Review: Hailed by some as an invigorating two-finger gesture directed at the blandness and homegeneity of the modern music world, yet castigated by others as a mindlessly yobbish throwback, Sleaford Mods have divided opinion like few bands of recent memory. Yet 'Key Markets' would seem to form the point at which they truly leave the stereotypes of yore behind and make their mark as a gritty and vital force; punk rock in spirit yet informed here by krautrock groove, electronic music and hip-hop, and dominated by the incandescent ire of vocalist Jason Williamson, this is a dazzling monument of modern misanthropy, a triumphant and paradoxically life-affirming statement of disenfranchised rage.

Review: Australian combo Tama Impala has always been hard to pin down, with their two studio albums to date displaying a keen desire to capture a trippy, psychedelic vibe, whilst refusing to settle on one easy-to-categorize sound. Currents, their fourth album, continues this trend, toning down some of the psychedelic rock elements in favour of nods to blue-eyed soul, woozy dream-pop, cheery summery pop (see the radio hit in waiting "The Less I Know The Better"), and even the head-nodding rhythms of hip hop (which, incidentally, prove the perfect backing for the morphine pop wooziness of "Past Life"). It's a blend that re-casts the band as baked, inter-dimensional travellers with a neat line in enveloping, sun-kissed downtempo pop.

Review: Also a member of Real Estate, Ducktails mainman Matt Mondanile explores a more dreamlike and impressionistic mindset with Ducktails; despite their being initially co-opted into the journo-created world of 'hypnagogic pop', Ducktails have always been a band with a distinctly indie mindset, beaming post-C86 guitar chime through a prism of summery abstraction to create a radiant wash of sound as melancholic as it is beguiling. 'St. Catherine' forms by far the most assured and well-crafted statement this winning and winsome talent has created thus far; leaving generic tags behind, this is simply a collection of irresistable songs rendered with soft-focus taste and heavy-lidded charm.

Review: In a music landscape seemingly micro-managed and steeped in cliche to the point of inescapable blandess, the maverick spark of an artist like Ezra Furman is something to be valued very highly. His third album 'Perpetual Motion People' crams more ideas, energy, eccentricity and chutzpah into its thirteen tracks than most bands can dream of in a career. Wracked by self-doubt he may be, yet Furman here channels his angst, inspiration and flamboyant joie-de-vivre into a kaleidoscopic collection of exuberant ditties that sashay with blues-rock, jaunty punk-pop and acoustic introspection whilst maintaining a vibrant pull all Furman's own. The sound of a unique talent blossoming in rare style.

Review: These Chilean psychonauts have already made a considerable name for themselves on the psych circuit, largely owing to their Dusseldorf-derived love for the three 'R's (repetition, repetition, repetition). On 'III', however, they take a sharp left turn into a style that's arguably even more bewitching, and serves to set them apart from their contemporaries. The shortest song here is nine minutes long, and the mesmerising pulses of these travelogues owe as much to the ruthless geometry of techno as they do krautrock motorik or desert ambience. One for fans of Nissenenmondai and Elektro Guzzi as well as Moon Duo or The Cosmic Dead, 'III' is a frontier-walking mantric masterstroke.

Review: David Pearce - the auteur who has always been the main protagonist of Flying Saucer Attack -has been silent for some time, and this new album comes as something of a bolt from the blue for his many admirers, who've waited fifteen years for the next opportunity to visit his beguiling pastoral soundworld. Containing nothing but his guitar, this austere yet starkly magical record could have been made by no-one else - haunting reverb-drenched melodic filigree, feedback-swathed dystopia, folk-tinged drone and celestial ambience all abound on a collection of extrapolations that prove that Pearce remains resident of a channel of inspiration far beyond the reach most all psychedelic journeymen.
