History Of Dates
Lockdown Party
Lockdown Party (Sprinkles Crossfaderama)
Review: Canadian producer The Mole, or Colin de la Plante to friends, has been in fine production fettle so far this year, gracing labels as varied as Red Motorbike, Slices Of Life and his own Maybe Tomorrow operation with his distinct brand of tongue in cheek mutant house. History Of Dates marks the long overdue Perlon debut for The Mole and it's celebrated in style as Zip's venerated label call in DJ Sprinkles on remix duties! The title track and "Lockdown Party" line up on the A Side with the latter track a particularly cheeky production, as playground chants sit deep beneath an insouciant house groove. It's this track that Sprinkles remixes, implementing some subtle production additions such as handclaps and playful filtration on the vocal samples which lend the track a different energy as Thaemlitz deftly builds up a killer contemporary disco groove.

Modulo RZ
The Octave Lord Of Ring Mode
Super Accompaniment
Review: The Modular RZ EP is an excellent rough edged material from Naples pair Rio Padice and Massimo De Lena, founders of the Early Sound Recordings label and well acclimatised to working together as part of The Early Sounds Collective with fellow Neapolitan Leskin. The three tracks here are a perfect fit for Clone's irregular Royal Oak series, nudging themselves nicely in the fuzzy grey zone between house and techno and focusing on a tooly approach that keeps the beats straight whilst they work through a raft of bleep laden, analogue movements. The title track has immediate qualities that will appeal to many, but the rugged charms of "The Octave Lord Of Ring Mode" really stand out for us, with dirt encrusted bassline and semi malfunctioning fx lending the production just the right dash of wrongness.

Deep House
Rombusto
Sexalitat
Review: What began as a record shop in Munich founded by Marvin & Valentino now becomes a record label as the duo inaugurate Public Possession with a 12" under the Tambien project they share with compatriot Bartellow. As you'd expect from the title, the Robusto / Sexalitat EP occupies the robust end of the techno spectrum, offering up two cuts steeped in analogue fuzz but still powered by a desire to make people move. With support from the likes of Joakim, Tim Sweeney and LIES boss Ron Morelli, the wonderfully hollow sounding "Robusto" rips and bounces in all the right spots whilst "Sexalitat" nearly boils over with intensity and shimmering white noise. Sehr gut!

Dennis (original 12" mix)
Dennis (Ripperton Eight Wheels dub)
Dennis (Baikal remix)
Review: Frankfurt's Rajko Muller has been responsible for some timeless dancefloor moments as Isolee since his emergence on the iconic Playhouse in 1996, chief among them the iconic "Beau Mot Plage". Having resurfaced earlier this year with that 3 track drop for Koze's Pampa label, Isolee delivers another contemporary contender for his canon of personal classics with this release for Ripperton's Tamed Musiq. "Dennis" is filled with all the warmth and production intricacies one comes to expect from an Isolee production and is complemented by tweaks from Ripperton himself and Berlin artist Baikal.. The former's self styled 'Eight Wheels dub' adds a lot more percussive groove to the mix whilst Baikal opts for a hypnotic rework that's all about the labyrinthine bassline.

California Analog Dream (Robag Moppa Habax NB)
California Analog Dream (Robag Habay Latoff NB)
Review: Despite some ill advised comments from Vondelpark stating their apparent lack of interest in current dance music trends, it's clear that the R&S signed troupe focus on a sound that makes them eminently remixable. Robag Wruhme is the latest producer to remould Vondelpark on this pair of remixes for DJ Koze's Pampa label, drawing on the sounds of "California Analog Dream" for inspiration. Kudos to Koze as the Kompakt mainstay is on sublime form here; the lead 'Moppa Habax NB' version retains certain elements of Vondelpark's original but weaves a loving ultra-violet sheen around them whilst laying down the kind of sumptuous house beat that makes you ponder the validity of Vondelpark's aforementioned comments. The accompanying 'Habay Latoff NB' version pulls the track deeper into DJ tool territory and feels like the sort of track Michael Mayer would drop deep into a set.

