Review: A fantastic long player here from Ghost Box affiliated artist Pye Corner Audio on Massachusetts (by way of Birmingham) experimental record label Type. Spread across two slabs of colour vinyl, The Black Mill Tapes Volumes 1 & 2 ranges from ethereal ambience ("A Dark Door") to slow mo Balearica ("We Have Visitors"), epic soundtrack music ("Theme Number Four") and rogue Italo ("Building Twelwe, Room One"). All in all, this is a remarkable, challenging and ultimately rewarding listen that will pique the interest of inquisitive ears. Not much is known about the man behind the PCA moniker - also known as Head Technician - and to be honest we love it that way. Sublime artwork too.

Review: With the neon funk of the Shobaleader One project dividing opinion, you might think it would be back to business as usual for Tom Jenkinson as he goes back to the Squarepusher moniker proper. If you did you'd only be half right - whilst the album nevertheless trades in the hyper stylised D&B that made his name, it's saturated with melodies rooted in 90s rave, riffing on trance tropes. Whether he's been listening to the saccharine sounds of younger label mates Hudson Mohawke and Rustie is unclear, but those into the intricate sugar, coated complexities of those younger artists will find much to admire in Jenkinson's direction here.

Review: An impeccably lavish return for Seahawks aka Lo Recordings' John Tye and Pete Fowler, with Tender Abyss an expanded and much needed vinyl edition of the duo's 2010 Cdr for Bunkland Records. A further six tracks have been added to the original edition, and all twelve tracks have the Seahawks setting sail from their traditional beautifully textured horizontal landscapes of Greater Balearica for a musical tone more reminiscent of those celebrated American synth auteurs Daniel Lopatin and Mark Maguire of Emeralds fame. You can't really accuse Fowler and Tye of trudging up mere pastiches however, as all the tracks here are resplendent with the signature attention to detail that has drenched all the Seahawks output to date. Tender Abyss is a fully immersive and quite hypnotic listen and comes replete with the usual swoon-worthy packaging, with a 500 pressing of clear blue 12"s housed in a clear plastic sleeve and accompanied by full colour labels, various heavyweight colour prints and stickered logos.

Review: Otherwise known as Demdike Stare's Miles Whittaker, Suum Cuique is a moniker in which he has free reign to create warped, noisy analogue shapes. Opening with the searing, white hot metal of "Strohtopf", you'd be forgiven for thinking that the album moves away from the quiet reverence of the Demdike Stare project, but "Kuiper Anomaly", grit-caked as it is, is soothing stuff. Elsewhere, he lets minimal sounds take free reign, exploring the simple pleasures of echo and reverb - "Atlas Levels" and "Core Value" especially are reminiscent of Bristolian radiophonic knob-twiddler Ekoplekz, whilst "Intonation" has echoes of the lumbering soundscapes of labelmate Andy Stott. But despite the parallels that can be drawn with his contemporaries, Ascetic Ideals is a singularly bleak, yet undeniably beautiful record - one that only Miles Whittaker could have made.

Review: The alias of American musician Rachel Evans, The Motion Sickness of Time Travel is the latest addition to the ever expanding Spectrum Spools catalogue, and in a year of fine releases from the label this self titled album stands out as one of its best. Although the artist was introduced to world by a blink-and-you'll-miss-it vinyl run on Digitalis in 2010, this record should see her gaining wider admiration. Although her synth based sound has echoes of Oneohtrix Point Never and Emeralds, her vocals - although shrouded in reverb and reduced to mere sounds - imbue her synth drones with a sense of humanity a lot of her peers lack. With four tracks clocking in at nearly 100 minutes long, you'd think it would require serious patience to appreciate this album, but despite the tectonic evolution of her soundscapes, she draws you so far into her world you'll never want to leave.

Icon Eye (DVD)
Review: The ever adventurous Rvng Intl. offer up a real treat here, as two L.A musicians were sent to Jamaica to work alongside The Congos in recreating the reggae legends classic Icon Give Thank LP. The end result is quite a delirious affair, as the purity of The Congos jars against the wobbly, jelly-like production values of their new-found collaborators. Piling on a dense amount of detail in each track, there is something rootsy at work in the middle of the dizzying vocals, synths and drum machine echoes which does the original material justice. It's sometimes an unsettling listen, but a fascinating one nonetheless.

