Sound System Banger
This Is How It Should Be Done
Review: There’s no denying the power of a Broke release and here Wavewhore provide a stonking bassline reggae-fest in the form of "Sound System Banger". On the flip it's just as heavy but the ingredients include a large pinch of funk. This will rock any dancefloor without exception.

Gargoyle Records: Aliens On Acid
Cat: AGTE 01. Rel: 07 Dec 20
Alienage - "Mindreader" (4:30)
The Madd Scientist - "Funky Dreamz" (6:38)
DJ Who - "Shitty Samples On Acid (On The Rocks)" (5:37)
WhoDonIt - "House Rhythm" (4:59)
Review: Destination Baltimore 1995, Alienage (AKA Tony Pegas and Don Corrieri) indulged in a little lysergic and sonic experimentation. The results were a series of seriously heady club bangers released on Gargoyle and they still sound fat as hell 25 years later. This latest reissue sees Alienage take the lead with necksnap electro breaks, a sultry vox and buckets of sub before Pegas goes solo with his Madd Scientist alias on the b-boy style 'Funky Dreamz'. Flip for two from Who: the slamming TCR-style breaks of 'Shitty Samples On Acid' and an earlier 90s-style, heavily layered, slightly proggy jam 'House Rhythm'. Keep watching the skies.

Baenglund - "Funk Inspector" (5:46)
Aspetuck - "As The Fog Rolls In" (6:01)
Anderson - "Aquabound" (6:45)
Watch Patrol - "Wandering In The Garden" (5:24)
Review: There's an abundance of crafty, ear-snagging gear coming out on Telomere Plastic these days and the steady stream of VA releases are a handy window into some of the freshest operators in the more creative ends of minimal tech house. Baenglund is having a jolly time of it tweaking out the freaky synth riffs on 'Funk Inspector', while Aspetuck creates a teasing, strung-out after hours sound which tips towards electronica on 'As The Fog Rolls In'. Anderson brings a little trance influence to the crooked groove of 'Aquabound', and Watch Patrol softens the edges with an acidic bubblebath on 'Wandering In The Garden'.

General Midi - "Never Gonna Stop The Show" (Autobots Last Bus To Lockwood' Ska mix)
Way Out West - "Apollo" (General Midi's Apollo 8 mix)
Review: General Midi has a strong following and many global fans as one of the most respected breaks artists and producers in the world. Featuring Midi's awesome breaks mix of Way Out West's "Apollo". This mix has been played out extensively in clubs and is released by popular demand. Completing this 12" is another remix of "Never Gonna Stop The Show", this time from Leeds' finest - The Autobots. Leed's finest nu-skool breaks duo, the Autobots, have produced a tear up mix to complete the "Never Gonna Stop The Show" series. The Autobots provide a unique energy and quality in their production and are receiving great coverage and plaudits from the launch of their record label, Broke. Talented vocalist MC Jakes provides vocals on "Never Gonna Stop The Show." He is famed for his work with EZ Rollers and Kosheen in addition to many big DJ's.

Botwin - "Agostic" (6:07)
Solar Sound System - "B16P15" (4:33)
Nairless - "Blind Resistance" (6:11)
Review: Chat Noir is the official imprint of Paris' Chat Noir Distribution, and will be dedicated to all shades of house music. Their inaugural release "This Is A Story" features Jeff The Fool AKA Antoine Bermann, who has been polishing his house music skills for five years now - and it's paid off! His contribution with The Chaud Records partner Wilt is entitled "All I Need" and it rules the A side. This is exactly the kind of emotive and swing-fuelled deep house that we just adore - think E-Wax or Quality Vibe. On the flip we have some good ol' fashioned liquid drum 'n' bass in the spirit of legends like LTJ Bukem and Alex Reece on the roller "B16P15" by Solar Sound System (Aymeric) and closing it out with yet more diverse sounds is the acidified electro journey "Blind Resistance" by local head Nairless (Flying Structures).

Review: Numbering Drifted's fifth release, we have an eye-opening collaborative project from Anna Wall and Corbi. A heady fusion of house and breaks, 'Satellite' is the ultimate energetic pumper that feels impressively true to the late 90s rave sound despite its recent production and pressing date. On the B-side 'Mind Sweeper' takes a darker turn, embellished with glistening high hats and resonant, obscured vocals, this track develops beautifully over the course of its length. A testament to the power of collaboration and creativity in electronic music, this is definitely not one to miss.

Bodyzeit (Borusiade remix) (6:34)
Review: While he might have come to attention exploring Fourth World percussion with Wolf Muller, Niklas Want has since proven himself to be equally happy indulging in full-tilt rave action, and that's exactly what he's up to on this fresh and fruity 12" for Warning. 'Die Glocke' is a rowdy, acid-tweaking breakbeat monster with some playful, braindance chords on top. Fantastic Twins then team up for a sweatier, techno-tooled remix of the track pitched squarely at strobe lit basements. 'Bodyzeit' finds Wandt indulging chunky piano stabs, Detroit synth orchestration and electro swagger, all adding up to a seriously fun kind of club wrecker, which Borusiade then simmers down to a smouldering, after hours roller for the smoke machine crew.

