Minimal/Tech House
Track 1 (9:12)
Review: It's that time again! East End Edits are back with another cheeky, pop-inflected minimal techno workout. As always, the remixer's identity is under tight wraps but as soon as that vocal drops you'll sure know who they borrowed the hook from. Booming, tough rolling UK tech house aimed squarely at the main room at peak time, the dense bass pulsations of the original compliment this version perfectly, alongside the gorgeous come hither vocal. Hand-stamped, one sided heavyweight 12" vinyl in limited copies.

Airier (8:38)
Petrichor (6:32)
Head Over The Clouds (7:05)
Review: It's been a good couple of years since Japanese micro-house specialist So Inagawa released a solo single. The arrival of the Airier EP on Cabaret Recordings - a label he co-founded - is therefore cause for celebration. The title track, in particular, is rather wonderful. It's warm, sumptuous and spacey, with cascading electronics, disconnected vocal samples and gently dubbed-out motifs wrapping themselves around a tactile, bass-heavy groove. It's the kind of cut that should appeal to both deep house and tech-house DJs. On the flipside you'll find another deep space shuffler (the rather attractive "Petrichor") and a rolling chunk of micro-house blessed with super-deep chord progressions (the aptly titled "Head Over the Clouds").

Soul Control (Palms Trax remix) (5:51)
Review: Back in 2014 Galcher Lustwerk and Palms Trax were both emergent artists making their first tentative steps into the scene. While they may be thoroughly distinct in their sounds, they found some crossover in an exchange of remixes, with Lustwerk's take on "Forever" appearing on Lobster Theremin. Palms Trax returned the favour with a version of Lustwerk's "Soul Control" which never saw the light of day until now. While it's certainly redolent of the earlier phase of Palms Trax's career, the effervescent musicality at the heart of the release is still completely in step with Palmsy as we know and love him today, replete with Lustwerk's inimitable laconic vocal delivery over the top.

Ron & Roland - "Nassaur Bassed Party" (6:46)
Spacebunny - "Spacebunny" (6:29)
Coke, Stoned & Bailey's - "Your Dad" (6:01)
Review: Surreal was a sublabel of Swag Records that operated around the tech house scene of the mid to late '90s. After 17 years of silence, the label awakens from its slumber to repress a few of the choicest cuts from the back catalogue. First up is Ron & Roland, otherwise known as Laurant Webb, whose acid-laced "Nassaur Bassed Party" sounds as fresh and infectious as it did back in '96. Spacebunny's self-titled opus takes thing deeper, but there's still a strident metallic groove that harks back to the early days of tech house in fine style. Cheeky trio Coke, Stoned & Bailey's only made a couple of drops on Surreal, but "Your Dad" is surely one of the strongest - a rubbery acid line and splashes of dub all over the shop.

Vocoded Memories (4:45)
Zensation (4:27)
Review: Mr Ricecooker is a moniker from DJ Tizza, a long time friend of this label who serves up more of his timeless intergalactic weaponry here. "Villavolta" is gritty and paranoid, with a real sense of unease in the synths. "Artificial Amnesia" is a more bullish stomper with punchy kicks and bass before "Dream Absorber" (Prophecy Girl mix) is somewhere between the two but with a filthy great old school sawtooth synth ripping up things. Add in the freaky late night deep tech of "Vocoded Memories" and blissful trip that is "Zensation" and you have an expertly produced EP of fresh and cosmic minimal.

Clarobscur (7:46)

Epilog (7:13)
Trivial (7:27)
Review: The past year has seen Vern rise to prominence within the ever-bustling Romanian minimal scene, thanks to releases on Lokomotiv, Joule Imprint, Re.Face and Rowle. Now he follows fellow scenester Priku to Serbian label Octophonic with more of his richly defined, widescreen club cuts. "Clarobscur" is a warm and fluid workout with plenty of dubwise inflections around the core groove, while "Delight" is a chunkier affair with a weighty low end and playful synth work shimmering around the rock solid rhythm section. "Epilog" sports a rolling shuffle and feelgood chords pulsing throughout, and "Trivial" does what every self-respecting B2 should, and cools the session down with some aqueous pads and an expressive dose of funk.

