Soulful Encounters Of The 3rd Kind
  1. Pick It Keep It (5:14)
  2. Feel The Rhythm Of Your Soul (6:04)
  3. Round & Round (5:33)
  4. Mojka In Space (5:52)
Review: London record label and party High Praise have put out a series of hotly in demand 12"s that have all sold out in record time. Behind this next one is Russian producer and DJ extraordinaire Lay-Far wo. This artist has landed on the likes of Lumberjacks In Hell, Razor N' Tape, Local Talk, BBE, AtJazz, Tru Thoughts and more, so is a key figure in the soulful, bass laden scene. And he serves all that up and more here with opener 'Pick It Keep It' layering old breakbeats with diving bass. 'Feel The Rhythm Of Your Soul' is a hyper speed drum workout with yelping vocals and then 'Mojika in Space' gets all pixelated and computerised in its melodies.

Gargoyle Records: Aliens On Acid
AGT
Cat: AGTE 01. Rel: 07 Dec 20
  1. Alienage - "Mindreader" (4:30)
  2. The Madd Scientist - "Funky Dreamz" (6:38)
  3. DJ Who - "Shitty Samples On Acid (On The Rocks)" (5:37)
  4. WhoDonIt - "House Rhythm" (4:59)
Review: Destination Baltimore 1995, Alienage (AKA Tony Pegas and Don Corrieri) indulged in a little lysergic and sonic experimentation. The results were a series of seriously heady club bangers released on Gargoyle and they still sound fat as hell 25 years later. This latest reissue sees Alienage take the lead with necksnap electro breaks, a sultry vox and buckets of sub before Pegas goes solo with his Madd Scientist alias on the b-boy style 'Funky Dreamz'. Flip for two from Who: the slamming TCR-style breaks of 'Shitty Samples On Acid' and an earlier 90s-style, heavily layered, slightly proggy jam 'House Rhythm'. Keep watching the skies.

JV Sports EP

  1. JV Sports (6:17)
  2. Reality Grid (6:03)
  3. The Last Arpy (5:47)
  4. The Last Arpy (Alec Falconer Madge E mix) (6:02)
Review: Anna Wall's The Bricks label continues to be a fine outlet for contemporary house, techno and breaks with this new missive from Inner Zone. It's his debut on the label and is a dreamy and nostalgic EP that looks back to a post-rave era and reimagines the beats of the day through a modern lens. Opener 'JV Sports' is pure Orbital bliss, 'Reality Grid' is a deeper and more introspective take, with crunchy beats and warped bass and then 'The Last Arpy' again takes off for another dimension with its far sighted chords and sleek hi hats. An Alec Falconer Madge E mix closes out with real drive and cosmic insight.

Same As It Never Was
Same As It Never Was (140 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: LIH 040. Rel: 11 Jan 21
  1. Good Thing! (5:42)
  2. Up We Go! (4:57)
  3. HEAVY (5:16)
  4. My Reflection (4:52)
Review: Moscow-based producer Alex Leyfa has been active for the best part of 10 years now, dropping albums on Local Talk and In-Beat-Ween as well as scores of EPs for City Fly, 4Lux, Soundofspeed, G.A.M.M. and many more. Now he's up on Lumberjacks with some choice cuts that show off his instinct for fluttering breakbeats as much as headsy house music, not least on the soaring, smooth delights of 'Good Thing!'. 'Up We Go!' rides another high grade break and chops up plenty of soul samples in the mix too, while 'HEAVY' explores a wilder broken beat terrain where you can almost visualise Leyfa getting creative on the MPC pads. 'My Reflection' completes the set with a seriously grooving house cut replete with loom bird samples and dreamy guitar licks.

Daydreaming EP
Daydreaming EP (140 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: CMR 002. Rel: 18 Jan 21
  1. Dance System (5:09)
  2. The Dredwerkz (6:17)
  3. Daydreaming (5:27)
  4. End Theme (6:45)
Review: Moscow-based producer Marco Lazovic has scored a few significant releases over the past five years, landing on Lobster Theremin and appearing alongside Minimal Violence on a cassette release back in 2016. After Funkyjaws' opening missive, DJ Craft's Craft Music label has invited Lazovic to throw down his bold and brassy take on soundsystem dynamics in a modern context. This is mellow, melodic music with a hefty bottom end touching on red-lining electro and electronica in equal measure, slipping into ambient jungle territory here and there and overall creating a delightful trip for the mind, body and soul.