Roman Flugel - "More Is Not Enough (Heaven Or Hell?)"
Lauer - "Hector"
San Laurentino - "Final Landing"
Tuff City Kids - "People Is A Crackhead" (Tuff Hamlet riddim)
Review: Established as a record label some four years ago, Live At Robert Johnson have really come to the fore as representing the best of contemporary European deep house alongside the likes of Dial and Running Back. Here, the Frankfurt institution returns to their recent triumphant Lifesaver compilation with this addendum 12" release featuring the productions from Roman Flugel, Lauer, San Laurentino and Tuff City Kids. Flugel opens proceedings with the rough and moody "More Is Not Enough" which brandishes a beat that can't help but get in your face. This is complemented by the calmer, sumptuous New Beat stylings of Lauer's "Hector" and the richly colourful "Final Landing" from San Laurentino. "People Is A Crackhead (Tuff Hamlet Riddim)" is not only the best track title in a hot minute but yet another original dancefloor slayer from Gerd Janson and Lauer's Tuff City Kids, opting for the Germanic digi dub meets tuff house route.

Self Portrait
Giant Robot
The Guilty Bridge
Tales From The West Side
Self Portrait (Actress remix)
Review: Putting Terrence Dixon and Actress together is always going to elicit a healthy dose of curiosity for anyone that considers themselves a fan of techno music so kudos to Canadian Monique Musique for issuing this release. The Giant Robot sees Dixon conducting matters under his Population One mantle, offering up four tracks spread across one 12", whilst Werkdiscs boss Actress provides a remix which resides on an accompanying yellow marble 10". If you've checked Dixon's work as Population One you know what to expect here; raw and at times minimalist reductions on the Detroit template that still retain a certain chaotic melodicness. The title track is perhaps the best example of this, whilst "The Guilty Bridge" is simply astounding. Actress is in quite satanic form, mangling "Self Portait" in a manner that recalls Jamal Moss at his most playfully deranged - try dropping this one in the dance hall son!

Autiste Redding
Subhouse
Review: Having previously collaborated with the likes of Masomenos, it's no surprise to find that French producer Vadim Svoboda is enamoured with the quirkier end of minimal music, and so he fits right in on Seuil's Eklo imprint. "15" keeps the vibe dry and sparse, with slender percussion and only the barest of melodic elements in a decidedly abstract vein, while "Autiste Redding" lets a processed vocal hiccup sneak in to the mix while the rest of the framework remains concise and methodical. "Subhouse" is where things get cheekier, getting a more discernable groove on and firing off a more playful spread of samples, without overdoing it of course.

Analog XTC
Analog XTC (Sascha Dive Deep Echo Vibration dub)
Review: Norm Talley of late has traded his housey sound for a dub techno sonic, and joins fellow Detroit house-head Rick Wade in contributing to the German Minimood Extra imprint (sub-label to Minimood). His Analog XTC EP is reminiscent of something Fachwerk might produce, with steely-tinged dub chords, junky percussion clatters and a clipped vocal sculpted in a Dehnert style. Sascha Dive supplies a Deep Echo Vibration dub, which rolls in grungy perpetual motion, fathoming deeper by the bar into spacious and sunken sub-sonics.

Renata (Daphni remix)
Renata (Steve Moore remix)
Review: Leading up to James Holden's long awaited second album, Border Community offer the Holden obsessive with a remix 10" featuring new scores of "Renata" by Daphni and Steve Moore. Daphni's remix is executed in typically unpredictable fashion by the Caribou frontman Dan Snaith, as the melancholic and euphoric fervour of Holden's consuming original is calmed by a breathy vocal choral and scissor-cut salvos lifted from an early UK Garage style. Steve Moore's alternate version offers a tom drum melodic and dreamy ambient wash of hyper-coloured synths that whiz and whirl to the point of ecstasy just before climax. A essential for Holden completists.

Reasons To Be Dismal? (Dixon Update)
Reasons To Be Dismal? (Extendedsight version)
Reasons To Be Dismal? (Steve Bug edit)
Reasons To Be Dismal? (Motorcitysoul remix)
Review: Poker Flat revisit Reasons To Be Dismal?, the Nu Groove classic from Foremost Poets, with some high profile remixers in tow. Released back in 1989, the track was a superbly lusty example of how disco had eventually mutated into something wholly darker and was dominated by that iconic socio-conscious spoken-word delivery of Johnny Dangerous. Dixon leads the way with a self styled Update on the track that fits in alongside his widely recognised canon of pared down, driving house music without losing any of the original's charms. The Extended Sight version from the original has been licensed too and offers some raw, detuned contrast to the polished efforts from Motorcitysoul and Steve Bug that occupy the flip.