Viha (5:58)
Samsara (6:46)
Ederlezi (8:10)
Review: Shanti Radio's particular brand of dancefloor-focused goodness has long been hard to pin down, with its roster of artists offering up the kind of evocative, atmospheric and ultra-melodious fare that brilliantly blurs the boundaries between tech-house, deep house and progressive house. You'll find more of the same on this fine debut EP by new signing Soul of Void. A-side "Viha" sets the tone, with hazy male vocals, exotic south eastern European instrumentation and stirring stings rising above a tactile tech-house groove. Title track "Samsara" explores similar sonic territory, albeit with chunkier grooves and more twinkling piano motifs, while "Ederlezei" is the kind of bright, breezy and sun-kissed concoction that would sound great blasting from speakers at a humid afternoon dance.

East End Boys (7:23)
Sunrain (12:08)
Review: There's been quite a boom in minimal tech house edit labels in recent years, and here's another addition to the list: Retrospect - reshaping the '70s, '80s and '90s with the sounds of now. On Volume 4, there's a very familiar synth-pop hook on "East End Boys" and there's an obvious clue in the name. A slick and spacey 'Rominimal' style groove in the vein of scene stalwarts such as Sublee or Alci. On the flip, we have the more ethereal and downbeat deepness of "Sunrain". We can't quite say what the original was, but it certainly could have been the perfect closing track to this year's Sunwaves - if only it could possibly have happened!

Wings (Sepp remix) (7:09)
Review: After some promising releases by Doubtingthomas, Durrred, Yoshitaca and Ittetsu, Ukranian tech house hero Silat Beksi returns with the new one for Lille, France based Gaazol - created by Beunes William, Corton Axel and Molle Corentin. 'GAAZOL 004' is well worth your time: from the trippy and rolling A side cuts like "Anna" with its ethereal vibe, or the bass-driven and hypnotic bliss of "Awaia" with its subtle acid overtones. On the flip, he teams up with German producer Daniel Broesecke once again to follow up last year's massive "Get Some More". The track here is "Wings" which receives a wicked rework by Rominimal maestro Sepp (Uvar) who takes the track into truly arcane territory as always - you could imagine this one being played to the morning crowd at Sunwaves (but maybe next year!).

Mark Thibideau - "Late Train" (7:47)
Review: The Joule imprint continues to wreak havoc on our charts, and this latest collaboration between brothers Matt and Mark Thibideau is exactly the right thing for you if you're looking for some effective house grooves. Matt Thibideau's first two tracks, "Evaporation" and "Time Stands" are both effortlessly punchy deep house bangers with a strong dub-techno presence at their core, deep in the lower ends of the tracks; Mark's two licks are no different, both similarly laying down heavy 4/4 punches with mounds of echo and dubwise filtering. Smooth and elegant DJ tools.

Marina Verdi - "Shamanwoman" (4:19)
Barac - "Who Says Imagniation Isn't Reality?" (8:37)
Review: Since launching last year, Barac's Shamandrum label has become a must-check for those who like their club cuts to be psychedelic or mind-altering. He kicks off the imprint's fourth EP by reconstructing Marina Verdi's mesmerising, beat-free vocal cut "Shamanwoman" (track two), brilliantly re-imagining the track as a slowly-building chunk of hallucinatory tech-house laden with wiggly acid bass, hypnotic drums and pulsing electronic motifs. As he has done on all of the label's previous releases, Barac provides an original production of his own on the flip. "Who Says Imagination Isn't Reality" is nominally tech-house, though the track's locked-in electronic rhythm, creepy synthesizer melodies and bubbly acid lines are a world away from bog-standard peak-time "tech". In a word: impressive.

