Review: Eleven miasmic, brooding tape meditations from the legendary Bryn Jones, reissued and packaged by Ukrainian label I Shall Sing Until My Land Is Free. Recorded in the immediate wake of the Oslo I accords, the album both bares Jones' stance on the peace pact and eerily predicts its aftermath, with humming, resonant drones, tinny vocal fragments and reversed percussion colliding in aural analogues of political tension, distrust and cyclicality. Overall it is an equally meditative and ominous listen, peppered with many of the hallmarks of mid-nineties Muzlimgauze productions, from swung, steppy, proto-DMZ ride cymbals, to plucked FM synth MIDI earworms, to his ever-present swathes of darkly churning string drones. Essential!

Fear Of Gadaffi
Nettle Cloth
Baize Tents
Review: Early on in Muslimgauze's (Bryn Jones') career, the musician released two ultra-mysterious releases on the equally mysterious label Hessian, which some speculate might've been comprised entirely of Jones himself. Hammer & Sickle was one of these two early LPs from the faux Arabic auteur, and was notable for its distinct lack of any back cover artwork (who needs a visual stimulus when you've got such great music on board?). Though still indicative of Jones' work as Muslimgauze, superfans will note that this release sounds a little more formative than some of his later releases, owing to its lessened use of Middle Eastern instrumentation and sparser production in general. B-sider 'Fear Of Gadaffi' is the most intermittent in this regard, revelling more than anything in the simple effect of spring delay on sampled, freeform perc hits.

Review: ***B-STOCK: Creasing to corner of outer sleeve but otherwise in excellent condition***

Muslimgauze's Veiled Sisters, ironically, is but one of many releases by the timely artist to have been posthumously 'unveiled' with new attention cast on it. Originally released with longtime collaborators Staalplaat, the LP was notable for its deepouts and loop-based orientations, moving away from the stop-start wonk of dub into straighter rhythms and sample-based orientations. Essentially made up of variations on the same two-note motif, the album cycles through mega-crisp drums and modular jump and pops, creating a curiously sepia-tinged beatscape, recalling near-fantastical ideas of the Middle Eastern world as ever.

Review: Muslimgauze's Intifaxa has previously only been released on CD and is one of a series of four double albums on the cult Australian label Extreme Music. It's another sublime example of the late experimental artist's ability to blend electronic beats and Middle Eastern influences into a unique fusion of sound that is part underground house and part psychedelic trance music. Released posthumously, the album transports listeners into a world of hypnotic rhythms, intricate percussion, and haunting melodies. The tracks are awash with modulated field recordings and tribal grooves that make for a transcendental and immersive listen all while showcasing Muslimgauze's vision and innovative approach to production.

Review: Staalplaat continue to take care of Bryn Jones' Muslimgauze legacy, here presenting a vinyl edition of the Kashmiri Queens album they originally released as a limited CD edition in 2001. Some of the tracks had previously appeared on the Nadir Of Purdah EP in 1995, but as a whole this release reframes them in the broader context of the wholly unique soundworld Jones crafted for himself and his music. There is a range of moods on offer, with synthesis and meditation more prominent than the abrasion sometimes associated with Muslimgauze, especially on the extended trip of the second track.

Review: Here be another posthumous release by Muslimgauze, the prolific and controversial project of the late Bryn Jones, an obsessive musician who dedicated his life to making music inspired by the struggles and conflicts of the Muslim world. Eye For An Eye was recorded in 1993, around the same time as his classic Veiled Sisters, and features a similar blend of ambient dub and tinkling, wacked-out beats. Nevertheless, its body is simply four long pieces, unfurling subtle changes in rhythm and texture over time. Be thankful for this reissue, as it originally only came out as part of Staalplaat's subscription series.

Review: The eternally mystical Muslimgauze was as experimental as they come. They turned out a wealth of now cult albums that still sound like very little else out there'd there has been a rather extensive reissue project in the world over the last few years. The next of their albums to get put put in remastered form across various formats is Khan Younis from back in 1993. All fused into the competing tracks that make it up are sounds from the worlds of experimental, ambient, acid house and dub to make for a truly unique listen.

