Review: Black Buffalo are a unique outfit hailing from Nova Scotia, producing a retroized take on funk and boom-bap, and having done so since 2016. Nick Bike, resident mainstay of the label, is an all-rounder. A self-described open-format DJ, his sole purpose is to please the crowd, and the crowd only. Such a feat can only be achieved by the making of specialised re-edits. This latest 7", to add to Bike's pile, re-chops Al Green's 'Let's Stay Together' to instrumental, slowed-down, club-readiness.

Review: This latest 445rpm from Black Buffalo finds Nick's Green Fingers alias remix 1991's Naughty by Nature anthem 'OPP' into something completely different. His progressive bassline nails you to the floor and brings plenty of house music feels while the hip hp swagger makes it all the more dance able. According to Chuck D, LXVNDR is the queen of Canadian hip hop and here she joins Nick Bike with a mid-tempo groove full of swagger. After recently tackling East Oakland rapper Too Short's 'Blow The Whistle' he now looks to Al Green's iconic 'Let's Stay Together.' He lets swooning strings open with a luxuriant vibe before a more driving back beat powers things along as the original vocal comes in. 'Award Tour' (Green mix) takes the original melodies and adds them to a rolling hip hop beat with some more contemporary rap styles delivered over the top.

Review: Boston MC Ed O.G. his Da Bulldogs crew laid down their 1991 hip hop classic 'I Got To Have It' and now, decades late, producer Nike Bike reworks it into something utterly new and fresh for the Canadian label Buffalo. He does it with some big old boom bap drums and some busy and funky horn stabs, while the original vocals from Ed OG bring that old school flavour over the new school sound with plenty of added scratching for extra flex. On the flip is another great joint in the harder edged 'Put A Vowel On It.'

Review: Nick Bike makes a fourth - yes, fourth - 2024 Q1 appearance with 'Steady Rockin'', following up the prolific producer and editor's early-year swathe of releases, also including '808 Doves', 'Feels So Good', and 'Rollerskatin''. This is the only one of the four to be released on Bike's very own Chosen Spokes label, which oils the gears, shunts the V-brakes, and whips out the Presta for a veritable pedal-pumping in the medley/breaks/ soul/funk/dance veins. This time, we're in for a treat, with Bike reinterpreting a classic, making for a well-known melange sampled from bits of the Queen Of Soul herself.

His 'Inner City' from the timeless What's Going On album gets a modern update from Jim Sharp that retains the soulful vocal of the original but with new drums.
