Review: Having previously delivered EPs inspired by African, Jamaican and Brazilian musical culture, 4 Hero co-founder Marc Mac continues his imaginary global adventures by paying tribute to Japan in his own inimitable style. He begins by charging onto neon-lit big city dancefloors via the jazz-funk/broken beat/nu-jazz positivity and spirituality of 'Tokyo Nightlife', before reaching for deeper chords, traditional Japanese melodies and extra-percussive bruk rhythms on 'Kambei'. 'Electric City Don't Sleep' joins the dots between YMO, City Pop and the neo-classical works of the late Ryuichi Sakamoto, while 'Yasuke Soul' is a sun-soaked, subtly Far East-infused jazz-funk delight. The whole thing is soul-soaked sonic perfection, as you'd expect from an artist of Marc Mac's experience and calibre.

Review: If you were digging the sound of The Paradox, Jeff Mills' 2021 collaboration with keys virtuoso Jean-Phi Dary, you should be very excited indeed to see the return of Tomorrow Comes The Harvest. The project originated in Mills and the late Afrobeat architect Tony Allen working together around 2018 on live shows and an album, and in the wake of Allen's passing Mills has kept their project alive with Dary and Indian tabla player Prabhu Edouard. Improvisation and interwoven rhythm is at the heart of the project, and the considerable skills of each player reach staggering heights on this monumental record, released to coincide with the trio's world tour.

Review: Drawn from a soundtrack Barrott was commissioned to write for the Japanese documentary Johatsu -The Art of Evaporation, this release explores ideas of living simply and focusing on kindness, grace and gratitude. Opening track, 'Kyoto', ripples into focus, floating through a blue-sky dreamscape and punctuated by hazy choral vocals. Another standout track, 'Icarus', is a jazz-electronic fusion piano piece, merging traditional instrumentation with a softly encompassing clarinet solo. A fantastic release from Barrott, taking contemporary Balearic to the next level.

Review: Dan Ubick is best known as Connie Price, generally found playing with his band The Keystones. But here he's been invited to indulge in a different kind of pursuit by none other than Madly and Stones Throw driving force Egon. They started the Madlib Invazion Library Series to invite certain talented friends to indulge a particular sound in the particular mindset of library music and for Ubick that meant exploring the depth and breadth of something he calls canyon funk. The name is quite explanatory and here you get some heavy funk grooves laced through with Ubick's twanging guitar for a sound which splits the difference between country and funk and comes off sounding like the consummate library album in the process.

Review: Australia's Analogue Attic plays home to a second solo album from Sean La'Brooy, the label co-founder and one half of Albrecht La'Brooy. This collection has six sublime compositions that are designed to soundtrack some moments of downtime or accompany you through some of life's more winning moments. It is made from field recordings and "commentary from a range of codes" which weave their way betwixt and between silky saxophone lines and piano chords. Review: Blake Reyes is an alias for Italian artist Luca Vertulli and on this release for Jeff Mills' Axis Jazz collection he presents an extended double pack of hi-tech soul of the highest calibre. Recorded between Bologna, Milan and Rome overseen by Mills himself, Vernacular takes us deep into the heart of Reyes' vision, leading with the standout track 'At Night'. Anna Bassy's vocal sits front and centre on the original version of the track, but the B-side offers up alternative versions which let Reyes' assembled players shine through. Sides C and D offer up further excursions into hidden possibilities from the project such as the epic synth symphony of 'Sound Manifesto', mirroring the warm, instrumental charm of Mills' own Millsart releases and recent collaborations with Jean-Phi Dary.

