the 12? sees two takes on the same track; given both Martin's house credentials and Ford's dubstep past and recent forays into slower rhythmic terrain it's no surprise that both tracks are steady, mid-tempo house imbued with Bristol's bass-weight heritage. "Bells (System Mix)" employs syncopated kicks and dub chords over its tunnelling bass, while "Bells (Dream Sequence)" is a more linear Chicago-inspired house cut with distant chimes and abstract synth textures, sounding not unlike some of the dreamier fare released on MOS Recordings.

Crimson (beat Ritual mix)
Review: Pearson Sound's last EP, Clutch, saw the producer delve into considerably more experimental territory than previous releases with three stripped back, grime-influenced productions that travelled into the realms of abstraction. REM, released on the producer's own imprint, sees Pearson Sound continue to develop this approach with four similarly essential tracks from the Hessle Audio man; the title track provides an atmospheric combination of cubist rhythm structures and raw tones, while "Gridlock" builds layers of D&B-like percussion over regular sub bass intervals. "Figment" meanwhile is almost Actress-like in its understated beauty; only "Crimson (Beat Mix)" is most recognisably Kennedy's work, thanks to its clattering filtered snares which swim in a soup of tripped out reverb and melancholy chords.

It Ain't Right
Jimmy Kendricks
Review: The fruitful partnership of bass music mavens Mak and Pasteman graduates to a white label release all of it's own with two cheeky edits suited to the most hybridized of dancefloors. "It Ain't Right" taps into a very familiar vocal turn, working the R&B of the original into a groove shaped like breakbeat but clothed in garage. On the flip "Jimmy Kendricks" is a stripped down house cut with subtle licks of vocal in a sparse environment, the space filled out by a booming thud of 808 flavour bass. Those seeking out a handy pair of custom-built battle weapons for diverse dances should look no further.

Addict (feat Applebim - Komon remix)
23 Summers Out To Tommy's Stashwell Chatz
Iron Oxide
Review: Bristol's champion of full-bodied and immaculately produced dubstep business brings more of his plush melodics to bear on the Halocyan imprint after sterling turns for the likes of Apple Pips. "Addict" is a prime example of his style, fusing crisp, sugarsnap garage drums with thick swathes of synths that dart and parry around each other with grace and skill. Komon steps up on the remix tip with a simple fashioning of the track into a chunky house groove that retains the essence of the original. "23 Summers" takes a more laidback approach to the steppiness, slinging R&B samples around in a delirous and boogie-inflected haze, while "Iron Oxide" plunges into a more rolling breakbeat flavour shot through with a healthy dose of melancholia. Finally, October gets jacking on a remix of "23 Summers" that piles on metallic percussion and bubbling acid in a linear and psyched out fashion that's as much industrial as it is techno.

1990
OK O
Review: Dutch veteran Aardvarck returns to the Rush Hour Distro affiliated No Label series with more rave-inspired breakbeat techno in the shape of 1990. With a production history going back as far as 1993, and a DJ career that began several years before that, Mike Kivits is better placed than many to take this approach and this two track 12" is every bit on par with the excellent Nubian 12", his debut for No Label last year. The title track combines soaring strings and rolling drums together in a nostalgic package, while "Ok.O" presents the more experimental side to the Aardvarck sound, delivering something akin to an unholy union between junglist rhythms and a dying modular synth. Absolutely essential!

Keyhole
HydroPump
Review: Bristol's DJ Die has gone one better than signing Addison Groove to his Gutterfunk imprint, he's only gone and collaborated with him on both tracks here as well! The footwork-influenced side project of Headhunter, Addison Groove assumes charge of "Keyhole" - a stripped back excursion into sultry voodoo beats. Meanwhile on "Hydropump", DJ Die takes the lead steering this ship into breaky hip-house waters in the process.

