Review: Although Nightmares On Wax's debut album "A Word of Science" (1991) had its moments, the blend of bass-heavy Bleep techno and hip-hop influenced workouts was arguably a little skewed. It was 1995's "Smokers Delight" that introduced us to what would now be considered the trademark George 'E.A.S.E' Evelyn sound - a weed-stained blend of dub, soul, hip-hop and sun-kissed positivity that endures to this day. As this limited edition 25th Anniversary pressing proves, it remains a great album that's lasted the test of time remarkably well. This time round there's more luxurious packaging, coloured records (one red, one green) and a download card that allows access to four previously unreleased cuts. Grab a copy, light up and enjoy!

Review: Thundercat's last album, 2017's "Drunk", is undeniably one of the greatest full-lengths of the past few years - a dizzyingly varied and mind-altering affair that mixed and matched styles to create thrilling new fusions of past and present sounds. He's at it again on this delayed follow-up "It Is What It Is", which was co-produced by Flying Lotus and includes an impressive cast-list of guests and collaborators (think Kamasi Washington, Ty Dolla Sign, Steve Arrington, BADBADNOTGOOD, Lil B and Louis Cole for starters). Musically it's impossible to pigeonhole - think rubbery 80s funk meets spiritual jazz meets reggae meets hip-hop meets experimental beats meets... you get the idea - and that makes for inspiring listening. Whether it's quite as good as "Drunk" is debatable, but it's certainly superb.

Review: As fast-rising underground stars in their own right, you'd expect any collaborative album from soul-fired South London singer/songwriter/beat-maker Tom Misch and prolific jazz drummer Yussef Dayes (best known for his now long-running collaboration with Kamaal Williams) to be rather good. "What Kinda Music" is, with the pair mixing and mangling elements of soul, jazz-funk, electronica and jazz, a set that defies easy categorisation. Both musicians exceed themselves throughout, with tipsy electronics, sweeping strings, bass, effects-laden guitars, woozy synth lines and Misch's heartfelt, soul-flecked vocals offering a perfect foil for Dayes' loose-limbed, headline-grabbing drumming.

Take Fight
Review: Earl Jeffers has been doing some sterling work over the last few years, pushing a soul-enriched house sound from his own drops to collaborations with the likes of Byron The Aquarius and Henry Wu. He's back on his own label Melange, this time alongside the mighty K15, and as you can expect it's a record bursting with musicality, spirituality and boundless broken beat delights. From effervescent lead track "New Visions" to the sultry downtempo lull of "Propel Ahead" and on to the club-ready bump of "Take Flight", this is an EP that places both artists at the forefront of contemporary funk-laced, soulful house music.

Review: The 2000 Black crew is keeping tight-lipped about the details surrounding this release, describing the previously unknown Project X as, "a non-partisan group primarily operational in the late 20th century" whose "only confirmed action was creating and compiling previously unreleased music to highlight various events of the time". So far, so mysterious. Whatever the identity of those behind the project, the album is well worth a listen. Its shadowy creators flit between high-octane dancefloor jazz ("S-Kai", "Q To Start"), organic downtempo grooves (the sun-kissed "Grape Juice" and samba-soaked warmth of "The Lost Words"), synth-sporting takes on the heady Rotary Comnection sound ("Psych") and giddy jazz-funk ("The Recovery"). The real stand out though is "Brave Games", which sounds like a thrill-a-minute fusion of Batacuda, jazz-funk and dancefloor jazz.

Review: While jazz is never far from Tenderlonious' thoughts - he is a proficient flautist and the man behind the superb Ruby Rushton combo - he has plenty of other musical strings to his bow, as last year's rather fine "Hard Rain" album proved. "After The Storm", his latest EP, treads a similar sonic path, tiptoeing between ultra-dreamy, sunrise-ready deep house (the fluttering flute solos and Larry Heard grooves of the superb title track), Kaidi Tatham style jazz-funk fusion ("G Flex"), broken deep house smoothness with added Herbie Hancock synths ("D Low"), and crunchy 21st century jazz-funk ("Broken Hearts Club"). In other words, it's business as usual for one of Britain's best.

