Review: Considering the wild, untamed nature of releases on Contort Yourself to date, the premise of this compilation is a tantalizing prospect. Digging deep into the underbelly of 1980s minimal wave, industrial and much more fringe activity besides, this extensive collection is not for the faint hearted. There are moments of beauty, moments of horror and plenty of just plain weird transmissions that evoke the era they came from so powerfully. Doxa Sinistra, Human Flesh and an early outing by Merzbow are all standouts in what is a truly wonderful document of a fearless time in genuinely underground music.

Review: Julien Baker's debut 'Sprained Ankle' garnered critical acclaim on its release last year for its impressive writing. Considering Baker's age, at only 22 years old she's already creating worlds of stunning dream-pop with a craftsmanship that could stir envy in more experienced songwriters. 'Turn Out The Lights' showcases her talent even further, exploring a melancholy world against a backdrop of sparse echoing instrumentation. The moments of subtle intensity are striking, such as the album's cinematic opening 'Over', whose stirring strings and sparse piano pour seamlessly into the next track 'Appointments. Baker's voice is controlled and her harmonies are arresting, and she uses expansive vocal layering to build intensity, pulling back just before it overbears the listener. This impressive second milestone in Baker's work is heartfelt, cathartic and more than impressive.

Review: After Beady Eye split in 2014, Liam Gallagher appeared conflicted about whether he would pursue a solo career, resolving in 2016 that this year's album was set in stone. Fans of previous work will undoubtedly be contented with solo debut 'As You Were', with it channelling the British pop influence, singalong riffs and the classic anthemic writing that Oasis were famed for. As expected from a Gallagher brother, the album is drenched in hubris, but Liam lets his guard down with surprising and rare moments of what seems to be vulnerability. Aside from the cocky rock and roll swagger, it's these moments that give 'As You Were' a little more depth than people were perhaps expecting.

Review: They may not be the most iconic Kurt and Courtney duo in history, but they're a pairing that definitely works well. 'Lotta Sea Lice' meets somewhere in between Kurt Vile's spiritual slacker country & western, and Courtney Barnett's self-effacing indie rock. Vile's Pennsylvanian drawl and Barnett's Aussie spoken-word blend perfectly, seeming as though they're bouncing off each other's natural relaxed coolness. The duo trade verses, lines and even each other's songs, with a cover 'Out Of The Woodwork' from Barnett's 2013 double EP, and Barnett offering a stripped back solo version of Kurt Vile's 'Peeping Tomboy'. Interestingly, they cover each other so well that either party could have written the original. In this way, this collaboration makes so much sense that, hopefully, it won't be limited to one album together.

Review: 'Go Farther In Lightness' is the sophomore album from Australian indie group Gang Of Youths. Following their candid and broad 2014 debut 'The Positions', they've returned with an album which is bold not just in its opus-like size, but also in its attempts to document the emotional highs and lows of life, relationships and grief. They draw from a range of influences, with elements of pop-punk, post-punk and indie-rock in the mix. There are even passages of orchestral strings, with 'L'imaginaire', 'Le symbolique' and 'Le Reel' punctuating the heavier moments with reflective pauses. The combination of lyrical storytelling and anthemic writing sounds reminiscent of The Hold Steady and early The Killers. What sets Gang Of Youths apart from other bands in their field - particularly on this album - is their sheer ambition, conviction and aspiration, which undoubtedly demands respect.

Review: In the four years since his debut album as King Krule, south Londoner Archy Marshall has been busy as solo artist, collaborator, rapper and producer. He now returns with 'The OOZ', an expansive record that's densely packed with disparate musical influence, dark and personal storytelling, and Marshall's distinctive sneering charisma, all framed in his usual backdrop of seedy urban vaudeville. It's an incredibly layered album that offers the listener a guided tour through this disturbing and decayed landscape of atmospheric smoky jazz, grunge and ambient. Even at nineteen tracks with a runtime of just over an hour, The OOZ is something of an epic that never feels overdrawn, by dint of its richly illustrative, engulfing and transportive nature.
