Lanzarote (acappella)

Lanzarote (Krokstapella)
Review: Last year Todd Terje dropped the magnificent "Inspector Norse", a track that would quickly become ubiquitous on dancefloors of all descriptions. This hook-up with old pal Lindstrom is equally big; taking the best of both producers' work - Terje's bouncing, dub-influenced drums and cascading melodies, Lindstrom's angular appregiated basslines and grandiose chords - "Lanzarote" incessantly builds towards an exhausted climax. Throw in some fantastically tongue-in-cheek vocals name-checking holiday destinations, and you've got a hedonistic anthem. On the remix, Diskjokke takes it further towards Eurodisco territory whilst retaining the original's endearing bounce.

Review: ***B-STOCK: Creasing to corners of outer sleeve, product unopened & in excellent condition***

He's taken his time, but finally Norwegian nu-disco legend Todd Terje has delivered a debut album befitting his immense talents. While there are plenty of examples of his vibrant, synth-heavy dancefloor style on It's Album Time - see "Delorean Dynamite", "Inspector Norse", "Strandbar" and the Lindstrom-ish grandiosity of "Oh Joy" - what really makes it such an essential set are the curious turns and oddball moments. Samba, jazz and easy listening get the Terje treatment on "Alfonso Muskedunder", "Leisure Suit Proben" and "Svensk Sas", while there's a welcome dose of wide-eyed Balearica on the tweaked "Swing Star" (one of a string of previously released cuts on the album). Most interesting of all, though, is "John & Mary", a woozy, Roxy Music style cover of a Robert Palmer classic featuring the effervescent Bryan Ferry.

It's The Arps EP

Inspector Norse (6:40)
Myggsommer (3:23)
Swing Star (part 1) (4:19)
Swing Star (part 2) (6:44)
Review: Given that Todd Terje's first original material in some five years resulted in one of last year's highlights with the Running Back released Ragysh, it's natural he would want to leave some space before following up. The first of a series of EPs crafted from using one bit of vintage gear in particular, It's The Arps sees Terje dabble with the intricacies of the Arp 2600 analogue synthesizer as well as pay homage to his favourite Monty Python sketch. This is just as nerdy as you'd expect from a man who recently launched a website with the specific intention of exploring the obsessive studio nature of his contemporaries. The aforementioned "Inspector Norse" is an obvious highlight here, slowly unfurling gorgeous layers of playful synthesis that grapple the simplistic drums with flirtatious delight. Naturally for someone who spends most weekends of the year in a nightclub, Terje demonstrates a real prowess for building up the track, teasing your senses once before unleashing the mid point monstrous moment. It makes for another signature track from Terje which is likely to engender a rapturous reception for many years to come. Alongside it, "Myggsommer" provides a brief, twee interlude into oddball sci fi soundscapes which again prove to highlight the Arp 2600's capacity for inventive and idiosyncratic sounds. From here Terje unveils a two part skywards saunter through "Swing Star" showcasing a more dextrous manipulation of the Arp 2600's melodies across the markedly more rhythmic upbeat first part and expansive luxurious cosmic subsequent endeavour. Whilst "Inspector Norse" is guaranteed to be the one track from this release you will hear in the international discotheques, the remainder of It's The Arps serves as a excellent reminder of Terje's ever growing talent as a producer.

Review: ** Running Back Repress for the Terje Fans **Terje Olsen doesn't release many records, but when he does they tend to be pretty special. This surprise EP for Running Back is his only his fifth original single in seven years, but it's arguably his best yet. "Ragysh" is devilishly simple, a naggingly hypnotic house/ electronic disco head-nodder that builds to a gasping climax of chic, intergalactic melodies. It's partnered by "Bonysh", a dubwise beats track that ekes maximum thrills from little more than ever-changing percussion. B-side "Snooze For Love" - available in dancefloor and downtempo versions - continues the stargazing theme, offering up an uber-Balearic mix of bleep melodies, dozy chords and sleepwalking percussion.