Review: Although he's one of the most revered DJs in the UK with a wide following of like-minded eclectic music heads, Mr Scruff very rarely releases mix albums or compilations. It's for this reason that his edition of the "DJ Kicks" series is such a big deal. That mix itself - available on CD and digital download - is naturally superb, but his selections, which are showcased here in unmixed, DJ-friendly form, are also top-notch. Starting with the drowsy hip-hop soul of Max Graef's jazzy rework of Andreya Triana's "Gold", the Manchester veteran offers up a hot-to-trot mixture of downtempo soul (Sudan Archives), off-kilter Afro-tech (Tiger), ragga (Ding Dong), Floating Points style house (his own hook-up with CyberPunkJazz), drum workouts (Andy Ash), synth-powered proto-house (Alexander Robotnik), Latin beats and much more besides. Ace.

Review: Missouri-based beatsmith Bonus Points has been casually slinging out his homebrewed blend of laid back funk-laced skits for five years now, but this 7" drop on Cold Busted marks the first time his music has graced wax (bar the odd moonlight on a compilation here and there). Whatever the case, the vibe on this modest record is impeccable, capturing a kind of easygoing, feel good strain of dusty samples that channels a touch of Quantic. If you've been missing that brand of mellow groove in your life, this 7" should have you setting adrift on memory bliss from the moment the needle drops.

Review: Some 30 years after rising to prominence via a now legendary NYC radio show, veteran hip-hop DJs Stretch Armstrong and Bobbito Garcia have finally made a debut album. It sees them join forces with specially created nine-piece combo The M19s Band to serve up fresh covers of a range of well-known and obscure "dance floor bangers" (as the accompanying press release puts it). There are some superb interpretations, with the Police's dub disco jam "Voices Inside My Head" becoming a sweet soul-jazz treat, the Clash's "Magnificent Dance" reborn as a Latin jazz number (complete with Rich Medina spoken word vocal) and Womack & Womack's "Baby I'm Scared of You" a seductive, shuffling Afro-Cuban jazz standard. In a word: brilliant.

Review: Psych voyagers par excellence The Heliocentrics are back, some three years after they dropped the incredible soundtrack to LSD documentary "The Sunshine Makers". "Infinity Of Now" drops on Madlib Invazion, which speaks to the fertile crossover zone The Helio's occupy where funk and hip hop collide with psych in scintillating fashion. The sound is fierce and heavy as the album opens up, with a dose of horror schlock poured into tracks like "Venom", calling to mind some of the German kosmische trippers like Brainticket. Raw, wild and oh-so live, this is up there amongst the best from a band with a glittering track record.

Review: In recent years drummer and percussionist Richard Spaven has hit the heights thanks to acclaimed albums on Soul Has No Tempo and, most recently, Real World Studios. His breakthrough release came much earlier though - a 2010 contribution to Jazz Re:freshed's now celebrated "5ive" series of mini-albums. Here that set gets a release on vinyl for the very first time to celebrate its tenth birthday. It remains a hugely entertaining affair, with Spaven and his collection of collaborative players (including vocalist Jose James) offering up tracks that brilliantly blur the boundaries between nu-jazz, jazz-funk, hip-hop and dusty downtempo beats. It was arguably a little overlooked first-time round, but as this edition proves, much of the music is pleasingly timeless (meaning it still sounds delightfully fresh).

Review: After building a career as ambient, electronica, dubstep and glitch-hop fusionist Slime, Will Archer reset his career in 2017 and re-emerged as Wilma Archer with a new jazz-flecked sound. On debut album "A Western Circular", he goes one step further, delivering a set four years in the making that's undoubtedly his most ambitious and impressive work yet. Mixing and matching elements of jazz, neo-classical, softly-spun pop, folk, hip-hop (MF Doom makes a surprise appearance), Jon Hassell style 'fourth world' fusion, slow burn soul and opaque electronica, Archer offers up a collection of songs and instrumentals united by a shared sense of late night atmosphere and intricate musical detail. It's a staggeringly good set that should be at the top of your shopping list.
