Review: The Sound In Color label dip their toes in the future soul pool with this single from producer GB’s upcoming debut album. GB, whose sound is similar to Dabrye in style and DJ Krush in mood, provides a minimal, filtered backdrop for Spacek front man, Steve Spacek, to float above. The b-side features a remix by the Sa-Ra Creative Partners who have been working with everybody from Common and Pharaoh to Dre and N.E.R.D. As a good contrast to the airy a-side, their mix bounces the track in a more swinging direction, complete with ragtime brass and piano arrangement plus a great walking bass line.

Review:  The latest single from Mukatsuku is from Australian DJ/Producer Katalyst who was one of the winners at Australian Dance Music Awards in 2002. 'How Bout Us' originally came out as part of the album ''What's Happening ' on Australian label Invada in 2007 before receiving a global CD only release for BBE a year later in 2008 but up till now has never been out as a single in it's own right. The track 'How Bout Us' features vocalist Steve Spacek with an exclusive unreleased instrumental version on the flipside. Killer production with massive string lines and charismatic vocals to ignite your dancefloor. As played by Coldcut,Mr Thing, Skeme Richards , Marcel Vogel,The Herbaliser,DJ Prestige, Boca 45, Smoov,Andre One Of A Kind, DJ Gilla (First Word Records) , Huw72, Dom Servini (Wah Wah 45's), Ben Gibson, etc

Review: Katalyst and Spacek are back together with their Space Invadas project, coming through with their second album to date, Wild World, and their only album in the last 8 years. Back on Australia's Invada label, it's clear that the pair had a real thirst to get back into the studio and construct some of their well-known beat science again, with the opener "Welcome" sounding so polished and smooth alongside Natalie Slade's vocals. 'Broken beat' doesn't really do their style any justice seeing as there's a bit of everything on here but, on the other hand, that is the best way to describe this collection of dance-centric tunes made up largely of...broken beats. There are plenty of diverse sounds and influences on here, too, with a bit of salsa coming through on "Don't Ever Look Back", some futuristic neo-hip-hop on the likes of "Satellite", and even some soothing soul on "Now That I Know". Most of this batboy comes complete with vocal swagger - and that's one of its strongest elements. Recommended.

Review: There's been a fair amount of hype in soul circles regarding Space Invadas, the modern soul project from scene veteran Steve Spacek and Australian producer Katalyst. Listening to Soul:Fi, their debut set, it's easy to see why! It effortlessly blends a myriad of influences - from West Coast hip-hop and noughties funk to classic 60s soul, reggae, jazz-funk and even string-laden disco - on a slick, sun-drenched journey. Like previous single "Done It Again" (one of numerous highlights here), Soul:Fi is never less than triumphantly joyous. If you're looking for outstanding vocals, great songs, fat beats and impeccable production, you can't go wrong.

  1. Done It Again (3:37)
  2. Listen (2:53)
Review: Alongside the drop of their second album, Wild World, Spacek and Katalyst have just gone a reissued their 7" single from 2010, Done It Again. This little batboy was sick as f*** when it first landed, but it was perhaps ahead of its time, released in a moment when minimal and tech-house were reigning supreme on the dancefloors. However, 2018 seems like the perfect moment to release this broken beat monster, with the title tune going all funky and boogie-fiendly and the second, "Listen", laying down some utter truth thanks to a fat groove built with brutal bass, deep echoes, and some pretty far-out vocals. Highly recommended..!

Review: It took Steve Spacek almost 13 years to deliver a follow-up to his acclaimed 2005 debut album "Space Shift". Happily, he's not made us wait nearly as long for "Houses", his sequel to 2018's brilliant, Eglo-released "Natural Sci-Fi". More importantly, it's arguably even better than its predecessor, with Spacek combining his weary, soft-focus and effortlessly soulful vocals with a rich, warm and woozy musical palette full of echoing Rhodes electric piano chords, sci-fi electronics, sub-heavy basslines and grooves that largely - but not universally - tend towards the deeper and more experimental end of the house spectrum. The results are every bit as inventive, enjoyable and forward thinking as you'd expect.

Review: First he asked us to follow him, then he asked us if we wanted to find to find him. Now he's asking us to move closer... Steve Spacek's Eglo series has been a remarkable trip so far as he continues to illustrate unseen pictures with far-out, unbounded sounds and arrangement. "Mov Clsr" is the steamy dreamy soul number while "Garage Days" unravels the usually tightly wound two-step into a much spacier, dreamy affair, "Boo Boo Step" is a trip into the heart of an old BBC Micro computer while "Nano Nights" closes on a flighty 160BPM step session where lights twinkle and cascade with fluorescent fun. No one makes music like Spacek. Beautiful.

Review: Stuttering off-beat fractured dancehall wizardry, Spacek smashes it once again with "Follow Me". Nothing fits as it should - and that's exactly how we like it. The keys ripple just behind the drums while the bass bumps ahead of them and Steve keeps his own time with his clipped falsetto falling just on the rhythmic sweet spot - but you're never quite sure how he made it in time. Loaded with an instrumental and acapella, there's heaps of creativity to be had right here.

Review: The ever adventurous soul singer Steve Spacek has been working with some of the most forward thinking producers in the world (Jay Dilla and Mark Pritchard for instance) since taking time out of his band activities to concentrate on solo work. His album on Sound In Colour last year further exposed his dynamic approach to song writing and these two brand new 12"s take this pioneering style even further. This is a 2 part series of EP's with tracks from his forthcoming LP on Jazzy Sport. Exciting new Japanese import 12"'s strictly limited to 1000 copies worldwide.
