Review: 440 Hz is an alias from French producer Maxime Simon, and he's getting his first solo 12" outing on Ellipsis following prior entries from Tom Jarmey and Aidan Francis. The vibe is trance-inflected deep house with plenty of analogue warmth, with 'Gazoline' making for an instant stand-out thanks to its intricate arrangement and sparkling production. There's some cheeky garage flex sneaking into 'Soul Mirror', in a style which should appeal to fans of Bicep and the like. This is melodically charged contemporary club music with a refined, polished veneer which should comfortably glide between tech house and UKG sets without disturbing the flow.

Stunt Bubble (6:59)
Seasaw (7:29)
Review: Debutants 4D & Krunky create ravey and funked-up minimal techno, taking its cues from early Detroit techno and northern bleep styles. The grooves to be heard on the Humanoid label's are as cute as the label art: from the strobed-out shuffle 'n' roll of 'Oplescot', to the west coast breaks of 'Stunt Bubble' calling to mind the mid '90s sounds of Northern California, and the hyper aware boompty boomp of closer 'Seasaw'.

Old School (5:20)
Sugoi (5:18)
Flash Fight (5:46)
False Religion (6:45)
Review: The second release on the fascinating Mooziken Analog Room label comes not from Detroit-based Iranian Salar Ansari, who delivered the imprint's debut release, but rather British acid house, techno and drum & bass pioneer A Guy Called Gerald. The Mancunian channels the raw, analogue-rich heaviness of his early work throughout the EP, which sees him skip between twisted, cunningly swung, acid-fired heaviness ('Old Skool'), pleasingly metallic blends of electro, clonk and house ('Sugoi'), trippy and hypnotic early morning mysticism (the Berlin-friendly haziness of 'Flash Fight') and chunky, funk-tinged tech-house (the 'is it heavyweight house or light-touch techno' of 'False Religion', where Gerald makes a rare appearance on the mic).

Review: Re-issue of the debut release on the Protechshun label set up by A Guy Called Gerald at the tail end of last year to release his more drum & bass/breakbeat influenced tracks. On original release this was reviewed as bringing to mind his Black Secret Technology era. A Guy Called Gerald has a new album release out on the Laboratory Instinct label "Proto Acid' - The Berlin Sessions" hence this timely re-issue.

Betaville (10:25)
Breakwater (6:59)
Betaville (Timothy J Fairplay remix) (6:43)
Review: Alvaro Cabana's Madrid based imprint (though mainly digitally formatted) has now made the jump to vinyl and boy are we happy. Charmingly named after his hometown (do check his reasoning on his Soundcloud; an interesting read) this label has some real potential, having released some great stuff by up and coming stars Jonathan Kusuma and Squarewave. It is now the turn of Canadian duo Jokers of The Scene who adopt the new alias A Jokers Bizarre for this particular outing. Leading the way is "Betaville", a soulful and emotive classic house jam in the vein of early Chicago/Detroit that clocks in at over 10 minutes. It is pretty epic. "Breakwater" goes for the more slo-mo nu-disco vibe and is just made for drifting, quite hypnotising. The remix by Timothy J Fairplay on the flip, is pretty sick too we must say!

Feel The Rhythm (6:01)
Review: More from the seemingly endless deep archives of Andy Panayi and Alec Stone's long-running A2 production partnership, which first tickled our senses way back in 1997. There's much to admire throughout, with nine-minute A-side cut "Seriously" - an acid-flecked fusion of bustling breakbeats, alien melodies, woozy chords and post-electro electronics - offering a brilliantly club-ready opening. They begin the flipside with what sounds like a turn of the millennium club electro workout (think punchy beats, pulsating analogue bass and moody chords), before adding a little UK garage flavour to their basslines and beats on the deep space bounce of "Feel The Rhythm".

Review: There's messing about on this fresh 12" from Abdul Raeva, a duo made up of Joonas Arro and Steffan Todorovic. They only debuted last year but have since offered up four EPs on four different labels, each with their own vibe. This one has a bulky old-school rave-house sound to 'Vapordisk' and the and dance floor dynamite keeps on coming with 'Acidflex'. It's 3 am business on 'Vela' - a smooth and cruising groover with nice drum loops and tripped-out breaks close out with 'New Horizons'. Super stuff.

The Big Black Slot (6:23)
Review: Portland-based Aaron Carlson is AC$ and this is his third outing on the cult Sakskobing label. Once again he comes at house music from a unique vantage point and mixes up the rawness of Motor City hero Omar-S with the disco dalliances of Metro Area and the deep house of Berlin. His tunes are packed with character as well as funky drum patterns such as on the seductive lo-fi house of 'Patio Protocol'. 'No Jello' is a bumping Chicago house cut with nice frayed edges and 'The Big Black Slot' is cosmic tech house with soulful heart. EPs this fresh and classy don't come along often.

Review: After some great ones by Desert Sound Colony and label co-heads Alec Falconer and Tiago Walter, Ba Dum Tish are back with another curious release by the enigmatic Active Research. It's the sound of the '90s underground on the A side, with the dark drum & bass epic 'Howweryuu' and its Optical / Alex Reece influence, followed by the UK electronica throwback sounds on 'Apexxx North'. On the flip, things take a more abstract turn on the deep and dystopian electro bass journey "Collection Of Noises" followed by the sublime ambient bliss of "Loosen The Moorings".

