Review: It's vital that the uninitiated understand one thing about 21-year-old Alexander O'Connor - his infectious and well crafted pop tunes are almost destined to bore a hole into your brain and stay there for quite some time. Like Michael Buble meeting Ed Sheeran at someone's Macmillan Coffee Morning. If that sounds even vaguely off-putting then this one clearly isn't aimed at you. But it is aimed at those who appreciate artists that can switch between a kind of Grammar school rap delivery, croonerdom and uptempo boy band business. From the piano and vocal R&B number "Pluto Projector", to the chart-friendly freight train of "Never Had The Balls" and the light acoustic guitar soul effort "Stressed Out", O'Connor's third studio album "Pony" is an incredibly sweet introduction to an artist who's clearly packing plenty of talent.

Review: Crooning has been back in fashion for well over a decade, albeit crooning through the eyes (or voice) of millennial and now Gen Z artists. Crooning that marries the classically smooth lyricism of the Brat Pack, soul and jazz, with elements of hip-hop, R&B and electronic music. With this in mind Rex Orange County came along at the right time, even if he was late to join the likes of Frank Ocean at the party.

'Bcos', his youthfully abbreviated, graffiti-scratched-into-school desk debut album - here on vinyl for the first time - certainly made a bold statement of intent. From the most traditionally soulful, perhaps the guitar-vocal whistle infectiousness of pared back "Corduroy Dream", to the loosest and jazziest ("Portrait Of Ned"), and the hippest and hoppiest (the delightfully offbeat and politically astute "Green Eyes (Part 2)", it remains a pleasure from start to finish.

Review: Having risen to much more note than an average featured artist through multiple appearances on the Grammy-nominated Tyler, The Creator album, 'Flower Boy', Alexander James O'Connor - better known to all as Rex Orange County - finally broke though into the big leagues with this, his debut album. Unveiled in 2017, its combination of soul, cute lo-fi pop, hip hop and jazz proved infectious enough to entrance listeners across the world, many of who no-doubt heard the voice, and its inflections, and immediately assumed he was from southern California.

Amazingly, he's not, and instead grew up in Surrey, England, earning the nickname 'The OC' at high school, durning a time when the teen high school drama of the same name was widely followed. Background notes aside, half a decade on Rex's inaugural solo long form outing still sounds good enough to bathe in, and is guaranteed to make newcomers (if there are any) fall in love with him, and avid fans do the same again.
