Review: A British hard-blues band known for releasing just one album on Decca way back in 1969, Sam Apple Pie had never again shown any promise of sharing more material with the world - until now. Second Helping is an unreleased album that they recorded in 1970, quite possibly as a follow-up to their debut. Miraculously, the album was taken from an acetate that was recently found, but which lacked any song titles or credits. Influences from Fleetwood Mac, Edgar Broughton Band and Free collide into an honest bluesy, boogie-rocky, instrumentally focused sound, with impassioned performances and trilling interludes making for an LP that feels higher-concept than most in the genre.