No Stars
One Hundred Years Deep
Review: In the first of three EPs for Warm collective's own label, Face & Heel are a Cardiff based duo settled in an interesting midway point between indie pop and electronica that behaves like techno while seemingly fitting in with the more emotional end of the dubstep aftermath. On "No Stars" the pitched-up vocals duel with rounded bass pressure and a gossamer beat while the main melodic content comes on thick and dramatic. "One Hundred Years Deep" takes a more polite stance as (presumably) Sinead McMillan's vocals come through clean and untreated while the track operates in a similar headspace to Clams Casino.

Review: Where Uwe Schmidt is involved, you never quite known what you're going to get musically. Over the years, he's produced all sorts of weird and wonderful fare under a dizzying array of pseudonyms. Here he dons his Atom TM hat and joins forces with fellow German producer Tobias Freund, a man with a deep love of sound and a knack for creating distinctly atmospheric techno. So, you'd expect experimental floorfillers, right? Not a bit of it. Instead, Grand Blue offers a classical-minded, near beatless mix of improvised piano pieces and wall of sound ambience. It's perhaps a curious choice, musically, but the staggering quality of the production - sounding uniquely distant and crackly, yet close and comfortable - helps to make it an utterly engrossing listen.

Review: Finally Nils Frahm’s classic album ‘The Bells’ sees a first vinyl edition in deluxe packaging incl. album download code

plus 3 Exclusive Bonus Tracks! Nils Frahm, born in 1982, had an early introduction to music. During his childhood

he was taught to play piano by Nahum Brodski – a student of the last scholar of Tschaikowski. It was through this

that Nils began to immerse himself in the styles of the classical pianists before him as well as contemporary

composers. Today Nils Frahm works as an accomplished composer and producer in Berlin. In early 2008 he founded

Durton Studio, where he has worked with Peter Broderick and Dustin O’ Halloran amongst other fellow musicians.

As the curator of the Swedish boutique label Kning Disk’s Piano Series, Peter Broderick invited Nils to record a new

album of piano improvisations – the result is 'The Bells', which will now be released on the London-based cinematic

music label Erased Tapes in the UK, Ireland and North America. Perhaps the most stunning aspect of what on the

surface appears to be an entirely pre-planned and composed body of work comes with the discovery that these

pieces were in fact improvised. These two friends share a common affinity in that they now be released on the

London-based cinematic music label Erased Tapes in the UK, Ireland and North America. Perhaps the most stunning

aspect of what on the surface appears to be an entirely pre-planned and composed body of work comes with the

discovery that these pieces were in fact improvised. These two friends share a common affinity in that they both

possess an absolute mastery of melody, composition and performance – able to deliver with devastating effect. The

modest Mr. Broderick states ‘I remember thinking to myself as I lay there stunned, that I could spend ten years

trying to write an amazing piece of piano music, and still it would never be half as good as these improvisations!’

Recorded in a rented, beautiful old church in the heart of Berlin over two nights, Nils ‘just played’ with the

occasional instruction from Peter ‘I spouted “Make a song using only the notes C, E, and G”, or "Make a song that

you could imagine me rapping over the top of" (Track 8 – ‘My Things’). At one point I was even inside the piano,

laying on the strings, asking him to make a song called ‘Peter Is Dead In The Piano’. The resultant work 'The Bells'

Forte Music Distribution

shares the same excitement and air of playfulness. In contrast, his debut release 'Wintermusik' consists of three

piano led pieces, coloured with occasional celesta and reed organ parts. Most recently Frahm and Broderick reinterpreted

Pink Floyd’s ‘Is There Anybody Out There?’ for MOJO’s covermount CD ‘The Wall Rebuilt!’. According to

MOJO ‘Hamburg-born pianist Nils Frahm spent the last few years creating wondrous, haunting music. Together they

accentuate the orchestral qualities of Pink's lament, the track's sense of paranoia amplified by the choral resolution

of this version". For a musician this early in his career, Frahm displays an incredibly developed sense of control and

restraint in his work. As the recognition continues to grow for both releases, we are pleased to announce that 2010

will see his next album release on Erased Tapes. • The CD comes in a Deluxe Digisleeve containing a Free

Download Voucher for the brand new Erased Tapes Collection II.

PRESS: 'Hamburg-born pianist Nils Frahm spent the last few years creating wondrous, haunting music' – MOJO

'Already a recognised figure in musical circles, Nils Frahm is now gaining access to a wider audience with these two

releases. While The Bells and Wintermusik present different facets of his music, they above all showcase the man’s

exquisite talent and his perfect command of his art' (4.7/5) – The Milk Factory
