Review: In a taxi en route to an airport, Gerd Janson mentioned to Midland that he might have some demos for the label that he had been working on with fellow Frankfurter, Shan. What resulted were a pair of tracks that perfectly nail the vibe and what the label is about, 'soundtracking the moments of the night and day when everyone on the dancefloor feels like a family.' Legend has it that in 2015, Midland watched Janson close Berlin's infamous Panorama Bar. The way he played on the night, the energy levels he maintained in the room altogether inspired him to write some music influenced by the experience. The tracks that followed were the first release on Regraded and fast forward to this, the third release: it all seems to have come full circle.

Techno
  1. Chord Memories
  2. Tool 1
  3. Tool 2
  4. Tool 3
Review: Running Back and Shan turn in some classic dub-driven techno with accompanying tools that would get the nod from STL. The 4/4 rhythm and moody "Chord Memories" on the A-side sounds similar to what Vril first produced for Giegling's Staub series, while "Tool 1" delivers some deep, filtering house. The Chicago house "Tool 2" on the other hand will be a more familiar sound to followers of Gerd Jansen's label, while "Tool 3" brings it back to square-one with some more upbeat, tape-delayed dub techno.

  1. The City Never Sleeps (6:33)
  2. Lin FM (6:12)
  3. Caliber (6:11)
  4. 691 Beats (4:52)
Review: Ever since Gerd Janson snapped up his fine Chord Memories E.P back in 2014, Shan has enjoyed a productive relationship with Running Back. City Never Sleeps marks the Frankfurt producer's third outing on the hyped house imprint, and boasts a quartet of retro-futurist treats. He doffs a cap to the melodious analogue deep house of the Burrell Brothers and Larry Heard on the delicious title track, before effortlessly emphasizing his own chunky, cymbal-heavy groove on the subtly acid-flecked "Lin FM". "Caiber" sees him sending shivers down the spine via warehouse-friendly piano riifs and boisterous house breakbeats, while closer "691 Beats" is a pulsating, bass-heavy drum workout with added rave riffs.

  3. Work It (Miami mix) (6:07)
  4. Work It (Rave beats) (4:25)
  5. Work It (padapella) (3:58)
Review: Few are better at saucer-eyed, rave revivalism than Victor Shan. He's made a habit of successfully doffing a cap to the early '90s, primarily via collaborations with Tuff City Kids and the booming Chord Memories 12" on Running Back. Here he's at it again, kicking off with a "Piano Mix" of "Work It" that sounds like a long lost collaboration between Inner City and Tyree Cooper. There's a more flustered, UK hardcore feel about "Bassline Party", even if it does contain a classic Chicago house bassline and a swinging, boompty style groove. Flip for a ghetto style "Miami Mix" of work it, plus a couple of handy DJ tools (the hip-house-goes-rave groove of the "Rave Beats" version being particularly potent).

  3. Awakenings (club mix) (6:28)
  4. Take Me To The Top (6:38)
Review: Frankfurt producer Shan has enjoyed a long and productive friendship with Running Back Gerd Janson. To date, it has included a swathe of collaborative tracks and remixes, as well as regular solo releases on the label. Shan's latest EP for the imprint is naturally packed with playable material. Saucer-eyed, retro-futurist opener "Who Run Tings", for example, underpins jaunty, Inner City style stabs and piano riffs with corking, hip-house style breakbeats, while "Awakenings" offers a slightly more muscular, big room-friendly take on the turn-of-the-'90s piano house blueprint. Shan deviates further from the script on the Nu Groove style vintage deep house musicality of "English Summer" and deep '80s synth-pop-meets-deep house flex of closer "Take Me To The Top".

  1. Stuck 4 (6:36)
  2. Schlagzeug (4:33)
  3. Valentino (6:44)
  4. Holzboden (6:13)
Review: Disco is the name of the game for Shan's fifth EP, "Tanzstuecke", on Running Back. It is a supremely seasonal offering, too, with plenty of lush tropical vibes and exotic flourishes bringing sunshine into your life. A healthy dose of 80s nostalgia washes over the motorik kicks and chattery claps of "Stuck 4" as you sink ever deeper into its smooth grooves, before "Schlagzeug" gets heavier, darker and jerkier in its rhythms. For hands in the air moments of retro synth cool look no further than "Valentino", while this most varied and vital package is completed with the gurgling bass reverberations and far-sighted chords of the majestic "Holzboden".

  3. Jo Bisso - "The Mistery With Me" (Glowing Palms edit) (6:52)
  4. Charly Kingson - "Manyaka" (Shan dub) (5:09)
Review: A mixed bag of groove goodies from Africa Seven on their ever-funky edit series. First up is one of Cameroon's funkiest exports, Pasteur Lappe, whose cosmically charged 1979 Disques Esperance release "Na Real Sekele Fo Ya" gets a cheeky re-jig from Shan. Flip for a powerful soul twist from Glowing Palms as they get busy on the bassline and middle eight section of another Disques Esprance artist Jo Bisso. Finally, Shan closes the show with another floor-focused edit, this time of Charly Kingson's "Manyaka". Soulful, strident and jacked up by Shan's new arrangement, this will have your dancefloor swooning from the off.
