Track 1 (6:42)
Track 2 (7:11)
Track 3 (6:43)
Review: The hand-stamped train just keeps on trucking with Italojohnson, who offers up another three righteous slabs of hardware goodness for the fist-shakers out there. "Track 1" spreads itself over the A side with a tight and punchy rhythm section that gets off set by a gloriously bubbling set of sound effects, managing to be both utterly useful and pleasantly unhinged in the same bar. On the flip side "Track 2" moves with a more neatly trimmed old-skool jack, sleek and refined without sounding over-polished. "Track 3" slows things down for a dirty ride through slimy basslines and heavy cowbell abuse.

Ahh!
Be-Bop
Spring (KZR main)
Review: Big release here for the Kolour Limited series who've scooped up three feel good house cuts from NDATL Music boss Kai Alice. Based around a self explanatory vocal motif "Ahh!" is the sort of euphoric house track you can drop mid set and stand back and watch as a sea of arms are raised in response. The deft track titling continues apace on "Be-Bop" where skat vocals are the perfect accompaniment to the deep chord progressions and metallic percussion, whilst the B Side plays host to just the one track in "Spring (KZR main)" where Alce gets funkier than a mosquito's tweeter thanks to some psychedelic guitar licks, chiming pads and refined 909 sequencing.

Laid Away
DDT
Laid Away (Perseus Traxx mix)
Laid Away (Ksoul & MuteOscillator mix)
Review: Having plied his trade on labels across the world, Liverpudlian analogue explorer John Heckle sticks closer to home with this EP, popping up on local label Scenery. Heckle's approach to house - raw, uncompromising, exciting and more than a little eccentric - is perfectly suited to Asok's imprint. "Laid Away" surges from the speakers like some long lost Detroit classic, whilst retaining Heckle's unique sound, while "DDT" is a fearsome chunk of robust acid blessed with a seriously heavy bassline. It compliments the track's intense drum machine anarchy perfectly. Remix wise, there's a deeper, woozier take on the title track by Perseus Traxx, while Ksoul and Muteoscillator turn the same cut into an exotic, Afro-tinged analogue deep house gem.

Review: Riding high on the buzz he has generated in the last twelve months, Max Graef delivers this album to Tartelet as a man very much in demand. His style, fuelled on the foundations of sampling funk and soul to a brilliantly modern end, has more space to breathe on this LP, but still the fundamentals remain. "Itzehoe" struts on a lazy jazzed-out sizzle of drums and beautiful Rhodes notes while "Tamboule Fudgefunk" punches its way through woozy synth work and a righteous beat and "Drums Of Death" struts on a perfect disco groove replete with live instrumentation, but there's a wealth of other tempos and styles all shot through with the homespun jazz charm that Graef has made his own of late.

Blaff
Blaff (Rhythm Tool Strip)
Untitled (The Island)
Hot Destinations For A Cooler You
Review: Given his love of twinkling melodies, warm electronics, new age chords and shuffling analogue house rhythms, Norwegian-in-Berlin Telephones seems a neat fit with Gerd Janson's Running Back label. The Ocean Called EP certainly chimes with Janson's love of picturesque deep house and glassy-eyed Scandolearica. There's happily much to admire, from the chiming melodies and crystal clear textures of "Blaff" (which, incidentally, is accompanied by a great bonus rhythm track), to the glistening beauty of "Hot Destinations" and darting, life-affirming positivity of "Untitled (The Island)". Of course, none of this will come as a surprise to those who've been watching his career blossom over recent years, but this is still particularly potent. Arguably, it's his best release to date and features some fine sleeve art from Sex Tags DJ Fett Burger.

Our Time Is Now
Extra Credits
Happy To Be Here
Review: Spanish deep house stalwarts Downbeat have pulled off a bit of a coup here, snapping up three typically raw cuts from Detroit legend Marcellus Pittman. At his best, Pittman is capable of making the sort of deep, warm and fuzzy house grooves that seem to float from the speakers, whilst retaining just the right amount of shuffling dancefloor grunt. That's certainly the case with the tumbling "Our Time Is Now" - all hazy chords, hypnotic rhythms and cascading melodies - and "Happy To Be Here", which layers bubbling electronics on top of a typically swinging analogue groove. There's also a trip into distorted instrumental hip-hop territory in the shape of the fearlessly stripped back "Extra Credits".

Romancing The Stone!
Frogs
Surpass
Review: Despite some FXHE releases containing playful artistic references to the films that undoubtedly referenced the titles, this Romancing The Stone double pack from Omar S is sadly lacking in any MS Paint renditions of the Michael Douglas and Kathleen Turner 90s vehicle of the same name. It does however contain four more fine examples of the fact no one does it quite like Omar S. Lead track "Leave" sets the tone, as ripples of percussion emerge from a pool of simmering sonic emotion and embarks on a masterclass in slow build dancefloor revelation at breakneck pace. "Romancing The Stone" pulls from the same palette of anthemic Omar S productions as "Here's Your Trance, Now Dance" and "Psychotic Photosynthesis" as a lead array of synths, keys and chords weave with supple grace over crunchy drums - watch out for the track finishing abruptly. On the second 12", "Frogs" dovetails from a simple disco guitar loop into fucked up abstract acid techno territory with little prior warning whilst "Surpass" finds AOS ending with some anthemic maximal piano house.