Review: We're delighted there is such a good run of reissues of music from the cult and late Mancunian experimenter that was Muslimgauze. We're also fans of the fact it is coming across multiple formats, with this one coming on CD and vinyl. The man born Bryn Jones made everything from noise to industrial to big beat to deeply seductive and inventive house music, often with some seriously heady political overtones. Khan Younis might be him at his best with plenty of unique tribal dub-trance sounds and many rich influences from Arabic culture with hypnotic rhythms and eastern melodic vibes. A real doozy that is still way ahead of its time.

Review: This reissued version of Muslimgauze's 'Emia Bakia' is a long out-of-print and hard to find album from 1994. It is one of the most unique in the late, great producer's vast catalogue. The set's uniqueness lies in the surprising shape and focus of the rhythms that Muslimgauze utilised on the album; while as percussion-rich as ever, and often cloaked in his usual dark ambient sounds, dub-influenced basslines and Eastern exoticism, the beats are regularly far more dancefloor-focused than you'd expect. This isn't otherworldly ambient dub, but rather some mind-altering mutation of psychedelic house music that still sounds like nothing else around.

Review: 'Arab American Radio' is one of Muslimgauze's rarer cassettes, salvaged from his impressive vault in 2020. Spanning unusual genre experiments for Bryn Jones, from big beat to house, it moves away from his preferred experiments in dub, in favour of horrible noise bursts and integrations of steel hangdrum and electronic beat. There's even a rather weird attempt at jungle on the B1, which we'll wager doesn't follow the 4/4 time grid.

Review: 25 years after his tragic, unexpected and untimely death, Muslimgauze's music still stands out as a landmark - not to mention huge - collection of bold experimental journeys into the farthest reaches of electronics. The fact he was doing this in a very different time, long before beats and basslines started looking outside the US-European axis for influence, and when equipment was analogue, only makes the legacy more impressive.

One of several reissues of the Manchester underground noise hero's albums, all aimed at commemorating the sad anniversary, Emak Bakia is in many ways a more traditional dance music album than most of his others, and as such will hopefully find favour in contemporary record bags bound for clubs with more open music policies. From raw drums and sparse atmospheres, to driving Arabic-edged techno and hypnotic, low-slung groovers, it still sounds as fresh today as when we first heard it.

Review: Bryn Jones was the man behind the always hugely experimental Muslimgauze project. The late Mancunian has a catalogue of music that is complex and dense, especially for newcomers but the ongoing reissues of it will help people get stuck in and explore. Lo Fi India Abuse has been remastered for the occasion and comes on vinyl, picture disc as here, or CD. It is a mix of brilliant, brutal and beguiling sound collages that ride ramshackle rhythms and chew up and spit out biased bass, rusty metal, middle eastern melody, psyched-out dub funk and plenty of hard-to-define sounds in between.

Review: It has been 25 years since Bryn Jones left us for the great musical odyssey in the sky, and reissuing Lo Fi India Abuse is a fitting way to honour a true musical visionary who is pretty much impossible to pigeonhole or accurately describe. Nevertheless, this record, as with many of his near-countless others, offers a great insight into the breadth and bold sense of adventure running through his output.

As dense and complex as anything he gave fans and followers in his decade and a half of putting out sounds, this outing first landed the year after his death, and by that point a musical identity was more than fully formed. Highly percussive, littered with aural motifs from far away lands, filtered through noise and disruption, it's an exotic form of IDM, as compelling and immediate as beguiling and off-centre.

Review: The sprawling catalogue of sadly departed Mancunian experimentalist Muslimgauze (real name Bryn Jones) can be difficult to navigate for newcomers, but there are some albums that are nothing less than essential. 'Veiled Sisters', a 1993 double-album inspired by his support for the Palestinian Liberation Organisation and peppered with spoken word snippets from the Arabic world, is one of those sets. Each disc comprises three lengthy suites of tracks that perfectly showcase the late producer's unique approach to ambient and electronica, subtly shifting between melodious, glistening, occasionally rhythmic soundscapes, found sound style collages, heady ambient dub, hypnotic beat-scapes peppered with Middle Eastern percussion and instrumentation, and intoxicating epics that sidestep neat categorisation.

