Minimal/Tech House
Track 1 (7:18)
Review: The EEE series may utilise a very simple blueprint - each single-sided, one-track release combines tasty, 21st century tech-house grooves with vocal lifts and instrumental samples from a classic cut - but so far, the publicity-shy producer behind it has yet to put a foot wrong. This ninth instalment in the ongoing series is every bit as alluring as its predecessors, in part because the headline-grabbing Nina Simone vocal samples are used sparingly and dropped into the mix for maximum impact. They mainly appear within the melodious, smile-inducing breakdown, before making way for a return to the track's chunky, seemingly squeezable tech-house groove and sweet, glassy-eyed lead lines. On paper it shouldn't work, but it really does, making this another must-check EEE release.

Skies Over Sheffield (Luca Lozano Sunshine On Sharrow mix) (5:59)
Skies Over Sheffield (96 Back Eccy Beach Heatwave mix) (7:17)
Skies Over Sheffield (John Shima Rainclouds Over Renishaw mix) (6:08)
Review: After acrimoniously parting company with Warp Records - a label they helped to establish - in early 1990, Forgemasters (Rob Gordon, Winston Hazel and Sean Maher) continued recording music, most of which has remained unissued ever since. 'Skies Over Sheffield', which Hazel rediscovered on a DAT tape last year, is one such cut. Featuring typically skittish, electro-influenced drums, weighty sub-bass and a mixture of rave-igniting stabs and picturesque organ motifs, it's a genuine lost classic. The must-have original mix comes backed with a trio of 2020 reworks by Sheffield-based producers: a hardcore influenced breakbeat interpretation by Luca Lozano, a bleeping electro revision by 96 Back, and a rolling, futurist house remix from John Shima.

Orson's House (mix 1) (5:43)
Orson's House (mix 2) (6:14)
Review: Second time around for Transparent Sound single 'Orson's House', a classic chunk of driving, sub-heavy tech-house that first appeared in 2001. The duo's original 'Mix 1' and 'Mix 2' versions - here featured on the flip - are classic examples of the early British tech-house sound, which fused the sub-heavy strut of early UK techno with the sci-fi sounds of Motor City techno and the swinging machine drums of house music. Those looking for a more fully formed, funk-fuelled take should check the A-side 'James Harrison Subfunk Mix', where spacey pads, tweaking acid lines and alien-sounding lead lines ride a chunkier, more energetic groove.

Independent Woman (6:06)
Chris Stussy & Litmus - "Kaizen" (6:45)
Review: Minimal groovemaker Chris Stussy and his most regular home label PIV label are inspired by the 90s-era US house sound. Think warmth, soul, and fluid grooves that come with deft samples that speak to the heart. All of those things characterise his latest outing on PIV across four killer cuts. 'Across Ocean' is a breezy, easy to love and timeless slice of house before 'Seeing & Believing' goes deeper, with a vulnerable vocal and neat chords that bring the feels. There is a more biting tech house edge to 'Independent Woman' and lastly Stussy links with Litmus for 'Kaizen,' with its lush synthscapes and cool electronic sound.

Whisper (7:09)
Freak (7:08)
Faze (7:08)
Review: He might not be able to play his trademark brand of swinging, UK-centric tech-house tunes to the public in clubs right now, but East End Dubz continues to serve up singles packed full of dancefloor-ready treats. His latest missive is predictably strong, particularly A-side 'Whisper'. An impressively atmospheric affair, the cut features lo-fi sounding electronic melodies rising above a chunky, hypnotizing bassline and his usual crispy, snare-heavy tech-house drums. The fun continues on the flip where 'Freak', a squelchy, acid-flecked mid-set bumper built around a limited number of teased and tweaked elements, is joined by 'Faze', which sounds like the sort of thing Sheffield sorts Swag released in the late 1990s and early 2000s.

