Go Go Gadget EP
Cat: DAYBYDAY 009. Rel: 05 Oct 22
Planetary Information (6:16)
Synthesized Happiness (6:31)
Bon Fire (6:22)
Go Go Gadget (5:28)
Review: Wex publishes yet another banger, this time under their German sub-label day by day with a new offering of elegant electronica by Anderson Musik (aka Matt Anderson) who has just finished a brief stint across Europe playing some star-studded setlists in London and Barcelona. 'Go Go Gadget EP' is a chemical compound of acid house and techno, a spacious journey into the retro-futuristic mean streets. Side A features something light and easy in 'Synthesised Happiness', a song best described as sounding how a soda tastes, whilst side B dons a more industrial cloak, turning up the intensity - only slightly - on 'Bon Fire'. Make no mistake, 'Go Go Gadget' is a sugary treat across all four tracks - be prepared for the sourness though.

BBC (7:32)
Choovak (4:29)
Review: It's five up for the CCCP Edits label which deals in serving up nicely reworked jams from house and disco's past. The eponymous and mysterious production team is in fine form here with four more cuts out of Russia that all have Cyrillic names but have been transliterated for English audiences which means '??? ???? ????' becomes 'Moi Drug Tima'. It's a funky cut with house and disco elements over a punchy break. 'Ektoplazma' is rugged electro that races through the stars and 'BBC' is a heavyweight tech-house stomper. 'Choovak' closes with more rough-edged grooves.

Staying On Drugs (2:49)
Review: Irish electro don Cignol is back on Furthur Electronix with more of his top class sonic excursions. He opens this latest EP with 'Glee Arch' which pairs far-sighted chords with celestial pads and broken rhythms. 'Keyss' is a melancholic piece with meaningful chords front and centre and pixelated keys macing around the edges as the woodpecker beats provide the motion. The tenderness of his synths and keys continues on 'Electrob' which has more plaintive melodies paired with bristling beats and then closer 'Staying On Drugs' is a colourful and loose rhythm that feels like it might all fall apart.

Let Me Tell U Sumthin (7:15)
Review: Brooklyn-based Ryan Clover lays down some slamming new tunes here, which is perfect for the label they land on - Eris Drew's always emotive Ecstatic Editions. 'We Love (We Feel)' kicks off with a steamy mix of driving drums and floating synths that comes alive with lush leads. 'My Light, My World' then ups the pace with some quicker, slicker drums and more majestic synth daubs full of soul. 'Here We F***ing Go' is another high-octane cut this time with a more cosmic sense of wonder in the leads as the drums power on and last of all is the throwback sounds of 'Let Me Tell U Sumthin.'

Cafe Can (5:49)
Review: Yes, yes, one thousand times yes. Cryptobitch resurrect track ideas and stems originally formed in 2010, as if only to prove the fact they were well ahead of the curve back then. Packing plenty of IDM nuances, while everything here is very clever indeed it's also a prime example of why the hybrid dance revolution is so infectious and all-encompassing.

Call it drum & bass, call it bassline-infused techno, it's fast but funky, littered with rough riding breakbeats and absolutely inescapable. Futurism on record, you might say. From the acid-inflected jungle style 'DDoNK CrySyS' to the bouncing and jacking 'I Heart Hacking', the lush, opiate waves of synth juxtaposed with the flairs of snare-topped drums on 'Emotet (D Monica), to the compressed, crunching stepper 'Zero Day Demon'. Exceptional stuff that should be in everyone's bag. Or box.

Review: The NOID imprint out of Belgium returns with its second vinyl drop, and this time takes you into some serene realms of breakbeat-driven pleasure court yes of Dave NA. His Altura EP opens with 'Escape', a wide open and airy mix of wispy synths and dusty, floating breaks. 'Elevation' has a more churning rhythm and dubby undercurrent and 'Pulse' (feat Freq444) has a hypnagogic feel, smeared vocal cries and more raw percussive patterns. 'Novox' (feat Freq444) shuts down with the most heavy and moody breakfast of the lot, a certain jungle swagger and plenty of heavy bass.