Mission Creep
Razz
Review: Whilst producers starting their own labels are an everyday occurrence at the moment, you still have to pay that extra bit of attention when someone of Pangaea's calibre makes such a move. The name Hadal is apparently inspired by the Hadal zone at the bottom of the ocean which is in keeping with the prehistoric supercontinent from which Kev McAuley takes his own production name. The Hessle Audio decision maker himself helms the first release Viaduct which brandishes a triplet of productions that further refine the singular combination of jungle and techno that was displayed with superb results on last year's Release double pack. "Mission Creep" in particular stands out thanks to a treated vocal sample that has echoes of Pangaea's Hemlock classic "Hex".

Dither
Outer Control
Review: Schooled in the art of DJing thanks to their respective residencies at Leeds nights Wax:On and Bigger Than Barry, West Yo pair Mak & Pasteman stepped up to the production game with releases across Shifting Peaks, Senseless Records & Sounds of Sumo that helped accelerate their rise through the Bass Music ranks. Appearing on Redlight's Lobster Boy label represents the pair's biggest 12" release to date and Mak & Pasteman sound like they belong on the basis of the two tracks. "Dither" is all about the samurai sharp drum edits and that deep, heaving bass stab whilst "Outer Control" is on a similar alien electro tip to some of Addison Groove's 50 Weapons material. Two tracks deep and cut loud on 180g vinyl, this is how you want a 12" release!

Review: !K7/Stereo Deluxe stalwarts Boozoo Bajou are back, this time breaking ties with the past to release a new EP on Apollo. Here the German duo (Florian Seyberth and Peter Heider) unveil a more widescreen ambient sound that still stays in touch with their more jazzy soulful roots. The beatless "Jan Mayen", an evocative collage of occasional guitar strums, distant chimes and muted piano, best represents the EP's ambient side, while "Stronsay" covers the duo's more upbeat, percussive qualities.

Kowton vs Julio Bashmore - "Mirror Song"
Kowton - "And What?"
Kowton vs Julio Bashmore - "Mirror Song" (techno remix)
Review: n what might have seemed like an unlikely pairing at first, Kowton and Julio Bashmore join forces for a Bristolian crossover that yields the perfect kind of hybrid madness for these times. "Mirror Song" comes on with the gritty percussive dread that embodies Kowton's more recent output, while the more insistent house groove and catchy sample hooks show the poppier sensibilities Bashmore has brought to the table. "And What?" is less easy going, fraying and splintering into that broken snare snarl that could only come from Kowton, dodging any kind of melody in favour of industrial textures and morose bass stabs. For those needing a more linear kind of beat to work with, the "techno remix" of "Mirror Song" should fit the bill very nicely indeed.

Nancy's Library (feat 5150 Sound)
Review: Unique NY trio Archie Pelago present their own label, and with it their most comprehensive sonic CV to date. Ranging from near-Balearic depth and cosmicity ("Avocado Roller") to the more fractured, clipped, warped jazz steps of the title track, their stark delivery sits somewhere between Bonobo, Hidden Orchestra and Phaeleh. From the flutey noodles of "Nancy's Library" to the rich subby thumbs of "In The Room", this sets AP's stall out with clarity and precision. Expect plenty more soon...

California Analog Dream (Bullion remix)
California Analog Dream (Factory Floor remix)
Review: Everyone's favourite band named after a park in Amsterdam return with another gem from their acclaimed album Seabed. Yearning, textured and just a touch trippy, their Roxy-meets-Jono McLeery sound resonates with a deep dreaminess. Remix-wise Bullion shows his most sensitive side with distant jazzy breakbeats, faraway guitar plucks and great subversion on the vocal harmonies. Factory Floor, meanwhile, represent things in more angular fashion with a crisp acid edge and beautiful build dynamics. A very versatile package.