Review: "Window Smasher", the lead track from this Warlock release, takes on the essence of late nineties drum & bass in the vein of DJ Die/Krust and reworks it into a break-step mover. Chopped and filtered breaks combine with a bassline of speaker shaking proportions while an array of sci-fi synths and ghostly FX complete this very full picture. This Rag & Bone release is essential.

Party Piece
Review: Falty DL's Brooklyn-based label Blueberry steps up with a new offering from hitherto unknown producer Luke Warm, whose style of production and name suggests it may be the work of another highly decorated producer called Luke. "Daydreamin'" snakes through Vibert-style sampling fun and games while keeping a suitably whimsical tone to the track through its choice of chords and harmonies. "Brockley Spears" is a more extrovert breakbeat funk roller, working plenty of old-skool hip hop cuts into the mix and making for a tidy party worker. "Instant Vibe" takes some definite influence from Wagon Christ style synth lines, while the funky groove is certainly not far that peppy brand of Ninja Tune beats. "Party Piece" rounds the EP off with some rude bass dominating the mix of loose and limber drum licks.

Review: Nu-funk masters Ghetto Funk Records come through with this formidable 12", featuring four tracks by our boy WBBL. "Check Menina" bleeps and wobbles its way with the help of some feisty snares and party-time vocals; and "Talkin' About My Baby" is just pure old-skool hip-hop goodness. The B side opens with "Fresh Witness" a sampled hodgepodge of videogame melodies, neo-dubstep basslines and fresh beats for ya! "Danger Machine" contains a pure pop sensibility and wouldn't sound out of place on a Rihanna record - enticing, addictive and fun.

Review: If every record in The Weevil Neighbourhood acts as a location or hub within its community, this is the town hall. The nucleus from which all information and threads of consistency spread, it's where it began: 2011 with two robust, technoid dubby fusions that owe as much to Croydon as they do Detroit. The two came as a whole and have remained both in demand and breath-taking ever since. Still sounding contemporary and fresh, this is a timely reissue of a timeless release.

The label arm here clocks up the fourth release from the boss man and it is another seamless fusion of electronic styles from across the ages. 'Bass Tours' kick off in a hurry, with slick bass and punchy retro-electro drum sounds but nice playful leads up top. The Jhobei remix is more crunchy, clipped and tech-house in style while 'Space Wars'manages to be a super fun cut of spinning hi hats and dancing bass. 'Speed Boat' is a classy pumper with a two-step feel and 'How I Feel' closes with a deeper vibe. TIP!

MOY - "Echolab" (Wiles remix) (6:08)
Review: Ritual Poison's Batrachian sublabel has been slipping out the odd 12" here and there with a more melodic flip to the ravey intentions of their main operation. Following Bufobufo and MOY comes Wiles, who offers up a warm and inviting strain of breakbeat with emotional impact at the forefront of the creative mission. 'Too Real Eyez' keeps the drums steady and rolling and folds acid lines into the mix, but the pads swoon with orchestral poise. 'Bientam' gets a little cheekier without losing that plaintive quality in the harmonic composition, while 'Slowrush' diverts towards outright electronica with a haunting quality. Wiles finishes this record up with a remix of MOY's 'Echolab', which turns into a fractured and submerged trip that doesn't shirk its commitment to languid acid and diced up breakbeat.

Rob Amboule - "Mindright" (Harry Wills Toasty mix) (5:12)
Review: Up next for the mental health charity label are 4 tracks dedicated to Mind. The VA pays homage to early 2000s nostalgia - with two Garage/Breaks cuts from Harry Wills & Rob Amboule respectively. The two of them alongside Alec Falconer make up 'Phone Traxx', a highly-regarded UKG outfit. Up first is '6 for 5 and feeling fresh', a track that's already been doing the rounds on dancefloors - idyllic for that peak-time club setting. Following that on the A2 is 'Mindright', which contrasts a noteworthy alternative - something you could expect any time, any place, anywhere. On the flip, is a moody remix from Rob - with a bassline that'll wobble any wall in the country. And last but not least, 'Harry's toasty mix', which more than aptly wraps up a release which is arguably the label's best yet. One not to miss.

Review: Matt Wills' new 'Forget Facts' EP urges us to abandon truth in favour of the newfound post-truth, extreme-self culture. He does so via the simple mode of tech house; each kick drum wallop and acid-analog lick truly does sound like the sound of a big tech company's info-scouring robot stamping us underfoot and licking its lips, delighting in the taste of our data. Holding true to the sound they set out on the Time To Wobble EP last year, they're at it again with Wobble Is Back and the basslines just keep getting fatter. Nasty garage beats, mammoth low end, simple leads - there's nothing else you need to make serious dancefloor heat. The pick of the bunch might well be 'Track 2' here, which has a delicious noirish tint to the DX7 organ sounds to get the dance proper moody.
