Review: It's remarkable to think Anxiety Art is The Reds, Pinks and Purples' debut album. Released in 2019 on the excellent Spanish label Pretty Olivia, just 200 copies were available at the time, and they did exactly what 200 copies of anything tend to do. Cue pandemic style panic buying as fans, collectors, and observant bandwagon riders snapped up every last one.

Finally then, someone has seen sense to make this triumph of kitchen pop-rock more readily accessible, and we couldn't be happier. Alongside a delightful, slight, and wholly life-affirming playlist of 14 tracks that have probably forgotten more about guitar melodies than most will ever hope to learn, you also get an expanded collections of photographs of the Inner Richmond district of San Francisco, which partly inspired this record.

Review: The gold standard Big Crown label excels at heartbreaking Americana, blue-eyed soul and downbeat pop. A 116th release of such sounds now comes from Holy Hive who are back with a new bunch of songs after their 2020 debut album, Float Back To You, won widespread acclaim. Their trademark folk-soul sound is in full view once more here with falsetto vocals bring real heart aching over slow, downbeat drums. It's beautiful stuff that takes the form of two only subtle different singles here. Both wallow in their own sadness and delicateness but leaving a lasting impression.

Review: Glenn Donaldson's latest album as the Reds, Pinks & Purples, Uncommon Weather, may nominally simultaneously be an "elusive portrait of San Francisco and a sef-portrait of the songwriter" (as the accompanying press release notes), but it largely sounds like the kind of baggy guitar-pop that was once the preserve of Manchester bands such as the Smiths and the Stone Roses. That means lots of glistening, effects-laden guitar sounds, strong choruses, occasional sweeping synth sounds and DIY grooves that let the other musical elements - and his vocals - take centre stage. It's a hugely attractive set all told that sounds like it was frozen in time sometime around 1989. To our ears, that's no bad thing.
