Back To The Day (feat Elliott Cole) (3:28)
Take It Up A Notch (feat Wax & Herbal T) (3:10)
Review: Everyone's favourite Jack of all trades unleashes another dynamic doublet from his latest album for some cheeky 45 thrills. "Take It Up A Notch" turns a block party into a blockbuster with serious Ugly Duckling style flows from longstanding collaborators Herbal T & Wax while "Back To The Day" takes us straight to the boudoir with some gorgeous honey dulcets from Elliot Cole and on a bed made of LOA's slinkiest soul grooves. We're notch worthy.

Love Ritual (4:18)
Love Ritual (Bwana mix) (4:16)
Review: "Love Ritual" has long been one of Al Green's best-loved cuts. It first appeared on 1975's Al Green In Love and has since appeared on countless compilations. This, though, appears to be the first time the track has appeared on a 7" single. You'll find the peerless original version - an urgent, organ-heavy affair in which Green's impassioned vocals ride a surprisingly tribal, Afro-influenced groove - on the A-side, with the later BWANA Mix on the flip. This sparkling remix and re-master, which creates a little more dancefloor pandemonium by including an extended passage of drums, freestyle vocals and organ solos, became an anthem on London's rare groove scene during the '80s.

Connie Laverne - "Can't Live Without You" (2:44)
The Anderson Brothers - "I Can See Him Loving You" (2:44)
Review: This essential soul 7" brings together two exceedingly hard-to-find 1970s classics for the very first time. On the A-side you'll find Connie Laverne's deliciously sweet and soaring "Can't Live Without You", a 1974 cut that sits somewhere between classic dancefloor soul and the then emerging Philadelphia International, proto-disco sound. On the flip you'll find another low-down, orchestrated slice of proto-disco perfection from New Jersey duo the Anderson Brothers. While nowhere near as tricky to track down as Laverne's A-side, "I Can See Him Losing You" is nevertheless similarly inspired and should be in the collection of every serious soul enthusiast.

Keep On Keeping On (2:56)
If I Could Only Be Sure (3:21)
Review: Two sides, two years, two source labels: This powerful soul blast 45 captures two sides of LA songwriter Nolan's criminally short recording career. The A is his famous northern soul / Joy Division-riffed favourite "Keep On Keeping On" from 71 on cult soul imprint Lizard while the B "If I Could Only Be Sure" is a smoother R&B cut from his time on MCA's ABC imprint. Loose limbed feel good funk and swooning bluesy soul with big harmonies, this represents Nolan's diverse range with respect and timelessness.

'Bout To Blow (4:00)
Saints & Beggars (3:30)
Review: Feeling lucky? With grooves as raw, sizzling and energetic as these, there's a strong chance you might be. Hot on the heels of their "Mesquite Beat" 45 comes this equally earthy and frank doublet. "'Bout To Blow" is a big pant swinging blues affair while "Saints & Beggars" takes us up a notch with a whirling 6/8 signature whirling waltz where the horns and drums take the lead and we follow in their every dreamy footstep. Look out for the album Mesquite Suite coming on Tramp very soon.

Review: Vocally-led by child sensation, Foster Sylvers, The Sylvers family grew into their own throughout the 70s, and 1973's The Sylvers II really instilled their sound as the gold standard fo funk music. We're talking about a family of kids who were all incredible musicians, truly offering the world a heartfelt performance, whichever aesthetic they were going for. Mr Bongo has delivered the goods once again with this reissue, and we are totally stoked about the fact that we are receiving the sort of funk and soul which still has not been experienced by everyone. It is about the mystique, it is about the charm, and it's most certainly high time for some soothing soul direct from the source - oh, and check that bassline on the magnetic "Handle It". Recommended.

What It Is (3:01)
Nice (3:22)
Review: Super rare, super funky late 60s business courtesy of Tramp who featured Joe on their recent album Movements Vol 9. "What It Is" plays on the classic haunted house riff with a little New Orleans switch up and stacks of sleazy blues while "Nice" is a smoother, Withers-style jam with warm as toast vocals, floating flutes and a swooning ballad finish.

