Review: Reel People Music breaks new ground, in more ways than one, with the launch of fresh compilation series Broken, Deep & Dope. A spin-off from acclaimed compilation brand Soulful, Deep & Dope - introduced back in 2015 - this new series sees the much-loved independent imprint pushing further at the boundaries of soulful music. All with that customary Reel People feeling. Broken, Deep & Dope 2024, the series' first instalment, unleashes 20 superlative examples of the soulful 'bruk' (broken beat), nu beat and nu jazz sound that has so innovatively informed contemporary dancefloors around the world since its inception back in late '90s West London.

Review: These days, vinyl releases from Sean McCabe's admirable Good Vibrations Music imprint are few and far between, though what they do put out is excellent. For proof, check out this belated sequel to their first multi-artist EP, which landed in 2021. To kick things off, Glenn Underground serves up a gently Latin-tinged take on Harold Matthews Jr's 'This Place' - all soulful vocals, fluid bass guitar, bouncy beats, and infectious electric piano licks - before McCabe joins forces with Black Sonix on the jazzy, jaunty and bass-heavy jazz-funk/Latin house fusion of 'Modulate'. Deep soulful house and nods to Atjazz are the order of the day on Madeeha, McCabe and Dj Mixjah's 'Still Standing Here', while the Underground Project rework of 'You Don't Know' by David Bailey and MissFly is a tech-tinged slab of deep, soulful house.

Sean McCabe's work has formed a solid backbone for Dave Lee's Z Records in the last couple of years. He has a fresh disco style that pairs the old with the new in essential ways. For this new 12" he teases his new album with a sampler of four reworks and remixes. His take on 'Now What' is deep and glossy, then he takes The Blackbyrds' 'Mysterious Vibes' in a slick and soulful deep house direction complete with standout lead sax. The deep house mood continues on the 'Timeline' remix chi has late night keys and exudes real warmth. Last of all is a fantastic broken beat workout that is lush and jazzy.

Review: 'Wanna Dance' is the new jam by deep house heavyweight Sean McCabe (Good Vibrations) and Last Forever chief Turbojazz. Said to be conceived during the lockdown period, the track recalls the energy of classic Detroit deep house and even features one of the city's favourite voices in the form of Javonntte. On the flip, the spiritual vibe of Moondance's rework calls to mind the work of Motor City legend Alton Miller, while EVM128 aka Evermean Beats really soaks up the vibe of his new hometown - London - on his nu-jazz broken beat perspective that would make even Kaidi Tatham stand up and notice.