Review: Veiled Sisters is the 1993 album by Muslimgauze. Mancunian Bryn Jones was the man behind the music and his sudden passing aged just 37 in 1999 left many things unanswered, as well as plenty of unreleased work on the shelf. Some of it has crept out in the years since but reissued here is one of his well-regarded and most bewitching works. It is the first time this album has ever been available on vinyl and not was dedicated to the Palestine Liberation Organization. Both halves of the record lean on the history and conflicts of the modern Islamic world and musically, a balance is struck between raucous instrumentals and lush ambient.

It was recorded and mixed at the Abraham Mosque in Manchester, and it captures the essence of Bryn Jones' imperious project in perfect form. Drawing heavily on Arabic musical motifs and fusing them with a haunting post-industrial sound palette, there's nothing else in the musical world quite like Muslimgauze. This particular reissue also features 'Intifadah (Extended Remix)', which originally came out in 1988 on the Iran release. This vinyl pressing is a must for fans and new arrivals to Jones' work alike.

Review: Muslimgauze was an experimental visionary up until their passing, with a 96 title discography that has since more than doubled in posthumous rereleases and unreleased material. The British electronic producer's work all revolved around ideas and discourse in the Muslim sphere, with stories that obviously bear repeating. This release is a standalone reissue of CD3 from the 1996 triple album 'Fatah Guerrilla', a melodic and oftentimes industrial pounding - with 10-second loops repeated with liquid bass and interspersed vocal samples such as on 'Guilded Gulag Mind-er'. It's easiest to describe the album as a sonical collage, with sections clipping into each other and distorting like a scratched record like on 'Gifts from an Afghan''. 'Chechnya Over Dub' is a fantastic opportunity to dive headfirst into the expanded Muslimgauze universe.

Review: Originally released in 1997, just two years before his untimely passing, Farouk Enjineer is one of Muslimgauze's most celebrated albums and arrived at a time when the concept behind this production project had been fully realised. It also landed at a point when his output was best described as relentless (the artist would put out 96 titles before his death), which only serves to accentuate how incredibly consistent he was, and the kind of work rate he had achieved.

One of Muslimgauze's 'power noise' epics, tracks are made from some incredibly vivid and strange parts, but these are used as building blocks for much more recognisable overall arrangements. Some of the work here defines downtempo late night breaks, other parts share more in common with the traditional sounds of the regions the artist looked to for inspiration. All are essentially crafted from abstract sounds.

Review: Bryn Jones was nothing short of an enigma. The UK producer managed to ensure his work would always be regarded as a collector's item while simultaneously ensuring very little chance of success outside the farthest flung reaches of the experimental electronic and noise communities. Putting out over 90 original albums for 32 labels in his time under the Muslimgauze moniker, all of which were very limited releases, his ideas were as impressive as the inspiration was staunchly political.

Not that you would necessarily be able to tell from the tracks themselves. Taking elements of Middle Eastern, Arabesque, dub, industrial, and percussive electronica, his work is born from deep dives into Muslim culture and history, and the finished results were wildly ahead of their time - atmospheric, musically adventurous, hypnotic and, more often than not, unarguably danceable. Such is the case here.

Review: It's nice to get a new edition of Muslimgauze's 'Emia Bakia', a long out-of-print and hard to find album from 1994, because the album remains one of the most unique in the late, great producer's vast catalogue.

Review: Staalplaat continues to mine the extensive archives of the late, great Bryn Jones AKA Muslimgauze, this time via a suite of untitled tracks unearthed on an unfinished cassette. According to the label, the nine "Zilver tracks" were recorded straight to tape in the producer's home studio in February 1995, four years before his tragic death. Musically, they explore similar themes to his other work, combining redlined IDM, electro and dubtronica beats with Arabic melodies, spooky electronics, Middle Eastern percussion, enveloping ambient chords and spoken word samples lifted from news reports and documentaries about the Middle East. While undeniably rough around the edges, Feel This Hiss is every bit as immersive and intoxicating as the material Jones released during his lifetime.