Review: Breakbeat brederen unite for another sermon at the altar of Dawl who brings the chaos to this new 12", Slice & Dice. The title track kicks off with some mad old school scratching before fresh breaks bounce along and a ragged bassline joins in the fun. 'Let's Go For A Ride is another percussive workout with snares and toms all flapping away at high speed and 'Sonic Boom' keeps up the madness with slick, high-speed beats and corrugated bassline. Last but not least, 'Ready To Go' completes the picture with another fresh collision of breaks and scratching.

Stelu Gamanu (DJ Normal 4 Melange mixx)
Review: Romanians Drago Ilici and Prichindel's Tonomat Records welcome boss man Ilici in his Dilly Bombastik guise for a new EP packed with power across three fresh cuts and one remix from DJ Normal 4. 'Reflo' kicks off with the sort of crunchy drums and breaks that you don't hear all too often out of the more minimal minded Romanians. It's awash with some cosmic melody that brings the vibes then 'Workout' is a party pumper with slinky drum loops and molten synth patterns raining down from above. 'Stelu Gamanu' gets all dark and paranoid with a more edgy breakbeat foundation and DJ Normal 4's Melange mixX is all 90s video game synths and melted neon synths. Great stuff.

Review: Tongue-in-cheek breakbeat badman DJ Absolutely Shit is back with more tunes that show he really isn't. This new EP on Laser is another one primed and ready for maximum dancefloor impact right from the off. First up is 'Close Your Eyes,' a barrage of breaks and jittery percussion with added bleeps and chopped-up vocals. 'My Desire' has old school rap attitude over an electro-tinged rhythm and last of all 'Pee Pee Soaked Heck Hole' is another accomplished rhythmic workout.

Review: As any keen breakbeat heads will know, DJ H's 'The Bass Project' EP came originally back in 1993 and is something of a classic in the genre. It is now getting reissued on nice heavyweight and pink marled vinyl in mad limited quantities but all mastered from a mint vinyl copy. The record infamously suffered from a questionable mixdown and so for this new reissue, the original samples have been re-sourced and layered over the restored files. Apparently, it took some 23 straight man-hours to get the work done - but it has paid off as these sound superb.

With the attention reaching fever pitch, he's unleashed one of the biggest cuts on the LP. Hooking up with the dollar-hungry Aloe Blacc, it's a horn-heaving slice of hip-hop funk that pushes all the right buttons. "Tough Break" is a double-time deal sealer. Review: Dubtil has only very recently launched his own superb new label Infrequent. He did so with a top new EP but has clearly been hard at work in the studio because this outing on Ruere is another doozy. It comes on nice spattered vinyl and has four untitled tunes. The first is a warm one with pads swirling round to bring colour to the tech beats, then the second has a more urgent mission through the cosmos with its wispy pads and tight, twanging bass and prickly drums. On the flip is the more stripped back and minimal roller of track three and then the compelling rubbery rhythms and futuristic pad work of the final cut.

Review: Demon Singles Club's latest addition to their fantastic catalogue comes in the form of a re-issue of Freestylers' 'Ruffneck' EP. Formed in 1996, when DJs and producers Matt Canro and Aston Harvey made the wise decision to join forces, the duo went on to release their now iconic debut album We Rock Hard on legendary imprint, Freskanova. Met with quick critical acclaim, We Rock Hard became the duo's most commercially successful release to date. This latest release, 'Ruffneck', cherry picks four standout tracks from the hit-studded album. 'B-Boy Stance', 'Ruffneck', 'Here We Go', and 'Warning' are a journey through classic big beat and breakbeat electronica, which has remained the band's trademark sound to this day. Also including the original artwork, this is a thoughtful ode to the duo's boundary-pushing work.

Review: There's a reason that Future Sound of London's 1991 debut single, 'Papua New Guinea', is periodically reissued: it's a stone-cold classic that sounds unlike anything else. In its original mix form, the track combines traits borrowed from early breakbeat hardcore (booming bass, house-tempo breakbeats) with saucer-eyed vocal samples, twinkling pianos and sounds more often found in ambient house and chill-out tunes from the period. This remastered, hand-numbered vinyl reissue boasts all of the 1992 remixes (as well as the original mix), including a suitably psychedelic, tribal-tinged Andrew Weatherall revision, the duo's own spaced-out ambient style 'Dub' mix, and a sax-sporting Manchester re-wire courtesy of 808 State's Graham Massey.

