Review: Munich's mighty Ilian Tape is the next label on which Laksa impresses with this new Voices 12". First out of the blocks is the sound system bothering 'Tech Steppas' with its wobbly low end and percolating dark drum funk. 'LEO' brings a more brutal broken beat with elastic bass that makes you move in many different directions at once while 'The Art Of Slip' is a pounding mix of thudding kicks, tripped-out vocal loops and moody synth menace that never lets up. Last but not least is 'Enjoyment' which rides on a thrilling and airy half-speed percussive rhythm that has plenty of height to it. Another inventive EP from the Ilian crew.

Review: It is no mean feat to emerge with our own unquietly original sound but that's just what Lauren Bush aka RE:NI did with twisted, tightly interwoven but languid rhythms. Now Bush is back with a debut EP on Timedance that fuses techno, bass and something else into a potent quartet of high-class dancefloor rhythms. 'BURSTTRAP' rocks back and forth on its heels with chattery percussion, 'Blame Is The Name Of The Game' layers up skittish fragments of percussion and rhythm into a scattered groove that has great big hits up top and sounds like it exists in an empty old factory. 'Below Sanpaku' is even more decaying and depraved and 'BeautySick' shuts down with another dubbed-out and mesmerising fusion of sounds.

Review: NX12X is the first in a new series of experimental records from this label and the artists given the keys for the inaugural release are Goldsmiths student and modular synth maestro Sam Hostettler and electronic innovator La Leif who tackle a pair of tracks each. Hostettler's sounds are the moody, heavy ambient atmospheres of 'Pointalims' and the more light and airy li-fi soundscapes of 'Opalescence.' La Leif offers broken beats with a skeletal feel and a burial-style synth aesthetic on 'Kyoto' and then crunchy breaks and fizzing, distorted synth malfunctions of 'Kimochi.'

Review: Techno arriving on 7" is not an all too common sight, but why not? This release from the fledgling Dispari out of Germany suggests it works well. Cloud Management and Gavsborg take one side each, starting with the former. Their 'Tempentary Dance' pairs thudding and broken kick drum patterns with dreamy and rising synth sequences and spoken words. It's brilliantly beguiling. The flip then finds Gavsborg offering 'Did Not Make This For Jah_9' (feat Shanique Marie) which is dark and moody, dubbed out and dystopian deep techno.

Review: DJ Crisps is starting to make some handy garage moves after a couple of various artists' appearances and a fine EP on Time Is Now Germany in July. Now they link up with Oldboy who appeared on Burnski's other label Vivid back in 2022. As you should expect these are four hardcore and rudely garage cuts with plenty of swagger, naughty samples and bass-face potential. 'On My Way' is the standout with its shuffling one-two drum punch, distant police sirens and warped basslines underneath a timeless and irresistible female vocal full of soul. A summer scorcher for sure alongside three more very useful weapons.

Review: Make Your Own Meaning continues to convey its unique techno message with a new statement of intent from label head Lurka. The artist has been busy of late and continues to be on a roll with another fascinating four tracker that genuinely serves up some original sounds and rhythms. 'Trip' gets things underway with organic percussive patterns stacked up over drilling bass to make for a prickly groove. 'Airlock' is similar but darker and heavier and 'Sick Flips' keeps the nimble feel going with dancing perc, rigid synths and scratchy sound effects all coalescing over broken drum patterns. Last of all is another dense, busy and multi-layered melange of tiny percussive sounds, synths and clipped rhythms that will make any floor move.

