Volume 3: Show Me The Funk Breaks (7" limited to 200 copies)
Cat: BBB 003. Rel: 18 May 20
  1. Show Me The Funk Breaks (instrumental) (3:47)
  2. Harder Breaks (instrumental) (4:08)
Review: The Atlanta based B Boy Breaks series continues with another drop of serious cuts to get beat jugglers, sample diggers and just straight up funk lovers going hog wild over the lashings of drum breaks. First up on the A side there's some widescreen, expansive beatdowns taking place with the massive "Show Me The Funk Breaks" - a fela esque sax screaching ,hammond organ swirling classic you already know from the many times it's been lifted for its treasured sonic ingredients. "Harder Breaks" on the flip is another monumental jam, presented here in instrumental form most recently used for the theme tune of a UK TV show . The evergreen groove is just crying out for someone with the skills to drop some serious turntablism all over this one.

  3. 399 (5:44)
  4. 444 (5:58)
  5. Pullupthetune (3:37)
Review: A couple of months after inaugurating the Outban imprint with a vibrant EP of mind-altering retro-futurism, Bakked returns with a speedy sequel. He first joins the dots between early '90s bleep techno and purist tech-house ("433"), before opting for a deeper and more ghostly take on the same bleeping futurism on "4111". "399" sees him switch tack and offer-up a breakbeat-powered romp laden with warehouse-ready riffs and New Jersey organ licks, while "444" adds sunrise-ready dreaminess to a vintage Detroit techno inspired rhythm track. Arguably best of all though is closing cut "Pullupthetune", a deliciously intergalactic tribute to the more spacey end of mid-'90s drum & bass.

Edits (reissue) (7" Nachpressung)
Cat: MSR 016. Rel: 10 Jul 20
  1. Think (Retro Roland Riso Perfecto rework) (4:27)
  2. Get Out Of My Way (Retro Roland Riso Eterno Regroove) (3:47)
Review: Earlier in the year, Matasuna Records reissued two rare and exceedingly hard to find tracks by Peruvian band Bossa 70. They'll soon be offering up more original cuts from the band's sought-after debut album, but before then they're treating us to two dancefloor-focused re-edits of Bossa 70 classics by American DJ/producer Retro Roland Riso. On the A-side he delivers a DJ-friendly "Perfecto Edit" of Think, a horn-heavy slab of Peruvian funk rich in rubbery beats and hazy bass. Just as cheery and life affirming is his interpretation of "Get Out Of My Way". This is an altogether heavier, faster and more stomping revision, though it's the vibrancy of the psychedelic era Latin funk backing track that really sets the pulse racing.

Halloween EP (heavyweight vinyl 12")
Cat: GRFF 003. Rel: 24 Jun 20
  1. Breakund (6:22)
  2. Intentos Fallidos (6:10)
  3. Buildin (6:08)
  4. Jack O'Lantern (5:55)
Review: When Braik made his debut earlier this year with an EP of retro-futurist breakbeat/tech-house/techno fusions, it was released on the most unlikely of formats: a CD-ROM. We suspect he'll get more praise and plays for this follow-up, which marks his first appearance on wax. There's much to enjoy throughout, from the chiming, acid-flecked deep breaks shuffle of opener "Breakund", to the funky acid bass, psychedelic electronics, creepy melodies and snappy house beats of closer "Jack O'Lantern". Sandwiched in between you'll the bold synth-string stabs, squelchy alien bass and jacking drums of "Intentos Fallidos", as well as the funky, sharply defined 21st century electro shuffle of "Buildin".

  1. Caviar Cordial (5:40)
  2. Free Your Soul (5:11)
  3. Make U Move (6:34)
  4. A Never Ending Dream Of Love (3:27)
Review: When it comes to revivalist rave business and rushing bass music mutations, few are quite as accomplished at delivering the goods as Denham Audio. There's naturally plenty to get the heart pumping on his latest EP, from the Peech Boys sampling deep two-step goodness of "Caviar Cocktail", to the icy, windswept ambient soundsacape that is closing cut "A Never Ending Dream of Love". In between you'll find the pumping, warehouse-ready riff on Moby's "Go" that is "Free Your Soul" - we're not sure if it samples the same Angelo Badalamenti theme, but the chords are certainly very similar - and the sub-heavy breakbeat hardcore rush of "Make You Move", where pitched-up female vocal samples and giddy piano riffs catch the ear.