Review: It's been seven years since Holden's debut album The Idiots Are Winning was released on his own Border Community imprint, and in that time new material has been scarce to say the least. Thankfully, The Inheritors was well worth the wait; produced with a combination of Holden's extensive analogue modular system and his own self-coded software, the album takes in influences as wide as The KLF, Elgar, ceilidh music, pentatonic folk scales and ancient pagan rituals, with each track recorded in one take with no overdubs. Border Community cohort Luke Abbott's Holkham Drones album would be the closest comparison, but even that superb record doesn't come close to the sprawling marvel that is The Inheritors, with highlights like the jazz sax of "The Caterpillar's Intervention" and twisting analogue techno of "Gone Feral" coming thick and fast.

Pain
Dead
Review: The anonymous offshoot from Creme Organization continues unabated with this pair of downbeat electro jams that continue the fine vintage of the parent label in dealing with sci-fi flavoured machine funk, albeit in a more restrained fashion here. "Pain" is a gently simmering monster, working around an urgent but delicately mixed drum machine arrangement and slow-release synth strings that help hold down the intense and yet soporific atmosphere. "Dead" meanwhile growls in comparison with its more vociferous bass, but it's still a languid paean to dancefloor romanticism rather than a gutsy floor shaker, and all the more effective for it.

Lost City
Review: ** TALE OF US REPRESS ** Richie Hawtin's label has long been associated with the minimal sound, but this release frees itself from that sound. The title track is stripped back, but it serves up a new take on classic electro thanks to its shuffling 808s and woozy, reflective synths. Tale of Us returns to a more conventional approach on "Discochord" but they still avoid hiccupping mnml sounds and the squelchy acid line is accompanied by atmospheric synths. Finally, "Lost City" is more grimy and nocturnal, but again the menacing 808s and reflective synths make it sound a million miles away from the label's trademark sound.

Review: Though his career has taken many turns over the last decade, DJ Koze has remained that most illusive of creatures: a minimal-minded producer with an ear for a melody. This fourth full-length, packed to the rafters with big-name collaborations (Apparat, Caribou, Ada and Matthew Dear all feature), continues his move towards the home-listening sphere. So, while many of the heady rhythms and shuffling grooves hark back to his stripped-back past, Amygdala impresses with its woozy songs, genre-straddling fusions (see the modern soul meets deep house of "Homesick" or the steppy, tropical vibes of "Marilyn Whirlwind") and homely atmosphere.

Voltage (original)
Voltage (Volkan Constant mix)
Voltage (Villalobos AC/DC remix)
Review: Formerly working under the V For Volkan moniker, German producer Volkan Akin makes great strides with this first release under his given name for the resurgent Ultrastretch. Founded in 2011 by Berlin fixture Sammy Dee, Ultrastretch came correct with it's first three releases from Seuil, Al Schwartz and Matthew Burton before an extended break which ends with this 12". Lead track "Voltage" sees Akin dive gleefully into abstract minimalist territory, with an irregular beat pattern haunted by lost remnants of ghostly machine funk, something which is toned down considerably on the producer's subsequent "Constant Remix" with hypnotics results. Given the left of centre nature of the source, Ricky Villalobos is perfectly placed to further tease out some textural and rhythmic kinks on a suitably expansive "AC/DC Remix".

Sleeping Rough

Verbal Abuse
Review: The Nothing Special maintain their intermittent attitude to release schedules with the third 12" in as many years, though Sleeping Rough is made that bit extra special (no pun intended) as it's the first time label boss Craig Richards has helmed a plate! The title track's been a much requested production since the revered Fabric resident included it on his Boiler Room set earlier this year; that "drippy drippy" vocal hook which rides the deep, abstract house groove will lodge itself comfortably in your cerebral cortex as soon as you hear it. Alongside it, both "Surgical Changes" and "Verbal Abuse" showcase Richards' production range, adopting a slanted 160bpm pace whilst the stripped down programming ensures there's plenty of space for him to experiment with sound and texture.

More & More & More
Review: Turning tricks with ever more prolificacy, Roman Flugel is back in business once again with some decidedly rough stylings for Clone's Jack For Daze series. "Even More" is a taut and responsive floor worker shot through with that quintessential Flugel quirk, in this case defined by a funky guitar lick over the booming machine drums. "More & More & More" gets even wilder, bringing in a loony lead synth that calls to mind the primal production style of UK Funky over a rugged box-jam jack. With some classic Dance Mania flavoured vocal samples flown in for good measure, a crowd-busting belter is born.