Review: Given that heavily psychedelic, dub-tinged, mid-90s style breakbeat excursions are back in fashion, it's the perfect time for Ron Henry and Daniel Goganian to reboot their Children of the Bong project. Earlier in this year, the former Planet Dog duo dug into their archives and issued a seven-track set of previously unreleased recordings. Here they repeat the trick, serving up a swathe of cuts recorded before and after the release of their cult debut album, Sirius Sounds, in 1995. Review: The artwork for this new 12" from the System 108 label is eccentric enough to make you want to check out the music even if you don't know the artists. It's the sort of cover that suggests the music will be left of centre and quirky and that it is. 'Sao Januario' is a deep and lazy groove with sunny chords and jazzy keys that take you to the global south. 'Sunny Villa On A Distant Planet' is a twisted disco cut with house leaning drums and big cowbells under intergalactic synth lines. 'Rolando Nascer Do Sol' then rides a crisp electro breakout to keep you on your toes and 'OWL WCS' slows down for a cuddly back-to-mine style closer.

Aqua Cheta is a blend of proper electronic examples of Balearic and chill out influences. 'Caduca' (Hear & Now remix) is ideal for the late-night scene with a blend a perfect blend of 80s and 90s but still sounding futuristic. Manu Archeo's remix of 'Dulcis' is a beautiful laid back downtempo jam that shimmers like a hazy day on the beach. We think you will like the organic and mystical 'Fluminea' as well. This EP couldn't finish any better than on the ambient tip with a soul warming float on the marina remix by Ocean Moon. Fans of Balearic, Cafe Del Mar and chill out music will treasure this EP no doubt. This 12" comes with a CD as well.

Review: After a two-decade interlude, Jim O'Rourke's Moikai returns with Spectral Evolution, a major new work by Rafael Toral. Making his name in the mid-1990s with influential guitar drone platters like Sound Mind Sound Body and Wave Field (both reissued by Drag City in recent years), Toral has never been one to rest on his laurels repeating past glories. In the early years of the 21st century, Toral began his "Space Program", a 13 year investigation of the performance possibilities of an ever-expanding set of custom electronic instruments, played with a fluid phrasing and rhythmic flexibility inspired by jazz. Dedicated to honing his skills on these idiosyncratic instruments, Toral founded his Space Quartet, where his mini-amplifier feedback integrates seamlessly into the frontline of a classic post-free jazz quartet rounded out with saxophone, double bass, and drums. Since 2017, Toral's work has been entering a new phase, often still centred around the arsenal of self-built instruments developed in the Space Program, but with a renewed interest in the long tones and almost static textures of his earlier work; he has also, after more than a decade, returned to the electric guitar. Spectral Evolution is undoubtedly Toral's most sophisticated work to date, bringing together seemingly incompatible threads from his entire career into a powerful new synthesis, both wildly experimental and emotionally affecting.

On the first record, we're treated to 'The Phoenix', a sure-fire funk gem with a super-warm sound - beat is as cool as it gets, with a laid-back and funky attitude sitting beneath a joyous intermingling of sitar, flute, brass and guitar, all performed at expert levels. 'The Kraken', meanwhile, channels a killer groove, strutting at 85 bpm and incorporating a huge brass section which pumps loud, while flute solos and funky Wah-guitar chops take things up a notch.

Review: Thundercat's last album, 2017's "Drunk", is undeniably one of the greatest full-lengths of the past few years - a dizzyingly varied and mind-altering affair that mixed and matched styles to create thrilling new fusions of past and present sounds. He's at it again on this delayed follow-up "It Is What It Is", which was co-produced by Flying Lotus and includes an impressive cast-list of guests and collaborators (think Kamasi Washington, Ty Dolla Sign, Steve Arrington, BADBADNOTGOOD, Lil B and Louis Cole for starters). Musically it's impossible to pigeonhole - think rubbery 80s funk meets spiritual jazz meets reggae meets hip-hop meets experimental beats meets... you get the idea - and that makes for inspiring listening. Whether it's quite as good as "Drunk" is debatable, but it's certainly superb.