Like the inaugural edition in September 2021, the vibes range from off-kilter funk to woozy, weird microhouse as our unknown navigator re-route us through the stranger corners of the broken beat hinterland. Before the pandemic they had releases from scene heavy hitters such as Luciano, (iO) Mulen, Barac and Livio & Roby. For this one they've chosen Miami-based up-and-comer Idana who presents the immersive and multi-layered minimal techno experience of 'Cantan Los Pajaros Modulares' featuring an array of atonal blips and bleeps underpinned by clipped and hypnotic polyrhythms. Review: For their latest deep dive into mid-90s electronic music history, Transmigration has decided to explore the slim but perfectly formed catalogue of Mark Lloyd and Mark Richardson's Isomise project. The pair released two 12s under the alias in 1995, and 'Intersections' features remastered versions of tracks plucked from both. A-side 'The Intersection' is simply superb: a sparse, minimalistic, intergalactic excursion that presents nine minutes of hissing tech-jazz cymbals, broken techno beats, dubby bass, creepy melodic motifs and whispered vocal samples. On side B you'll find wayward, mind-mangling acid techno throb job 'Ketama' and the percussion-heavy, acid-flecked psychedelic techno hedonism of 'Kolo'. In a word: essential!

Review: The Berlin-based brainchild of Byron Yeates, Radiant Love goes from strength to strength, and the label's latest release from Kasra V is no exception. Over the course of this five-track release, full-bodied breaks meet intricate sound design. Striking the perfect balance between dark and light, shifting atmospheres meet satisfyingly glitch-disrupted breakdowns in the opening track, 'Voice Note to Self'. Remixed to perfection thanks to the combined injection of Roza Terenzi and Yeates' signature production styles, Kasra V's more experimental original is reimagined via a pumping, dancefloor ready backdrop. Featuring the playful yet classy inclusion of a growling electric guitar sample, 'Night Prime' moves at a delectable, chugging pace, making the most of the spaciousness it's slowed down pitch affords. Another 10/10 release from this rightly-hailed label.

He has done that mostly on his own Dream Machine label but now lands on the Canadian outlet Pacific Rhythm with three more of his somnambulant sonics. 'Asleep' is all dusty drums and smeared shrouds that encourage the mind to wander, then the Space Ghost remix flips it somewhat into a more potent proposition. Altgr is another fine one that opens with 'Midnight Run', a skittish flurry of breakbeats and snares, grumbling bass and kinetic energy that never lets up. Review: Whether or not Lennie D'Ice's 'We Are I.E' was the tune that inspired the birth of jungle has long been a matter of debate. Regardless, it was certainly highly influential - a booming, sub-heavy breakbeat hardcore anthem that undoubtedly shifted the musical dial on its initial release in 1991. Here the freshly remastered original - sounding weightier and sharper than ever - is joined by a trio of 21st century interpretations. Solo and Blade kick things off with a crisply chopped and pleasingly rolling re-edit before Horsepower Productions brilliantly re-imagine it as a punchy and powerful breakstep smasher. Arguably best of all though is the take from Bristol's Borai, who brilliantly joins the dots between bassline, 4/4 UKG and saucer-eyed turn-of-the-90s house. Let me hear you scream!

Laying somewhere between booty bass, dream pop funk and anarchic punk, all its vocals are quite literally phoned in via an amplified and re-recorded megaphone, while its beats sound nearly as industrial as something produced by Cabaret Voltaire in their heyday. Techno informs on this EP only in its deconstructed, intertextual moments, as on the breakdown before 'Mainstream'. An impressive and different EP from the German group.

Mesak is next up with any electro-techno mix that opens with the thoughtful synths and skittish broken beat patterns of 'Katosi'. 'The Pulse' sounds like something that would have come out of the Jack Smooth HQ in 1991, all rampant pace, heavy kicks and lush pianos. 'Into The Unknown' hits with a Blapps Posse style swagger. 'Feel The Bass' is pure UK hardcore breaks with big Belgian sweeps while 'Memories In Time' brings us to a Subliminal Cuts style euphoric finale. Authentic to the core; keep your finger on this guy!

3AM In The Mobius Strip Club (7:16)
Review: X-Kalay hits its 30th release with a fine new outing drawing on some powerful prog vibes and peak time techno. Opener 'In The Blink Of A Cosmic Eye' is a sleek and electrifying cut and then 'It's Inside U' has an even more driving vibe that tunnels deep. The B-side explores a different but just as potent sound with 'For Love Or Money' slowing the tempo but twisting the mind and '3AM In The Mobius Strip Club' offering downbeat post-club excursions to the stars.