Uh
OK
Review: In one of his rare forays outside of his own Hyperdub stable, Kode9 hops over to kindred spirits Rinse for this no-nonsense two tracker of taut rhythmic workouts to coincide with his recent mix. "Uh" is the more straight-up of the two bangers on this release, bouncing along on a 4/4 structure with a broken beat kink that drops down into a half time swagger in all the right places, while the bass stays simple and deadly. "OK" is a more slippery devil, all splattered footwork snares and buzzing Casio key tones designed for those with more limbs than they know what to do with on the dancefloor.

Title Sequence
Review: Shadowy Mancunian duo Akkord resurface with the Navigate EP which represents the latest compelling release from the Houndstooth label. With identities still very much under wraps, Akkord follow Call Super, House Of Black Lanterns and _Unsubscribe_ in releasing through the Fabric-founded Houndstooth label; the four track EP sees the duo expand on the hybrid sound first showcased on a pair of self-released 12"s that have attained something akin to cult status. A working relationship between Houndstooth and Akkord has been hinted at since news of the label first emerged, and makes perfect sense given that label A&R Rob Booth previously included the duo on his exhaustive 61 track Electronic Explorations digital compilation and affiliated 12" sampler released last year. A telling capacity for dynamic sound design is further displayed on the Navigate EP, with the first three tracks occupying a similar sonic mind space to Objekt, though "Title Sequence" trades this for some poignant respite.

Review: Southampton's Butterz correspondent Royal-T continues to make good on his unofficial "grime starlet" title with yet more material for the label branch of Rinse FM. I Know You Want Me sees a nice subtle production progression from last year's debut self titled album and the title track is be best described as all the finest elements of dance music over a bumping 4x4 beat - think face slapping snares, a classic Reese bassline and chopped up vocals. Face down, and Royal-T indulges in some shoulder leaning trap antics on "Koopa Shell" (nice Mario Kart reference) whilst the legend DOK vocalises the playful 16bit schizogrime winner "Saints"

2-4-6 (Desto remix)
Review: Well Rounded Records revealed their intentions to cease operating as a standard record label at the end of the year for wholly admirable reasons, and they'll truly be missed for anyone with a real interest in current strains of bass music. Since their 2009 inception, Well Rounded has steered clear of the tepid, zeitgeist chasing end of the bass music spectrum and remained true to the rugged and rude hardcore continuum. This two track 12" from Nottingham veteran Geiom is a case in point. "2 4 6" is a bastard melding of UK Funky rhythmics and nascent Detroit electro augmented by some rude vocal work from Terrible Shock. It's blessed by a remix from the Finnish school of excellence too with a spinal tapped Scandinavian carnival refix from the man like Desto.

White Noise (HudMo remix)
Review: With the debut Disclosure album on the horizon the hype juggernaut cranks up a notch with this remix from Hudson Mohawke. Clearly implementing the Lana Del Rey formula, Hud Mo's take on "White Noise" comes in the aftermath of a slew of similarly high profile remixes of the brotherly duo (Joe Goddard, Dixon and Jamie Jones amongst them) Given his widely professed love for female fronted RnB, Kanye's mate Hudmo is a perfect producer to approach "White Noise", the Lawrence brother's track with Aluna George's Aluna Francis and the results are revelatory. It's all about the drums here which snap and flutter in all the right places as Disclosure's original melodies percolate and Francis' vocal gets mangled.

Used To Give A FK
Rick Ross
5's Up
Review: Further developing his new venture Unknown Shapes, Kwesi Darko is back at Black Acre and in a forthright mood that swaps downtempo dread for rave hysteria of the most fearsome kind. Lead track "Used To Give A FK" slugs heavy on a half time beat which gets offset by some urgent arpeggiating and the titular vocal sample, steadily rising in a purple-informed swell of melody without ever getting too saccharine. "Rick Ross" meanwhile is pure venom, spitting out a terrifying string hook while the two-note bass drum booms out a death march of powerful proportions. "5's Up" is no softer with its monolithic brass swells signalling a looming end of days scenario through the power of the low end.