Review: Kamaal Williams has described The Return, his debut solo album, as "a natural evolution from the Yussef Kamaal project". Yet while that was made in collaboration with drummer Yussef Kamaal and played around with jazz in its myriad forms, The Return sees the man sometimes known as Henry Wu stamp his own mark on proceedings. So while "visionary jazz" (as the press release puts it) is his aim, this manifests itself in a range of ways. Contrast, for example, the leisurely jazz-funk flex and stoned feel of opener "Salaam" with the more groove-driven, dancefloor vibes of "High Roller", where sinewy strings tumble down over hip-hop influenced live house beats, meandering Herbie Hancock style synths and a superb bassline.

Moreover, they are respected by the very best of the contemporary DJs, including Worldwide FM's ever-present Gilles Peterson. This deluxe edition of V2.0, the ensemble's second studio album, will provide you both with a decently-priced copy of the vinyl edition, along with plenty of added bonus takes and interludes that were missing from the original cut. Thanks to subtle waves of electronica and improvisation, GoGo Penguin are putting the "contemporary" into jazz and, along with that, providing us with an LP that is changing conceptions of the genre for younger audiences.

Review: It's certainly true that Ma Fleur represented a pivotal moment for The Cinematics. The outfit came to fruition, or at least hit the common conscience, in the haze of late-1990s post-trip-hop comedowns, a time when we were all still going harder, faster and stronger in clubs but wanted something cosy and velveteen on the after party hifi at 10AM rather than ketamine techno. Far more innocent times to say the least.
This 2007 record broke from the well established mould of the troupe, though, landing five years after its predecessor (Every Day) and opting for a more direct approach to loveliness. A kind of grab you by the throat and make you feel nice type remit that leaves the subtleties of the past behind in favour of more traditional big room, show stopping song craft.

Review: SAULT's body of work is almost untouchable. The mysterious collective has turned out plenty of it in the last couple of years with no fewer than four fantastic albums. This one is a complete left turn, though, which ditches the edgy alt-rock, sou land jazz for an altogether more subbed and symphonic sound. It is a soaring astral soundtrack with plenty of wide open spaces, grand arrangements and plenty of uplifting and celebratory sounds drawn from hugely spiritual choral music and contemporary classical.

Review: London jazz star Oscar Jerome proves he can bend spoons with jazz on his latest LP 'The Spoon'. Like a red-pilled soothsayer, he reduces all metal to its constituent molten parts, largely through the mode of lo-fi, dreamy pop jazz and neo-soul. Paeans to lockdown ('Sweet Isolation'), flourishingly spiritual harp and guitar interludes ('The Soup', 'Aya & Bartholomew') and impeccably produced singles ('Channel Your Anger', 'Feed The Pigs') make this a thoroughly difficult-to-pin-down yet texturally deep album, reminiscent of the production mastery of electronic fusion greats like Morgan Agren or Burnt Friedman. It's Jerome's best yet by far.

Review: Some expansive, cinematic, orchestral spiritual jazz for you here, from the trio of talents that Fumio Itabashi, Kuniyiki and Henrik Schwarz. While the latter two are generally better-known for their deep and sometimes tech-tinged house and ambient productions, the original mix of 'Watarese' (featured here on side B) is a dense, immersive jazz soundscape laden with evocative Japanese vocals, improvised piano, moody orchestration and definite nods towards vintage free-jazz. Spiritual Life supremo Joaquin 'Joe' Clausell provides the remix and, somewhat predictably, steals the show. His take is gently rhythmic, sun-splashed spiritual jazz full of hand percussion, fluid piano motifs and rubbery double bass.

Review: There are plenty of rich influences in this EP from Coflo - from the Latin percussion to the jazzy melodies, the tribal drums sounds to the lush depths of the drums. That makes it the sort of EP that that is perfectly suited to the warmer months, to bar parties, sundown sessions and dancing outdoors under the hot sun. 'Transition Deep' (Coflo remix) kicks off with the gentle patter of percussion and flute melodies that life your soul. 'Menina' (Coflo's mix) has more of an Afro feel to it and 'Feels Like' (club Fusion mix) is a lively one with big chords plenty of cosmic guitar lines.