The Code (7:49)
Review: There sure is an appropriate sense of futurism in these new breakbeats from Ahu. Opener 'Jina' is run through with far-sighted chords that bring to mind the glowing metropolis of Ridley Scott's 'Bladerunner' - it even feels like there's rain falling in the tune as well as subtle celestial vocals and deep, driving bass. and spoken word samples to add that cinematic ambiance. 'Jina (Mahsa)' is soulful machine music - fans of the glorious 69 project of Carl Craig will doubtless dig it - and then 'Nika' rides on a much more rubbery and lovely, lumpy Herbert-esque beat with molten synth melodies and a darker energy. A stylish EP, no doubt.

Hanshoof (4:37)
Review: Cairo based producer Hassan Abou Alam joins the revered ranks of the Banoffee Pies label here as it clocks up the 20th release. It is a punchy techno offering that opens with the roaming, brain-numbing leads of 'Kesibt' (feat SHBL-LBSH). The bass comes heavy, the percussion is raw, the refracted vocal a great hook. 'Fasla' (feat SHBL-LBSH) is hyperdrive double-time techno with wobbly bottom ends, 'Mawkif' further plays with the rules with its hopping hits and driving bass and this more original and inventive of offerings closes with 'Hanshoof', a physical bit of percussive techno funk.

Mojka In Space (5:52)
Review: London record label and party High Praise have put out a series of hotly in demand 12"s that have all sold out in record time. Behind this next one is Russian producer and DJ extraordinaire Lay-Far wo. This artist has landed on the likes of Lumberjacks In Hell, Razor N' Tape, Local Talk, BBE, AtJazz, Tru Thoughts and more, so is a key figure in the soulful, bass laden scene. And he serves all that up and more here with opener 'Pick It Keep It' layering old breakbeats with diving bass. 'Feel The Rhythm Of Your Soul' is a hyper speed drum workout with yelping vocals and then 'Mojika in Space' gets all pixelated and computerised in its melodies.

Review: Destination Baltimore 1995, Alienage (AKA Tony Pegas and Don Corrieri) indulged in a little lysergic and sonic experimentation. The results were a series of seriously heady club bangers released on Gargoyle and they still sound fat as hell 25 years later. This latest reissue sees Alienage take the lead with necksnap electro breaks, a sultry vox and buckets of sub before Pegas goes solo with his Madd Scientist alias on the b-boy style 'Funky Dreamz'. Flip for two from Who: the slamming TCR-style breaks of 'Shitty Samples On Acid' and an earlier 90s-style, heavily layered, slightly proggy jam 'House Rhythm'. Keep watching the skies.

Gather Around (3:23)
Review: Bristolian funkateers and confirmed party-rockers the Allergies have enjoyed a pretty prosperous 2020, with the release of their fourth studio album being followed by a string of singles - a number of which ending up riding high in the NACC US college radio sharts. 'Jumping Off', their final single of the year, is another intensely upbeat, club-ready affair, with regular mic man Andy Cooper (of Ugly Duckling fame) and a crew of female backing vocalists riding a bombastic, party-igniting groove that sits somewhere between hip-hop and deep funk. Flipside 'Gather Around', a bluesy, gospel-tinged stomper full of heady Hammond licks, jazzy bass and infectious verse vocals, is equally as potent.

A five track various artist EP, Voice Notes 002 is a time-honoured memorial for its sister label London Housing Trust, that they shut down a few years ago after 10 releases. Featuring tracks by label boss Tobias who delivers some emotive electro on 'Streets Of Gold', his evil twin Alphonse on the UK flava of 'Rujac', plus introducing Dance with the dub techno deconstruction of 'Amber', Rodney Bennett with the classic Stateside deep house of 'Palm Sunday' and Pyramids of Space with the downbeat IDM journey 'Quantis'.

Duck Tape (Goddard remix)
Review: Alps 2 come to Ad Hoc with a sound that will get a whole lot of listeners feeling misty eyed for good times in well-stocked festival tents. There are unmistakable whiffs of Floating Points and Four Tet in the likes of 'Burnt', which positively emit vitamin D vibes out of the speakers, so infectious is the summery mood contained within those luscious synths. 'Arnda E' has a deeper, knottier quality but it's still a resolutely sweet track, while 'Duck Tape' heads into more fractured territory with a chopped up RnB vocal that calls back to the heyday of future garage. 'Empting' completes this effervescent EP with a more abstract piece that showcases the variety at this breakthrough producer's disposal.

Review: Sexapil duo Amor Satyr and Siu Mata apply the breaks for this powerful new edition for Hardline Sounds. 'Lights Off' sets the scene with a tense set of percussive breaks that roll out like a Suba jam and give us a handy hint at keeping fuel bills low. It's in good company; 'Aquarius' is the ultimate power tool that chugs and cuts in all directions, 'AHE' flips from cosmic halftime into an all-out drum ensemble while 'Psychic Water' takes us deep under the surface of the ocean for a subaquatic rave of our dreams. Bubbling.