Disengage EP
Cat: WNCL 039. Rel: 19 Jan 21
  1. Neutronics (5:49)
  2. Come Wid It (6:14)
  3. Disengage (5:44)
  4. Iron Fist (4:54)
Review: Now here's a treaty we can all sign: following cuts on the likes of E-Beamz, Warehouse Rave, Hooversound and his own co-owned Club Glow, Mani Festo comes crashing down in West Norwood with four more incendiary slap-downs. Raw diesel powered breaks with every rave echo you could ask for. 'Neutronics' hits with a cold slice of electro in the synth department, 'Come Wid It' hits with that stripped back technoid sound Bassbin Twins were so good at back in the day, 'Disengage' is all about the drum edits and that metallic, futuristic Botchit style while 'Iron Fist' closes the EP with a drum funk KO punch that's so hard you'll forget all about lockdown.

Motions EP
Motions EP (12")
Cat: ECR 008. Rel: 18 Jan 21
  1. Motions (6:20)
  2. Sex Drive (7:19)
  3. Hibiscus (6:18)
  4. Motions (PMA remix) (6:17)
Review: This marks a first ever solo EP for Canberra based producer and DJ Point Guard, who has previously landed on Pure Space. He opens up with the majestically speed out sounds of 'Motions' which is awash with lovely chords and far-gazing pads. 'Sex Drive' comes back down to earth with hulking great kick and a steamy, libidinous atmosphere that draws you in deep and 'Hibiscus' then goes for an all out march on a rubbery bassline and popping hits. Sydney native PMA remixes 'Motions' to round out a fresh EP with a sense of menace.

Toxic Funk Vol 4
Cat: BBP 185. Rel: 14 Jan 21
  1. Dance To The Beat (3:13)
  2. Treacherous Love (3:07)
Review: DJ P and the Breakbeat Junkie have been working together as Second Hand Audio for well over a decade, though this contribution to the Toxic Funk series - the fourth in total, fact fans - marks their first joint appearance on Breakbeat Paradise. In keeping with the series' party-starting ethos, A-side 'Dance to the Beat' sees them cannily combine chunky funk breaks with old school hip-hop snippets, vintage soul vocal lifts and jangly instrumental samples from what sounds like a breezy cover version of the Jacksons' 'ABC' (but probably isn't). The smile-inducing fun continues on flipside jam 'Treacherous Love', a slower, hip-hop-tempo number that peppers a head-nodding beat and funk-rock guitars with vocals from an all-star rap number.

Thug Life (140 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: INFILTRATE 06. Rel: 08 Jan 21
  1. Trauma (5:26)
  2. Phobia (5:10)
  3. Thug Life (5:47)
  4. Conflict (4:43)
Review: Macedonian producer Stojche joins the Infiltrate stable for a bout of classy, moody electro with bags of personality hot on the heels of his Urban Chaos LP for Tangible Assets. 'Trauma' builds towards an emotive crescendo, while 'Phobia' twitches in a more dystopian framework that rushes at a formidable tempo. 'Thug Life' keeps things edgy with razor-sharp lead lines that shimmer and shudder around the hard-stepping beat. 'Conflict' rounds things out with a more melancholic mood shaped out by choice chords that drape themselves over the snap of the snare and rapid hats.

  7. Slowdive - "In Mind" (Reload remix - The 147 take) (10:12)
  8. Spiritualized - "Anyway That You Want Me 3" (6:05)
Review: This fantastic 2 x 12" is a collaborative project between Above Board Projects, Offen Music and Les Disques De La Mort that features music selected and sequenced by Vladimir Ivkovic and Ivan Smagghe. The reference point is a time when the pair were working in record shops years ago, listening to both indie and electronic sounds. It takes in the iciest of electronics such as on IF's 'Kisy Loa', dreamy post rave comedowns like Chapterhouse's 'Alpha Phase' and more cub ready grooves like the speckled melodies and glitchy beats of 'Tech 7.' The title suggests this is the start of an ongoing series, which is fantastic news on the evidence of Volume 1.