This is an EP of stylish and subversive techno that is meticulously designed and all named after plants. Review: Prolific under a variety of different aliases between them, Italian artists Big Hands and Banishsh continue to push the limits on the latter's new SM000 imprint. Sitting right on the edge of a variety of genre hinterlands, there are notes of jungle, dub, techno and IDM running throughout. Big Hands' 'SWGGN' vibes with the most upbeat feeling and flow while Banishsh's 'OP' version hits with much more of a dancehall bounce and sense of bass tension and the '55' deconstructs and dubs things out even more. Review: Bristol's Hodge is one of those producers with a signature style no matter the genre he makes. He's an adept studio craftsman who designs sounds in a way few others do and he shows that again here with this fresh 12" on the mighty Timedance. 'Voice Crash' opens up with clanking great hits over minimalist beat frameworks that are always on the move, and you will be too. '151' is a more manic and dense arrangement with malfunctioning loops, knackered synth mutations and whirring effects all making for something fairly mind-blowing. Last of all is 'Fussyhead', a percolating and potent rhythm underpinned with lashings of UK bass.

Review: The Unknown-Untitled gang is back with an eighth mysterious outing from the self-titled production outfit behind the label, whoever that may be. Again this is a limited edition 12" and again it is pure fire. 'rack 1' sounds like techno from a distinctly UK perspective, if you ask us - the bass drills deep, the synths fizz like static and chopped up vocal fragments bring the hype. The rest of the EP is a varied one that takes in clanging loop pieces, industrial tinged workouts like 'Track 3' and futuristic rhythmic explorations such as the tense, textured sounds of 'Track 5'.

Review: The moment 'Lip Locked' throws its hulking, lunging, jacking kick drum at you it's pretty clear this understandably rather hyped collaboration between two dons of crossover tones is going to be worth every penny. Then the hypnotic monotoned hook lands, adding a definite air of dance floor cheekiness, and the deal is well and truly sealed. The fact you can flip it to find 'Just Look At The Rain' is really just a bonus, then. But what a bonus it is. A far more staccato, broken affair that takes the tempo up a notch, and uses its breakdowns for purely percussive tension-building purposes, it's a dream of a 'UK club' tune, for want of a better phrase, calling on elements of hardcore breaks, dubstep, and garage-techno to offer something that occupies that all-too-elusive place between seriousness, fun, noise and energy.

Up on the A-side is 'Void 93,' a terse mix of busted breaks, heavy bass hits and jungle energy that's run through with dark vocal snippets. Review: It almost seems redundant, writing something about the latest fabric Originals release. If you could think of a more enticing double-header for fans of bass, Leftfield techno, and UK-hued alternative electronic music then we want to hear it, with both producers here moving well beyond cult status and into the world of households names in homes well beyond their original audiences. And yet, remarkably, neither have strayed too far from where they initially set stalls. Hyperdub boss Kode 9 proves this first, with the sightly dizzying 'Infirmary'. Born from a combination of loose, open, galloping UKF and organic techno, with its foundations rooted in footwork, it's a bounding high-energy body mover that refuses to quit. Flip it and find Burial edging closer to 'dance music' than many might be used to, although it's a deep, moody interpretation packed with the spellbinding vocal flourishes of a mutant garage and suppressed, fidgety drums so subtle they're close to background noise.

Review: A melting pot of UK garage, house and bass, DJ Swagger's latest release on Berlin-based label, 777, is a fascinating exploration in structure and chaos. Opening track, 'Thanks Felix', moves at lightspeed - a thrilling race through a gritty arrangement of blunted kicks, shifting in and out of focus, moving between order and disorder. 'Fingerclut' emerges with an instantly more house-facing feel - a satisfyingly hypnotic groove spirals in a circle motion, featuring a cyclonic gathering of subtle flecks of percussive variation over the course of the track. Offering a spliced, glitched-out take on contemporary bass, 'Final Bout' journeys through moments of airy weightlessness before being thrown back into the growling, driving bass section of the track. The perfect tension builder, 'Full Cycle', is an ingenious tease of a track, skillfully building up to, you guessed it, even more build.

He takes care of the B-side of the second release from Worldwide Unlimited. 'I'm Tired' is sleepy and drowsy dub with wispy synths that reflect light like fireflies as the ever-tumbling rhythms take you down deep. 'Uwu' has a tropical feel with layers of watery droplets and jungle sounds, humidity and percussion. Nick Leon's offerings are just as lean and inviting, with a crisp, tech-edged opener then a more broken beat on 'Love Potion.'