Review: Mr Bongo are spoiling us right about now. With OG presses of the Compton collective's one-and-only album from 1976 fetching high figures, to say this this reissue is long-awaited is an understatement. A dynamic, energetic and tight body of work, the vibrancy ranges from the epic soaring vocals and doo-wop of "Why Do Fools Fall In Love" (which tips a wry nod at the style of the famous brotherly troupe who share the same name) to the blazing soul funk flames of "Boy You're Dynamite". Complete with the classic sample source for the likes of Public Enemy, Basement Jaxx and many many more. A truly historic record, this has matured impeccable. Thank you Mr Bongo!

Crossroads Of Love (2:36)
One More Time (4:05)
Review: Fresh to the Israeli groove scene, new eight piece troupe The Faithful Brothers bring a surging sense of soul to the party with two authentic cuts that sit alongside the likes of Charles Bradley or The Ephemerals. Rich in sentiment, powerful instrumentation and produced with warmth, "Crossroads Of Love" has an energetic northern soul style stomp and swing while "One More Time" is a much slower, swooning emotional rollercoaster. An immaculate debut.

Please Stay (2:32)
I'm In A Groove (2:17)
Review: Unless you've just dropped a whopping 1,500 quid on an original copy, this Outta Sight reissue of The Ivories sought-after 1966 debut single should come as good news. The record - and in particular the superb A-side version of Tom Dersey's "Please Stay", which sounds like a sweeter, looser and more expansive take on Motown girl groups such as the Supremes - has long been a "holy grail" for many crate-digging soul DJs. Interestingly, the lesser-celebrated B-side "I'm In A Groove" takes a completely different approach, seeing the Ivories (a trio of high school students who returned to their studies straight after the record was release) doing their thing over a brilliant rhythm and soul backing track.

Review: Cannonball celebrate the big two-oh with this delightful find of an original take of Gaye's seminal "Inner City Blues". Famously covered by Gil Scott Heron and Grover Washington Jr, here the legacy continues as the Italian collective rebooted John's recording with their own subtle instrumentation. With a full studio version on the Take side and rawer, floor-hitting funk finish on the Acetate side, we guarantee this will make you want to holler...

Melba Moore - "The Magic Touch" (2:24)
Maxine Brown - "It's Torture" (2:44)
Review: While most remember Melba Moore for her string of disco and boogie-era classics, she actually started her career at the tail end of the 1960s recording soul stompers in Nashville. "The Magic Touch", which here gets the reissue treatment, is a typical Northern Soul style four-to-the-floor slammer that was recorded in 1967 when she was 22 years old and has previously only been issued on a hard-to-find 1986 single. This time round it comes backed with Maxine Brown's similarly popular Northern Soul scene staple "It's Torture", which remarkably went unissued until Kent Records discovered it in the Ace Records vault back in 1985.

Be What You Are (3:03)
Everything Was Wrong (2:52)
Review: Brand new soul sextet Principals Of Joy make themselves known with this fiery debut 45. "Be What You Are" is a strident bluesy number where singer Sarah Ibrahim puts her heart on the line and takes our hearts away before a supreme guitar solo slides us into heaven. "Everything Was Wrong" ups the tempo with a slightly rocky take on a northern soul stomp where once again Sarah lays down some serious soul power. A joyous debut.

Funky Overdose (1:34)
Review: Soul auteur Jonathan Diggs Duke returns to one of his older EPs for a timely reissue. Originally released in 2015, just after his critically acclaimed debut album on Giles Peterson's Brownswood, the three tracks catch Diggs at his most flighty and free-thinking; "Ambition Addiction" jumps and rolls like a tightly coiled jazz spring before hurling us into the deep harmonic soulful blue of "Welcome" and "Funky Overdose" lives up to its name with its off beat magic, tightly plucked guitar and staccato vocals. Addictive.