Different Point Of Structure (12:05)
The First Thing You Hear (11:15)
Review: After the first couple of releases by label chief Remus, Rominimal hero Barac Nicolai is handed the reins for the Blue imprint's third edition. Enchanting polyrhythms are undoubtedly the order of the day across The First Thing EP, with the Bucharest-based producer's usual knack for eloquent track titles as well. On the A-side, we have 'Different Point Of Structure' which is a driving and energetic main room workout with subtle dub techno influences and utilising the hypnotic qualities of previous work, while the B-side cut 'The First Thing You Hear' is a more stripped back and minimalistic affair reaching near tribal moments, but this one is definitely more suited to heady afterhours moments.

Out Of Time (Patrice Baumel mix) (8:30)
Out Of Time (instrumental) (9:44)
Review: Well, we're used to hearing Sasha on some progressive tip or, at least, bouncing around in the same space as labels like John Digweed's Bedrock, but here we have proof that the veteran producer is still out to diversify his sound and reach new audiences. The long-time DJ and producer steps up on Cologne's mythical Kompakt stable with "Out Of Time", a magnificently suave and laid-back house bombshell guided by the man's unmistakable prog-flex; this is the sort of gear you want to hear as you step into the dance and sip that first cocktail... a certified mood changer. On the flip we're graced with a few tenacious remixes; Patrice Baumel delivers an eight minute rework of the original, this time filtered through a much housier sort of guise that reminds us of the twilight hours on the Balearic islands' sandy beaches. Check the instrumental too - it'll be a useful DJ tool for sure.

Track 4 (6:47)
Review: OGE White is pretty much already a buy on site label for those who like their minimal classy and deep. This is their fifth EP in 12 months and after the slippery and seductive open comes a celebratory tune that teases until it pleases when a big vocal bursts out of the perfectly reduced bass and synths. Track 3 is another perfect pairing of expertly designed minimal grooves and a choice vocal sample that brings the soul. That fine trick is reputed again on the final cut, which has a recognisable melody line all chopped up and reworks to fry your brain.

Review: At PIV Records, the imprint's founders are using their Dutch/Indonesian heritage as a cultural aspect to create a unique blended output, which is significantly visible in the artworks and merchandise of the label. The latest release as part of their limited vinyl series comes from rising Utrecht-based young gun Joren Edwards, who is hot off his debut release not long ago on Archie Hamilton's Moss Co. PIV 005 features some swing-fuelled hypnotic tech house jams such as 'Funkaholic' reminiscent of (iO) Mulen or Jack Wickham. It also receives a deep, dark and dirty rework on the flip by legend of the Parisian underground Dan Ghenacia. Alternatively, if you are looking for some quirked out microhouse, check out 'Helling' which is perfect for getting weird at the afterhours.

Review: Telomere Plastic is a limited edition Wex sub series "sharing electronics from all around the spectrum." This first missive is a strong various artists release, The Telomere Connection, featuring sounds from Sherman C, Rural Red, JD Typo and Anderson. It's a lithe and synthetic affair that kicks off with bendy tones and warped pads while 'Wax On Wax Off' is a more drum-focussed grover with rippling kicks and sci-fi details. The future facing 'Dancefloor Between' gurgles with soft acid bubbles and 'Glider Girl' rounds out in bumpy fashion.

Review: Guy From Downstairs marks his debut on Pleasure Zone with four expertly reduced minimal grooves that are riddled with brain tickling sine waves and icy hi hats. 'Baba Novabass' is a symphony of sleek late night sounds with a catchy groove and 'Dil' (feat Mandela) has a bulbous bassline that ebbs and flows beneath razor sharp percussion. Upping the ante is the more high speed drum work of 'Lamps' with its squelchy stabs and muttered vocal and finally 'Mission Accomplice' layers up late night and jazzy chords with rockets rhythms and a subtly pumping b-line that works those hips.