  1. DJ Normal 4 - "Return Of The Hooligans" (9:55)
  2. Red Axes - "Treacksheni" (6:22)
  3. Hodge - "Signal" (5:39)
Review: REPRESS ALERT: Needs is back with its fifth installment of charity-raising goodness from some seriously quality producers. This time the gauntlet is thrown down by the increasingly prolific DJ Normal 4, who wields some of his signature breakbeats over a cheeky synth that nods to Da Hool for a dark and deadly roller. Israeli duo Red Axes pop up fresh from outings on !K7 and Phantasy Sound for the worldly percussion and mystical atmosphere of "Treacksheni" before Bristol bass-wielding techno titan Hodge finishes the package off with the stunning, dramatic undulations of "Signal," making this a collection of tracks that all feed into the same vein of rhythmically adventurous, moody club music.

Lupita (reissue) (7" Nachpressung) (1 per customer)
Cat: MSR 018. Rel: 10 Jul 20
  1. Lupita (3:36)
  2. Lupita (Bosq rework) (4:24)
Review: Those who love classic Afro-Latin music should already know "Lupita", one of the standout tunes from the sole 1971 album by Belgian composer Nico Gomez (real name Joseph van het Groenewoud) and his Afro-Percussion Inc backing band. That album was reissued a few years back by Mr Bongo; here 'Lupita' is given a rare airing on 7" single by Matasuna. This time round, the deliciously percussive mambo workout - all punchy horns, wild organs and vocal breakdowns - comes backed by a fresh remix courtesy of Bosq. This version is arguably even better, with Bosq wisely choosing to focus on the drums, horns, bass and organs for added dancefloor pleasure.

Review: While breakbeats never really go away, they are also as popular now as they have been for decades. Whether curried deep in a dusty techno track, from t and centre in some naughty jungle or dropped into a rave tune for a wave of nostalgia, the appeal of the break never goes away. Hornsey Hardcore know this and here serve up some face melting tools and brain warping tracks on their own label. They are hundred mile an hour affairs with more energy than the sun and cannot fail to blow up your spot. Their first white label sold out quickly and immediately became overpriced on Discogs so don't sleep on this one.

Review: Space Lab invites you into their astral lair courtesy of some fine beat scientists in Adam Pits, Desert Sound Colony, Dr Baird, Inner Zone and breaka. Pits is the one who takes care of launch with his cosmic melodies and smooth cruising grooves heading out into the great beyond. Desert Sound Colony & Dr Braid offer a more choppy groove tinged with garage bump and alien sound designs, while Breaka gets you in a trance state with his ambient laced loops, and last of all Inner Zone's "Niaaru" is a dreamy, zoned out track equally suited to the warm up, peak time or come down.

Review: Having previously impressed with some deliciously wide-eyed, mind-mangling missives on Salt Mines, Planet Euphorique and Craigie Knowes, Reptant pops up on Kalahari Oyster Cult with some similarly inclining late night workouts. Check first title track "Phasic Reflex", a bustling body-pop across intergalactic electro territory that flits between string-laden dreaminess and weighty, acid-fired wonkiness, before admiring the tighter electro bounce of the Egyptian Lover-ish "MS Plenty". Over on side B it's all about "A Realist's Realistic Reality", where Reptant's foreboding, spacey and Dexter-ish original version comes accompanied by a wonderfully melodious, breakbeat-driven electronica re-make by Roza Terenzi.

  9. My Reality Cheque Bounced (feat DJ Zozi) (6:31)
Review: Over the last couple of years, Aussie Katie Campbell has delivered a string of well-regarded EPs and 12" singles steeped in retro-futurist flavours. Here she delivers here most expansive release to date, a double-pack that officially counts as the Roza Terenzi debut album. Her usual aural trademarks are all present - think deep bass, dreamy synths, fluttering electronic melodies, euphoric melodic motifs, breakbeats and bustling beats that are anything but conformist - alongside nods towards turn-of-the-90s techno, weighty electro rhythms and snappy, ghetto-house inspired workouts. It's undeniably a Roza Terenzi release, and there's enough variety - coupled with smart sequencing - to make it hang together as an album. Oh, and bass-heavy, Bleep-inspired closer "My Reality Cheque Bounced" is one of the best things Campbell has released to date.

Off
Cat: OFF 001. Rel: 22 Jun 20
  1. Alice Donut (2:48)
  2. Nino Fourrure (3:25)
Review: There's plenty to set the pulse racing on this inaugural, limited-edition seven-inch single from Off Records. Check first Parisian producer Son of a Pitch's A-side spin "Alice Donut", a hot-to-trot re-edit of what sounds like a late 1960s French fusion of lounge music, Phil Spector wall-of-sound pop and Hammond-heavy funk. It's undeniably quirky, but thanks to the presence of ear-catching organ lines and crunchy breakbeats, also a bona fide dancefloor hit. Over on the flip, French Zulu Nation member DJ Suspect turns his attention to a tongue-in-cheek Gallic Mod-era number, fattening up the breakbeats and emphasizing the killer horn lines and swinging sixties vibes.