Jungelknugen (remixes)

Deep House
Jungelknugen (Four Tet remix) (7:49)
Jungelknugen (Prins Thomas remix) (8:59)
Review: Todd Terje has yet to release the original version of "Jungelknugen", but he's decided to release these remixes anyway. It makes sense: as you'd expect, both are top notch. Four Tet handles the A-side, delivering a version rich in Italian dream house style pianos, swirling synthesizer chords, jazzy musical touches, analogue bass and the kind of live-and-loose beats that the veteran prodicer has become famous for. It even boasts a rush-inducing breakdown for those 6AM "Scandolearic" moments. On the flip, Terje's old pal Prins Thomas takes the track in a different direction, fusing Terje's piano motifs with bleep style sub-bass, psychedelic electronics, and some swinging disco beats of his own.

Inspector Norse (Justin Van Der Volgen mix) (10:16)
Strandbar (Justin Van Der Volgen mix) (9:15)
Review: What's this? The criminally under rated Justin Vandervolgen reworking two of Toddney Terje's finest productions? Yes please, thank you very much Justin. Both "Inspector Norse" and "Strandbar" are naturally near perfect examples of modern Scandolearica, with the former ubiquitous enough to cause mass humalongs at festivals when Terje has been playing live recently. Vandervolgen is a fine person to add a different edge to proceedings however, as his series of Try To Find Me edits for Golf Channel has proved time and time again. In his hands "Inspector Norse" remains as star gazing as ever, but is more stripped back and will probably cause bedlam on the floor when people clock what's playing. Much the same can be said about his heavily percussive take on "Strandbar" too.

Q (12:00)
Review: A firm favourite throughout the summer, "Spiral" is Terje at his most 'big room'. Driven by crisp synths and a dynamic chord progression, there's an overwhelming sense of progressiveness throughout that isn't dissimilar to that of Eric Prydz. "Q" continues this mainstage motif with a bold, loopy construction which builds and builds without ever being too over the top. Next level business.

Inspector Norse (Pepe Bradock remix) (6:27)
Swing Star (Pepe Bradock remix) (4:48)
Strandbar (Joakim remix) (6:12)
Strandbar (Eric Duncan remix) (6:42)
Review: If you wanted someone to affectionately mangle "Inspector Norse", Todd Terje's now ubiquitous summer anthem, you would probably pick Pepe Bradock. The Frenchman predictably turns in a fine version that re-casts the Norwegian's cheery original as swinging, eccentric chunk of oddball house. It's a fine effort, and while it does contain those famous synthesizer lines, they're pleasingly twisted and work wonderfully with Bradock's typically shuffling drums. He remixes "Swing Star", too, turning the album track into a weird and wild deep house bumper. Elsewhere, there are contrasting versions of "Strandbar"; a cheery, suitably bouncy re-make from Joakim, and a rather colossal, soaring interpretation from Eric 'Dunks' Duncan.

Alfonso Muskedunder (Mungolian vs Tangoterje dub) (4:52)
Review: Having previously commissioned remixes of a range of It's Album Time LP tracks, Todd Terje has decided to hand over one of that set's most idiosyncratic tracks - the madcap, easy listening goes dancefloor jazz freakery of "Alfonso Muskedunder" - to a surprisingly eclectic selection of producers. While you would expect old pals Mungolian Jetset to embrace the madness - which they do with a sublime latin-tinged easy listening version, and an even better echo-laden dub, the latter in cahoots with Terje himself - you couldn't say the same for deep house and techno veteran Deetron. That said, his version is excellent, re-imagining Terje's original as a thrillingly breezy Balearic house jam. Bullion's pitched-down, hip-hop influenced version completes a superb package.

