Review: Attention class is in session as Rick Wilhite serves up a lesson in classic God Son manoeuvres for the Freedom School label which has previously dropped heat by IG Culture, Kaidi Tatham and Mark De Clive Lowe. The Freedom School DJ Series Vol 1 12" is a typical Wilhite release, veering from the deep and the dusty to the deranged and reaffirms Rick as one of Detroit's most treasured exponents of Motor City gritty sonics. A Side hugger "Tribute & Respect" eases you in, laying some African vocals over a lovely rasping groove that offers hip aligning forward momentum in equal doses to the soulful deepness of the saturated bass line. From here Wilhite turns pretty fckn gnarly on the alien voodoo thrust of "Techno Dust" whilst "Kinky" is a wondrous lo-fi gurgler. FXHE bossman Omar S gets a mastering credit too!

Review: Surprisingly, this is Detroit house veteran Rick Wilhite's debut album. When you consider his length of service and gargantuan reputation in deep house circles his first releases slipped out in the early 1990s, after all it's unsurprising that the release of Analog Aquarium is considered something of an event. And rightly so; you'll struggle to find quite as good a collection of high grade Motor City house. Shuffling between loose, lazy Beatdown excursions (check the brilliant Theo Parrish/Osunlade collaboration "Blame It On The Boogie") and upbeat, drum-heavy deep house floor fillers ("Deep Horizon") via jazzy analogue dubscapes ("Muzic Gonna Save The World"), it's a predictably formidable set.

  1. Rick Wilhite - "Analog Love" (Dez Andres remix)
  2. Marcellus Pittman - "In Due Time" (Ricardo Miranda remix)
Review: The Rick Wilhite Presents: Vibes New and Rare Series from 2010 gets revisited in this prime remix offering from Rush Hour. The lead track sees Wilhite's "Analog Love" getting a driving chord-driven rework from Andres, who delivers another one of his stone cold killers filled with the sort of deeply affecting melodies that make his productions so vital. On the flip, Marcellus Pittman's "In Due Time" gets a rework from Ricardo Miranda that transforms it with '80s boogie textures that offer a different kind of depth.

  2. The RASE - "Whispers" (6:06)
  3. Lenni Gait's Melody Band - "Embrace (The Original Melody Vibe)" (5:58)
Review: The Collective Rhythm Network is broadcast out of Hamilton, ON (Canada). The weekly radio show is hosted by Geoff Adamson with Marc Andrew and focuses on underground dance music: from the '70s into the present day - with a specific focus on Detroit sounds. Expect to hear disco, boogie, house and techno, all connecting the dots along the way. This EP was produced in celebration of the radio show's 20th anniversary and features Three Chairs man Rick Wilhite, sounding unlike anything before on the brooding dancefloor drama of "Mind Control", Toronto legend Ron Allen of Strobe Records (as The RASE) on the sexy, late-night mood lighting of "Whispers" and Lenni Gait's Melody Band with the evocative/life-affirming deepness of "Embrace" (The Original Melody Vibe) originally released in '96 of Terrence Parker's Intangible imprint.

Review: Last seen on Stilove4music back in 2008 sharing plate space with TJ Dumas and DJ Marquis, the God Son Rick Wilhite makes a welcome return to Jerome Derradji's label with The MC. This time Wilhite goes toe to toe with Tim McAllister of MC Edits fame, with the pair contributing a track each to both sides. If you want a glimpse at Wilhite's personal armoury of tough to the bone edits then this is the record for you - just witness how Rick dices the extended drum break on lead cut "My Life Is A Minimal Circle". McAllister offers Chi-town style percussive sweat to the Detroit grit of the God Son with the final cut "Catchin Sun" the track proper disco heads will always reach for.

Review: Seriously amazing 14 track collection curated by Detroit's gatekeeper of all things deep, Rick Wilhite. The Vibes New & Rare compilation, out on Rush Hour, features killer work from Motor City heroes old and new, including Theo Parrish, Kyle Hall, Marcellus Pittman and the all star Urban Tribe lineup. Wilhite dons his Godson moniker and teams up with Detroit darling Kyle Hall on "Microburst", which provides one of the more interesting, experimental moments on the album. The unreleased material from some of the city's lesser known producers is worth checking out, while anything that carries the tag "Theo Parrish" and "unreleased" should be snapped up pronto. An utterly essential release.

Review: Yes The Godson is back doing his thing for Rush Hour! Detroit legend Rick Wilhite first put his compiling skills to play for the Amsterdam empire back in 2010 with the excellent Vibes New & Rare Music, an 11-track release that celebrated the role the esteemed selector and producer played in moulding local Detroit tastes as the head of the Vibes New & Rare Music record store. Theo Parrish, Glenn Underground and Marcellus Pittman all contributed, whilst the compilation also worked as a platform to introduce newer names such as Kyle Hall and Ricardo Miranda. A second volume is most welcome and expands Wilhite's remit to include music by producers from Detroit, Chicago and New York. The first of two double 12" editions kicks off with a sublime production from Blaze's Josh Milan and doesn't let up on the heat, with Jovonn, K Alexi and a collaborative cut from Wilhite and Norm Talley amongst the highlights.

Review: Vibes New & Rare Music 2 reaches it's conclusion here as Rush Hour drop the second and final double vinyl helping of the Rick Wilhite curated compilation with a suitably high profile cast of contributors involved. If you checked Part One which dropped earlier this year, you'll know Wilhite has expanded the remit to include producers from Chicago and New York - and if you didn't check it what's wrong with you! Any compilation that starts with an exclusive cut from Moodymann is gonna be good, and the dusty, disjointed "Momma" sets the tone quality wise for what follows. The Godson himself delivers a thunderous, stripped back take on "A Matter of Honour" by Sean Tate and this dukes it out with the apocalyptic electro of DJ Stingray and the rugged beatdown of Orlando Voorn as our favourites from this great collection.