Review: F Communications, the ling time label run by French techno legend Laurent Garnier, keeps on marking its 25th anniversary with an on point series of releases, remasters and remixes of some of its best moments. For many, Alexkid's 'Dont Hide It' will always be synonymous with the late great Andrew Weatherall, who dropped it into his Fabric mix in sublime fashion. That was the vocal version which is a dirty, rasping, jacking cut with a breathy vocal totally at odds with the filthy production. The a-side is an acid workout from 303 maestro Josh Wink that is quite different, but also just as killer.

Review: Berlin's Meander imprint has had a fairly quiet year in 2020, so we're happy to finally hear some new material. Further exploring Romania's fertile musical environment, it is now over to the enigmatic Pirvu, who first made a great impression with his debut on Rummenigge a couple of years back. He's since had some breakout releases on Club Guesthouse, Unanim and Understory. The 1.9.3.6. EP sees the Bucharest-based producer consider the ethereal aesthetic so commonly attributed to DeWalta's label, while incorporating his usual arcane and mysterious properties into this collection of tracks. From the mystical and evocative groove minimalism of 'C'est La Vie Tu Joci Parsiv', to the rolling and hypnotic main room action of 'Simpozion' to the swing-fuelled boompty-funk of 'Condimantsl' which channels that Cabinet Records vibe of old.

Opticamente Avanzando (11:53)
OP.AV (6:26)
Planos De Ausencia (Casualidad mix) (3:59)
Review: After the outstanding Devious EP from the label bosses, Secretsundaze is back with a new 12" from emergent Dominican artist Boundary. Once again, there's a vitality and urgency to the tracks the label is pushing, finding in Boundary a thread of inventive techno that sounds fresh and authentic at the same time. 'Opticamente Avanzando' surges with a Detroit grittiness, ethereal pad swoops and a sizzling carnival atmosphere, stitched together in a masterful, dense mix perfect for peak time transcendence. 'OP.AV' takes things deeper, letting a cascade of synth motifs fall around a nagging, break-embellished rhythm section. 'Planas De Ausencia (Causalidad Mix)' is a striking departure into fractured ambient electronica, where the beats fall apart and slide into new grooves around blissful swathes of melancholy melody. Classy stuff, which should appeal to lovers of vintage techno as well as those craving something new.

Review: Longtime main room techno cohorts Extrawelt have sure been around a bit, and later in October will release their latest album Extra Welt Hits on Cocoon. But before that the German pair land on Traum with three more of their muscular and robust analogue workouts. 'Mr Wednesday' is a real teeth clenching ride with a taught baseline snaking beneath slapping hits. 'Little We Know' lightened the mood with airy flute sounds and a more rubbery and warm bassline that does some fine acrobatics. Last of all, 'SEM' gets back to paranoid and dark dystopian techno territory and will keep dancers rooted to the spot.

Review: After previously treating us to some Underwater Tales and a trip to the Dream Factory, KSKY returns to 10010 Records to celebrate a New Era of Tenderness. In practice, that means serving up a quartet of emotive and melodious tracks that explore the deeper and more tactile end of the electro spectrum. He begins by wrapping fluttering, mind-soothing synthesizer motifs around a bubbly electronic bassline and crunchy machine drums on 'New Era of Tenderness', before adding new age ambient style chords and jaunty lead lines to an even deeper electro beat on 'Dreamy 5D'. '808 Waterfall' is a pin-sharp and positive number rich in yearning chords and starry melodies, while 'Hermerc' sees the producer successfully employ rugged acid lines, punchy drums and gaseous pads.

Review: To launch their One Trip To Avyon series, Heko Records has turned to the combined talents of label regulars Gianmarco Orsini and Pancratio. What they've delivered is an EP full to bursting with tracks that combine the trademark basslines and percussive ticks of vintage Chicago house with the swing of contemporary tech-house, the far-sighted, futuristic synthesizers of Motor City techno and the sparse melodic refrains of UK bleep and bass. It's an alluring blueprint that provides plenty of our highlights. Our picks are the attractive and bass heavy 'PHFT' and bleeping opener 'The Rhythm of Ure Earth', but all four tracks are suitably strong.