Traffic Jam (7:31)
Bus Stop (7:06)
Review: Matthew "Bushwacka!" B may not be as high profile a producer as he once was, but it's worth remembering that he was once one of the leading lights of both the early UK tech-house movement and the recently revived breakbeat house sound. The two tracks featured here touch on both styles in a roundabout way, and were first released way back in 1997. "Traffic Jam" is an insatiable, funk-fuelled peak-time workout that sees the London scene mainstay pepper a vintage, electro-influenced breakbeat house groove with UK garage style bass, fizzing scratch sounds, warm deep house chords and selected vocal samples. "Bus Stop" meanwhile is jaunty and melodious, with chiming, ear-pleasing riffs riding crunchy house drums and the kind of booming bassline that was all the rage in London at the time of recording.

This Is A Dream (8:32)
Crushed By Meditation (8:29)
Review: Techno heavyweights Tiga and Matthew Dear team up again to follow up 2013's massive anthem "Let's Go Dancing" and the terrific 'Nightclub' EP from a few years back. Their new collaboration "This Is a Dream" is a tunneling and low-slung trip, which according to Tiga the Turbo chief is 'an epic poem, an immunity passport to the boundless dimensions that lay beyond the veil of slow wave sleep'. On the flip, "Crushed By Meditation" has Audion all over it on this strobed-out and psychedelic stomper that calls to mind the same vibe as his mid noughties hits such as "Mouth To Mouth" or "Kisses" - totally massive!

199? (5:59)
Review: Low Money Music Love is already a firm favourite with deep digging heads. The Berlin based label has roots in Frankfurt and Amsterdam but now looks to fresh UK collective Felon5. This is the unknown outfit's debut EP but it suggests they have spent plenty of time on the dance floor and digging back into the OG tech house heyday of the mid-nineties. All four of the cuts here hit hard, with lithe synth lines and scintillating metallic percussion all detailed with plenty of cinematic sci-fi motifs. Party pumping but deep, it's hard to pick a standout here but the slippery funk of "Dumblefloor" sure is irresistible.

Hollywood (6:46)
A Trabajar (7:49)
Clementines (5:15)
Review: Berlin's Roche Madame crew is keeping quiet about the identities of the producers behind its "Roche Edits" series, in part because of the sample-heavy nature of the tracks on show. Having previously borrowed bits from a Depeche Mode classic on the series' 2019 debut, this belated sequel opens with a bright, breezy, chunky and funky number that makes use of numerous samples from the epic 12" version of Frankie Goes To Hollywood classic "Rage Hard", including Pamela Stephenson's infamous spoken word section. Over on the flip, "A Trabajar" wraps tech-house beats and spacey electronics around a low-slung, punk funk style groove, while "Clementines" is a whirlwind of tactile tech-house grooves and dreamy choral vocals.

Locic & Dan Formless - "No Laughing Matter" (9:04)
Yama Music - "Back Where You Belong" (6:31)
TIJN - "Nikkee" (7:14)
Review: This EP marks something of a departure for self-proclaimed "tripped-out micro-house" imprint Yama Music, which previously acted solely as an outlet for the fast-rising production duo of the same name. They're present on this EP of course, opening side B with the pulsing pads, weighty sub-bass and glitchy beats of "Back Where You Belong", but the majority of the tracks come courtesy of like-minded producers from around the Globe. Birdsmakingmachine make a big impression with the mind-altering acid bass and crunchy machine drums of "Moorbet", while Locic and Dan Formless successfully join forces on the simultaneously chunky, weighty and hypnotic "No Laughing Matter". Our pick of a very strong bunch is TIJN's closing cut, "Nikkee", which wraps a jazzy bassline and smooth drums in gorgeously warm and woozy sci-fi chords.

Review: Follwing up a brilliant inaugural release that featured the likes of Melodie, Halo Varga and Rowlandz, next up on Texan imprint Ubiyu we've got a metting of two great minds: Montrealer minimal/microhouse maestro Pheek (Archipel) teaming up with the ascendant Los Angeleno Kike Mayor. This is the second time together since their collaborative debut on Metroline Limited last year. Features two original cuts: the reduced tribal funk of "No Chance" which also receives the Dub Side Of The Moon remix by Frenchman Doubting Thomas, the deep afterhours shuffle of "11" which gets reworked by Florida man Chad Andrew with Just Me. Their brilliant perspective channels the very best of classic UK tech house with its tough rolling bounce.