Leisure Suit Preben (I Cube remix)
Preben Goes To Acapulco (Prins Thomas remix)
Review: In some ways, the "Preben" suite of tracks from Terje's It's Album Time LP is a strange choice for remixing. That said, the two original tracks both featured plenty of live instrumentation and spiraling synth solos amongst their nu disco-meets-easy listening and library jazz-funk grooves, making them attractive to remixers. As a result, these two reworks are unsurprisingly different to the source material. Parisian veteran I:Cube does a superb job on "Leisure Suit Preben", turning the tongue-in-cheek original into a string-drenched chunk of immersive Balearic house. Terje's old pal Prins Thomas sticks closer to the original vibe of "Preben Goes To Acapulco", turning in a breezy chunk of Arp-laden jazz-funk blessed with his usual organic, bass-heavy grooves.

Oh Joy-lude
Review: Given that it was one of the most jaw-dropping dancefloor moments on Todd Terje's recent debut album, it's perhaps little surprise to find "Delorean Dynamite" dropping as a single. The version here (the "Disco Mix", no less), is a surging, shimmering chunk of Back To The Future-inspired synth disco - all undulating Italo-style appregios, bold chords, catchy guitar hooks and rush-inducing builds. In all honesty, it sounds like another Terje anthem in waiting. The included drum track - "Delorean Drums" - is inspired, too, and re-casts the strobelight original as a carnival-friendly percussive assault. There's more grandiose, wide-eyed Scandolearic disco in the shape of "Oh Joy (Disco Mix)", which sounds like vintage Lindstrom after a fist full of happy pills. Put simply, it's stunning.

Todd Terje - "Snooze 4 Love" (version)
Son Of Sam - "Nature Makes A Mistake" (Jack Plug Supernatural dub)
Review: 2011 was a pretty special year for Gerd Janson's imperious Running Back imprint and they open proceedings on the next annual chapter with two cuts from their digital archives on this killer Digital Dubplates 10". The A Side houses an absolutely sublime version of Todd Terje's "Snooze 4 Luv" from the magnificent Ragysh EP, further exposing the sumptuous horizontal qualities with aplomb. Providing some nice contrast is an equally refined remix of Son of Sam's "Nature Makes A Mistake" from Jack Plug. The reissue of this 1984 industrially charged oddity was our favourite Running Back release of last year, and the chance to grasp a physical copy of Plug's effort (which is superior to the more highly lauded Ame remix) should not be passed up. Running Back also win the prize for first great runout groove inscriptions of 2012.

Disco Circus (Dan Tyler remix) (9:29)
Firecracker (Dan Tyler bonus beats) (6:02)
Review: By anyone's standards, Todd Terje & The Olsens' recent The Big Cover-Up - in which the Norwegian producer and his regular live band delivered idiosyncratic cover versions of stone cold classics - was something of a triumph. That EP also included remixes from various music industry pals, including Prins Thomas and Idjut Boy Dan Tyler. This EP boasts two more revisions from the latter, including a deliciously percussive, dubbed-out and floor-friendly "bonus beats" version of his "Firecracker" remix, the full version of which was featured on The Big Cover-Up. Better still is Tyler's rework of Terje and company's version of Martin Circus' camp disco classic "Disco Circus". Dubby, spaced-out, percussive and blessed with those oh-so-familiar backing vocals, it's an undeniable dub disco delight.

Review: Todd Terje & The Olsens come correct with their first recorded material after an extended bout of them treating festival audiences to some of the Norwegian's best-loved material, not to mention some killer cover versions. Indeed it's the latter, oft-derided method of recording that forms the basis of this delightfully-presented double pack (we love a good Big Trouble In Little China reference) as Terje and the group rip through renditions of some disco standards from Martin Circus, YMO, Vangelis and more. Given Terje's lengthy range of official and under-the-counter edits, news of this new project makes perfect sense to us. In addition to these cover versions, Olsen have also commissioned some remixes with arch Terje colluder Prins Thomas involved along with Comeme artist Daniel Maloso.