Gone Fishin
Acropolis
Red808
Blackstar
Review: For those who caught Furness' Four 4 The Floor EP, and are familiar with his work, this release is further evidence of how much of a fledgling purveyor of deep grooves and heavy-hitting rhythms Furness is. Title track Gone Fishing utilises string keys as the foundation of the track and marries the emotive, elongated synths with a dubby bassline and quick hitting snares. Acropolis is tougher, centering distorted pads against intermittent piano chords, muffled vocal grabs and a deep, cosmic bassline. Red808 is a no-nonsense roller, with its slick snare and hi-hat/hand-clap tandem working superbly against the climbing synths. Blackstar adopts a similar framework to Acropolis, wrapping up the EP in style with its similarly lo-fi, distorted percussion charged against rapturous chords taking the track into further sonic terrain.

Days Of Days
Chicago To Detroit
Review: REPRESS ALERT: After kicking off with a delightfully classy deep house EP from Chicago's Strong Souls, D3 Elements presents its second EP from Brian Harden. This long anticipated EP is reminiscent of his upbeat, melodic style that is his trademark after releases on Relief Records, Underground Therapy, NiteLife Collective, Moods And Groove and House 4 Life records. The Black 3 EP opens with "Qunu", a rhythmic homage to South Africa's Nelson Mandela. A complex piece filled with tribal percussions and vibrant melodic sounds that will keep you dancing. "Qunu" creates an addictive rhythm of warmth and color. "Days of Days" is a euphoric affair with lush chords, enticing percussions with a rising bass line. Light and airy with a compelling groove, it's a masterful example of genuine house. "Chicago To Detroit" closes out the release and lives up to it's title, touching on what makes house music from the two Mid West cities so very compelling.

Sloppy Cosmic (Moodymixx)
Hangover (Moodymann mix)
Review: Any release from Kenny Dixon Junior is cause for celebration, and this is no different. "Sloppy Cosmic" sees him offering up an unofficial remake of Funkadelic's "Cosmic Slop", seemingly re-made using the original master tapes. The result is a typically deep, undulating and laidback excursion that makes great use of Bootsy's bass, George Clinton's vocals and Amp Fiddler's keys over 12 mesmerizing minutes. As we've come to expect, it oozes horizontal soul from every scratchy groove. Flip for the even more cosmic "Hangover", a surprisingly sparse chunk of deepness featuring the ethereal vocals of Charlotte OC and more obviously floor-friendly beats.

Review: A sixth release from Appian Sounds finds the London based label (with roots in Dublin) continue it's focus on the split artist offerings with the Ervallagh EP featuring contributions from Miltiades, Life Recorder and label regular Natan H. Echovolt boss Ilias Pitsios has gone on record to call Miltiades "probably the best producer from Greece as far as deep house / techno stuff is concerned" and the evidence so far for Nous and Echovolt has backed that up. Here Miltiades offers a further reason to think that with the sublimely deep and rhythmically playful "S48SN" and it's well balanced out by two raw jams from French producer Life Recorder and the sweeping analogue vista of "Giving" by Natan H.

Review: *Limited 180g Orange Marble Vinyl Edition* The Mosaic split series is beginning to gather pace and is throwing together some interesting names of old and new vintage with truly compelling results. Volume three of the series draws for tracks from Ed Davenport and Ozka with the resultant tone most definitely one for fans of techno with a darker hue. Davenport needs no introduction these days and the Berghain regular's "Bloodchild" rides the fine line between house and techno perfectly with a dark twisted bass line driven groove and eerie vocal line that typifies his unique sound. Techno veteran Aubrey turns in a storming techno monster of a remix of Ed Davenport's unreleased "Islands" which represents a welcome return to Mosaic after his last appearance with the Contact Funk EP back in 1997! Representing the new school is rising Belgian techno talent David Nizet (aka Ozka) whose wonderful bass line driven dub-stab-fest "Thirteen Years" demonstrates why he's such a hot tip!

You'll Never Find
You'll Never Find (dub)
Review: It's a long-established fact that few producers can produce deep house of such stunning depth and musicality as Ron Trent. While dancefloor-friendly, his productions are the mucial equivalent of being gently caressed by a loved one. Certainly, that's the feel of "You'll Never Find", a typically deep, typically epic composition blessed with sublime vocals and wonderful music touches (think cascading synth solos, gentle acoustic guitars, wtinkling pianos, and dreamy chords). The accompanying dub accentuates many of these elements, using choice vocal passages to emphasize the Chicagoan's impeccable instrumentation and brilliant production. Any Ron Trent record is a treat, but "You'll Never Find" somehow feels extra-special.

