Review: Will Sessions' The Elmatic Instrumentals is a slick fusion of funk and instrumental big beat, centring on a series of cover versions made for the rapper Elzhi's 'Elmatic' project in 2011 - an original re-rendition of rapper Nas' classic album 'Illmatic'. The precision LP follows Sessions' live funk and jazz performances and collaborations with artists like Black Milk, Danny Brown and Mayer Hawthorne, resulting in something of a creative peak. Each track was recreated from scratch with producer Sam Beaubien, capturing the essence of Illmatic's beats, but with a live band twist.