Spinner (bonus track) (5:26)
Review: RNBWS is given the honour of serving up the first-ever release on Dead Beat Records here. It is a fine statement of intent built on robust breakbeats ready for club deployment. 'Slow Moving' is not really, instead it's a turbocharged and bass heavy rhythm with menacing vocal snippets. '54321' has booming kicks and old school energy complete with some Beastie style vox. The b-side brings bendy bass to 'Wake Up', all out and raved-up jungle influences to 'Don't Say A Word' and fat drum bumps to bonus cut 'Spinner.'

Elias Sternin - "Loop Hole" (6:44)
Stonem - "Festichola" (6:38)
Alfalfa - "Rising Down" (5:41)
Two Phase U - "You Are" (6:59)
Review: The correctly titled All Killer No Filler series from the Memphis/Monevideo label is back with a second instalment to back up the fine first outing. This effective various artists release kicks off with Elias Sternin's 'Loop Hole' which is a warm, fleshy techno kicker backed up by Stonem's more lithe and broken beat workout, 'Festichola', which brings some retro 90s synth sounds and plenty of colour. Alfalfa's 'Rising Down' is the flipside opener and is a turbocharged retro-future tech sound with cyborg energy. Last of all is a deeper, slower, heavier sound from Two Phase U with the pensive 'You Are'.

Review: Blimey, crikey, gadzooks, flipping heck. Whatever your choice of exclamation, make sure you execute it with the same energy, creativity and passion as our lads Thugwidow and Bruised Skies. An exciting fusion of kindred energies on Hooversound, a label resonates with every ounce of their ravey charm and authentic ethic, each of these cuts hits hard with sweaty, visceral and often chaotic energy. Highlights include the four to the floor horsepower of 'Historical Absolutism' and the skin-rippling, hair-singeing, heart-popping ravey hype of 'Blimey'. Sheesh! What a powerful slab of wax.

Shy One - "Uncle G" (4:33)
Kieran Jandu - "From My Soul" (6:15)
Review: London wax institution Phonica continue to celebrate their 20th anniversary as a label in deep-digging, highly eclectic style. This fourth sampler continues to hint at a much larger VA album with a wide range of sounds across the techno/jungle axis. Tim Reaper & Comfort Zone get us in the groove with the savage drum funk of 'Subterranean' while Toby Tobias eases down the tempo and takes us to some mystical places on the Balearic-on-Mars funk of 'On My Mind'. Meanwhile on the flip Shy One goes full-on Co-Op / Bugz vibes with its sparse broken beat jazziness while Orphic's Kieran Jandu closes the EP on a bumping early 90s-inspired techno roll-out. Happy anniversary Phonica.

TD Time (5:02)
Start With You (4:05)

Acid Ska (4:44)
Review: The first vinyl release for Acid Boom, Vinyl Fanatiks 90s Acid label, The Acid Masters EP is a 4 track melting pot that has been lost for 30 years before being recently discovered on a tape. After only 3 test presses, the hand-stamped record is now doing a 250 copy limited run. An undeniable collector's piece, the slice of 90s UK acid is a time capsule of a lost scene with aspects of techno, house and breakcore especially on 'TD Time', a personal highlight. The EP has whimsical cuts like 'Start With You' and its Dial Tone beat but doesn't forsake the hallmarks of what made acid so great and counter-culture at the time. This piece is perfect for DJs and collectors alike looking for a hidden gem.

Review: Israel 'Iz' Gravning aka Tone Scientist hails from the West Coast of the United States. He has a room packed with gear - drum machines, samplers, keyboards - and he sure knows how to jam on each piece if this new EP is anything to go by on Basic Moves. 'Discrepancy' kick off with whirring chords and clacking drums, 'Heartache' is suspenseful and airy drum & bass and 'Pyramids On Mars' dubs and dives on drums that flap like sheets of metal in the wind. There is still time for the deep and sludgy 'Things Get Done' and another jungle work out in 'Esoteric Junglist.'