Review: The Mechanical Man is something of a hero amongst deep house heads, so Toronto label Selections are rightly buzzed to have him on board. He opens up with a lively broken beat number lavished with a superb r&b vocal sample and sunny chords on 'Be Down.' He sinks into a more cuddly and smoky house groove on 'Let It Ride' and allows the pensive leads to take over as you head through the stars. 'The Night In The North Area' has a fresh bassline darting about underneath muted chords that bring a Detroit feel. Last of all is the soulful joy of 'You Know It's True', another one with a classic sample smartly worked into a scuffed-up deep house shuffle.

Review: Coming to PIAS' 40th Anniversary celebrations series, we hear Mark Thomas Griffin, better known as MC 900 Ft. Jesus, rerelease six tracks of his best works in the realm of bombastic hip-hop, rap, electro, cut-up, big beat and jazz. To illustrate the artist's sense of humour, Griffin's stage name came from a sermon by Oral Roberts, in which the televangelist claimed that a 900-foot-tall (270 m) Jesus Christ had come to him in a vision. Perfectly obscure cuts for any contemporary hip-hop/beats DJ, most of these tracks originate from Griffin's standout 1991 album Welcome To My Dream, a leftfield/cut-up opus in its own right.

Review: Having recently unfurled one synth-laden future jazz-funk classic (John Carroll Kirby's superb Blowout), Stones Throw delivers another fabulous album informed by the intersection between jazz, funk and synth sounds. Of course, Kiefer Shackleford's work has always been far more informed by hip-hop than Kirby's, and that remains a key point of difference on It's OK B U. While Shackleford loves showcasing his own piano and synth work (and it's those elements that frequently catch the ear), the accompanying beats - a mixture of head-nodding, Guru and Dilla style grooves, Flying Lotus style experiments, chopped-up breaks, wayward Dam Funk style affairs and slipped jazz rhythms - are equally as potent.

Review: So the legend goes: Tokyo dance music aficionados DJs Nori, Fukuba, Alex From Tokyo, and Kenji Hasegawa came together sometime in 2003, with but one ultimate goal: to bring together, in their own words, the best music, with the best sound system, the best hospitality, by the best management staff, in the best location. The result was Gallery Connection, a venue and soundsystem situated right next to Omotesando station, in the the heart of the city's upscale cultural rampart, Harajuku. Famously held on Sunday afternoons, this dream team's party is once again started with two reissued versions of their original CD fixture and DJ set go-to, 'Smile', flaunting its stylistic versatility: a signature Balearic-scenic Shibuya-kei track that resounds in memory as the time-honoured party's de facto theme tune.

Review: Skalpel is one of Poland's finest jazz outfits and this album captures them at their very best. It is a collection of some of their older material, all of it performed live by a masterful 17-piece big band with a wide range of sounds in their arsenal. At times the music is moody and low-lit, smoky and hypnotic, and at others, it breaks out into vibrant worlds and blissed-out feelings. The album was recorded during a sold-out performance in Warsaw at which Skalpel's founding members Igor Pudlo and Marcin Cichy, were joined on stage by the Big Band and led by Patryk Pilasiewicz.

Review: Oceanvs Orientalis and Ilhan Ersahin first entered each other's orbits by chance at a performance at Turkey's Cappadox Festival in 2018. Orientalis is renowned for his fusion of Eastern musical motifs and traditions with cutting-edge electronica, while Ilhan Ersahin has long plowed a unique path uniting assorted musical strains from around the world via an exploratory jazz-improv sensibility. Following two tracks ('Mesta' and 'Pire') co-written by Ilhan and OvO and released as collaborations, as well as two more Ersahin / OvO co-writes ('Revenge Of The Wankers' and 'Television') released under OvO's name alone, a fresh and exciting new song, '1980', now heralds a full-length collaboration slated to land in Spring 2024.