Review: Amsterdam-based graphic designer turned producer Young Marco has previously shown hints of greatness, most notably with a pair of superb 12" singles on ESP Institute that layered picturesque melodies atop huggable analogue grooves. Here, he delivers his debut album, Biology, and it's every bit as warm, imaginative and luscious as his previous work. Each of the album's seven tracks is something of a gem, from the crystalline, new age house of "Sea World" and Vangelis Katsoulis-inspired ambience of "Out of Wind", to the Italo-influenced dancefloor pulse of "Suzaku" and rush-inducing, synth-heavy brightness of "Can You Really Feel It". It's one of those albums that will brighten up even the dreariest of days, and those sets are arguably few and far between.

Review: If you didn't know Patrice Scott was from Detroit, you could probably guess. You see, the Euphonium EP comes on like the soundtrack to a sci-fi tear-jerker yet to be made, all intergalactic chords, deep space pads, melancholic melodies and eyes-closed rhythms. Scott is a past master at this kind of unadulterated deepness, of course, but there's still something impressive about the beatless beauty of "B3", the cymbal-driven deep techno melancholia of "A1", and the otherworldly shuffle of "B1". All three tracks are brilliantly immersive, offering the kind of enveloping escapism that Scott does so well.

Review: The original version of "Pay Me" appeared on the Cozmic House E.P. which highlighted some archive works from New Yorker Ben Cenac; a fine piece of archival research from Thug Records. Now the Australian label has enlisted two Italians with a sensitivity towards vintage sounds to turn out some high grade remixes. Simoncino has the A-side in rapture with a crisp, boogie-inflected jackhammer of an instrumental mix, before he gets into a slower, slinkier mode for the dub mix. Nicholas delivers a more techy approach for his remix, keeping the retro-romanticism intact and letting some of the vocal slip back in.

Review: In three years of operation the power-house trio Pittsburgh Track Authority have hammered out a staggering amount of high-end material, focusing on outboard methods and a classic approach to house and techno that punches hard without losing the soul. Now they present their debut album, and it delivers on all the fronts you would hope for. There's a Detroit-friendly pressure to their production style, whether dropping the sample-licking heat of "Broader Disco" or whipping up a dubby synth icing on top of snaking techno opener "Genta", but they never put a put wrong. For instant satisfaction without a compromise on ideas, you can do far worse than these eight fine sounding cuts.

Review: House doesn't come much more foundational than this gem, reissued straight out of Chicago in the mid 80s. This repress stays faithful to the original release with a multitude of versions of the track, depending on where exactly you plan on using it. By and large though, it's all about the full-blooded original cut with the curious vocal tones and that seminal bleepy synth line that hooks into the heads of all present and won't leave for days. Don't overlook the "Untitled Mix 2" on the B side, where the beat gets dropped in favour of letting the fulsome bass come to the fore with just some tense strings to accompany the vocal. Either way, this is a classic jam essential in the bag of any self-respecting proto-house head.

John Tejada & Adrian Leviste - "Fashion Avenue" (remix)
Ewan Jansen - "New Stride" (Deez Follow Da Bass remix)
Review: "Classics" releases work best when the material being showcased is either obscure, hard to find or overlooked. Much of the material on this third trawl back through the vaults of Mike Grant's Moods & Grooves imprint ticks all these boxes. For example, Andres' "Just A Player" - a refreshingly loose and bumping fusion of warm disco samples, snappy beats and a killer bassline - has never previously appeared on wax. Then there's the soul-flecked, jazz-house/broken beat hybrid "Fashion Avenue (Remix)" by John Tejada and Leviste, which sounds remarkably fresh despite being 14 years old. As for Brad Peterson's strutting, acid bass-propelled "Trickchords", we're struggling to find any reference to it having been released before. Whether it has or not, it's as essential as the rest of this superb EP.

Review: Ah the humble double pack, isn't there something so very satisfying about this format? Sccucci Manucci evidently thinks so as The Nine Bows EP is the label's second release in succession to embrace the double pack. It's another high profile cast that contribute to the eight tracks here, with Montel, Mikki Funk, Jackson Ryland and Aashton all featuring. It's the latter, Brighton-based producer who opens proceedings with "I Can't Shake It", a summer house anthem in the making that showcases his love of a classic RnB vocal. Maverick follows with "Wait For U" which is not only his Sccucci debut but also the Parisian's first production committed to wax - hard to believe! The mood swings through various shades of house from here with "Lemme Hold U" from Montel a mid point highlight thanks to a killer vocal hook.

Review: It seems surprising that this debut album from Kassem Mosse should appear with little fanfare, but that's apparently how the acclaimed German producer wanted it. Predictably, it's rather good. Rippling with fuzzy analogue warmth, crusty drum machine rhythms, toasty keys and alien electronics, it offers a selection of undulating deep house cuts in his inimitable style. At times - such as on the soulful shuffle of "Untitled A1" and jazzy "Untitled D1" - it sounds a little like vintage Moodymann; at others, Mosse's techno influence is much more apparent (see the wonky throb of "Untitled D1"). Throughout, Workshop 19 is formidably atmospheric.