Review: Finnish house kingpin Trevor Deep Jnr always lives up to his name when crafting beats. He does so on a range of crucial labels and here it is an EP of tunes taken from his latest full-length that we're treated to on HPTY. There is a serenity and beauty to opener 'Culpa' that soon casts a spell. 'Come Alive' (feat Niko Marks) then breaks out on prickly broken beats that are brilliant raw as a soulful vocal rings out up top. There is more classy broken beat dub deepness on 'Broken Dreams' which is again defined by a great vocal sample and then Brawther offers one of his textbook stripped-back but bouncy dubs to open the flip side. Two further jams explore misty-eyed house depths in style.

Review: Cult Beat enters the world of vinyl releases with this first offering from Vendi who goes deep and dark into the work of minimal tech. 'Happ' kicks off with flapping drums and airy snares fluttering around one another as ambient drones draw you into the sonic depths. A Suciu remix is textbook minimal house with dry hits and deft designs and 'No Backwards' then picks up the pace with some silvery loops and fresh broken beats making you move in a different way. 'Francua' (with Osvit) is a final reduced groove with distant vocals, static hiss and all manner of organic sounds tripping you out.

Review: Vromm is back on the Over/Shadow label with a new EP of spaced out and cosmic electronic energy. 'Molecular' is a restless mix of breaks and jungle effects, lots of squelchy sonic details and off-grid hits. 'Prism' is a moody and stripped back one with a minimal rhythm but plenty of gliding synth tension in the air then Kid Drama steps up to flip the opening cut into a rolling stomper with big horns. 'Zoom' closes out with more shiny metal surfaces, distant buzz saws and glistening melodies over a loose, jumbled rhythm.

Review: Numbering Drifted's fifth release, we have an eye-opening collaborative project from Anna Wall and Corbi. A heady fusion of house and breaks, 'Satellite' is the ultimate energetic pumper that feels impressively true to the late 90s rave sound despite its recent production and pressing date. On the B-side 'Mind Sweeper' takes a darker turn, embellished with glistening high hats and resonant, obscured vocals, this track develops beautifully over the course of its length. A testament to the power of collaboration and creativity in electronic music, this is definitely not one to miss.

Review: Church co-head Seb Wildblood presents his latest release titled 'Vitara 3000', boasting three masterfully crafted tracks that effortlessly blend a nostalgic sound with broken beats and dreamy melodies. The EP, released via Istanbul-based label Oath, was a result of his new creative space in Los Angeles after moving from London. The high-energy tech house of 'Floor Science' kicks off the EP, while the slinky and hypnotic title track takes listeners on a blissful journey with euphoric vocals. Over on the second side, the euphoric 'Re-location.zip' radiates new beginnings with its elevating chords and snappy breakbeats, fuelled by Wildblood's new studio gear.

Review: youANDme has always been an important cog in the wheel of underground house and techno and his recent PPPPP was another fine project that has also spawned plenty of equally brilliant remixes. This is a second collection of them and it kicks off with the Polish master of perfect loop techno, Head High aka Shed. His bulky, barreling drums and big percussive loops come with plenty of bounce and raved up vocals. After that come Ian Pooley's dub, and Johannes Albert's deep house trip. Sasha, Roger Sanchez and Laurent Garnier have already been banging these so now it's your turn.

Review: Bobo is Mr. Burns's beloved teddy bear but it is unlikely that the same bear is also a dab hand at crafting weighty bass music. Although born in Sweden, this Bobo is now based in Manchester and this is his debut album on Erbium. It's a work that draws on all forms of electronic sound from bass to dubstep as well as ambient, house and electro. The resulting melting pot is a triumph of both dance floor clout and home listening richness. 'Beyond This Realm' is tinged with old school rave energy, 'Rebellion' is eerie and empty bass music and 'Nowhere' is a deep jungle excursion with cuddly bass pillows.

Review: Kicking off his new R&R imprint, LA-born and Berlin-based producer Huerta brings us TV Slang - an LP which exists somewhere between rhythmic and ambient house. For the title track, woozy voice samples drift in and out of focus, existing in a space just outside of reality. 'Stutter Dub' emerges as one of the more dance-geared tracks, yet it's still decorated with the hazy sound design of the release's ambient numbers; its buffed-out environment softening the edges of Huerta's percussion. On the B-side, 'Traces' features dreamily reverberating piano chords embellished with glittering breaks. This is a highly multi-faceted release which promises to take listeners and dancers alike into a beautifully realised soundworld.