Review: The Hessle Audio label celebrated a big birthday in style recently and rightly so. It has long been a pioneering outlet for always cutting-edge electronic sounds loosely couched in bass music but often involving so much more. This latest comes from Toumba who made a fine outing at the end of last year and starts 2023 on just as solid a footing. 'Istibtan' is stripped-back body music with a smattering of tin-pot percussion and dark bass. Flexing fully across four tracks, her signature fusion of breakbeat, bass, jungle and club hits the spot in true Bristol brutalist fashion. 'Look Mum No Hands' eases us in with a dreamy, spacious halftime trip while the recent single 'Same Same' continues to keep the subtle sense of chill with its floating chords and slinky percussion. Review: Bumping bass house blends right here as Facta links up with Lurka's Fringe White for a wobbly slab of jacking fun that's reminiscent of the early Switch and Jesse Rose material from around 20 years ago. For a little more esoteric mischief then head for either of the two Dorisburg remixes. The main one wriggles and writhes with an ice cold electro spirit while Dorisburg's 'beats remix' proceeds to space things out even more, adding even more intensity and drama. Feeling these type of beats? 'Ditto'.

Review: Koma returns to the scene of the crime, finishing off what he started in 2018. First there was ENV 018 with massive tracks like 'Uncle Sullivan' and 'Moonlight'. Then came some very cheeky unauthorised versions in 2020 which most definitely weren't on Encrypted (the release was even called NOT-ENV to prove this!) Now he returns with ENV 018.1, another stately slab of wax comprising three smouldering 140 jams... The purring 'Dialtone', the militant march and thundering bumps of 'Flick' and finally the woozy swagger and eerie tension of 'Untitled'. Each one as heavy as the last, rumour has it he'll be back with an album. We can't wait.

Review: Bristol basshead Lamont has been a mainstay of this scene for years thanks to involvement with everyone from Swamp 81 to Zed Bias, with whom he curated the Durkle Disco label. He returns here to the Version label for the first time since 2020 with four more twisted and inventive cuts of bass music. 'Cut It Back' is all eerie synth lines and stuttering bottom ends with killer snares up top. 'I Wasn't Even There' is a staggering, swaggering cut with claps and snares knocking into one another over well-swung bass and 'It's What It Izzz' is another sparse and late-night wander home through an urban landscape. 'Tailbone' closes with spoken word monologues and cosmic chords.

Review: Scottish label Redstone Press carries on its scintillating run of recent form with Pseudopolis stepping up to tenderise the dance floor. The expressive 'High For Life' kicks off with the sort of bulky beats that demand a physical reaction while 'Euphoria Inc' is a deeper rhythm with blasts of bass, steely metallic drum sounds and broken, prickly beats. 'Haze Runner' is a rinsing jungle work out that will get the gun fingers out and closer 'High For Life' (Bassbin 23 remix) then sips down into another earth quaking rhythm with dusty breaks and lively bass work all tapping into a rich history of UK music.

Review: Simone Menomale debuts on presumably his own new label SM000 with music that is as sparse and abstract as the imprint's own name. These three tracks are eerie and empty rhythm explorations that come built on skittish bass frequencies with icy percussion. Sometimes the beats are broken with glassy textures, at others they are punchy and floating. This is music for the small hours, for cosy back rooms, for heady crowds who like to do lots of their own work with minimal input. It's a great start to a vital new label.

Review: EBB hails from New Zealand and has been popping up on our radar since around 2019. He has a broad and stylish take on bass music that looks to all corners for its inspiration. Opener 'Fallen' is an unrelenting steamroller with hits peeling off the fleshy, bubbly, heavy groove. 'Lazer Riddim' gets more twitchy with blasts of bass and shooting synths and then 'Time Warp Tonic' gets well rave-up with its cantering drums and visceral synth patterns. Last of all is the double time tech head-wrecker that is 'Blue Energy Drink (feat JD Loom).'
