The Evolutions: Phase Two
Cat: VISIO 035. Rel: 23 Sep 20

Deep House
Aleqs Notal - "Midnight" (7:26)
Meftah - "Up From Here" (5:10)
Taelue - "Liberate" (7:20)
Afrikan Sciences - "Bass Reeves" (4:22)
Review: Deep house might not be getting the headlines it did a few years ago, but that actually means those who jumped on the hype train have all alighted once again and now only those truly devoted to the form remain. That means we get high quality EPs like this one from Visions Inc. Aleqs Notal takes us on a spiritual trip littered with toms and jazz-chords to kick things off before Meftah gets more experimental with a broken beat, tripped out keys and rubbery bass all sinking you into a state of trance. For those who like it more straight up, Taelue obliges, and as with all Afrikan Sciences tunes, the closer is a masterfully deep concoction.

Time To Play: First Step
Cat: TTPV 01. Rel: 08 Dec 23

Deep House
Meftah - "Recognizing Strength In Healing" (5:35)
Colosimo - "It Works" (feat Alessandro Barbieri) (7:11)
Phonorem - "Hyper Dino+" (feat Stefano Nardon) (4:59)
LSZ - "21-12-21" (5:04)
Dreamboy - "Sunset Groove" (5:55)
Review: It's Time to Play says this new Italian label, and when you hear what they have put together on their first EP to entice you to do so you will be happy to get involved. It's a classy deep house outing from the off with Meftah's 'Recognizing Strength In Healing' exploring subtle sound worlds with muted chords and gentle finger clicks. Colosimo's 'It Works' (feat Alessandro Barbieri) has dancing synths and deep and dusty drums overlaid with jazzy chord work and Phonorem keeps the late-night jazz houde vibes coming with 'Hyper Dino' (feat Stefano Nardon). Two more B-side cuts round out with more classy and sophisticated house depths.

10 Years: Part 3 Of 3
Cat: D3E 020LTD. Rel: 08 Jan 24

Deep House
Jason Hogans - "Guard Of Joy" (4:44)
Zopelar - "Resolution" (6:06)
Malik Hendricks - "Green Mango" (4:07)
Meftah - "Maha Shatki (Great Energy)" (4:58)
Damar Davis - "Kiss In The Dark" (4:41)
Review: The third and final EP from the ten year anniversary series by French label D3 Elements is another one that offers a wide range of excellent grooves. To kick off, Jason Hogans takes us into woozy late night territory with muffled leads and lazy breaks, then Zopelar heads for the cosmos on his radiant synth laced house offering 'Resolution.' Malik Hendricks keeps it low key and slow with his intimate basement sounds on 'Green Mango' then Meftah rebuilds on a dusty Theo Parrish tip with 'Maha Shatki.' Damar Davis offers pure cosmic deep house lushness on closer 'Kiss In The Dark.'

Life Like EP
Cat: AOM 003. Rel: 07 Mar 22

Broken Beat/Nu Jazz/Nu Soul
Tiers (1:05)
Peace Go With You (7:27)
Frames Of Reference (3:03)
Come Fly Away (7:09)
Pay It Forward (2:37)
Review: This is the 3rd solo release from Meftah under his own Musha Publishing imprint, bringing another strong batch of tracks for all kinds of music heads. After his debut release 'Information Travels Through', Meftah followed up with a digital beat tape that only teased what was to come on the next record, and with this, he delivers. In true "Detroit Beat Down" fashion, Meftah's 'Life-Like' EP is a fresh perspective from the Motor City, while still remaining familiar to his roots.

Information Travels Through EP
Cat: AOM 001. Rel: 24 Jun 20

Broken Beat/Nu Jazz/Nu Soul
Music That Excites Me (4:00)
6 Minutes (6:25)
Alive In The Future (1:39)
Moral Of My Story (8:17)
Patient For Now (2:20)
Review: It's early days for Meftah, who you may have spotted remixing Amp Fiddler on Mahogani Music alongside Jahn Cloud, but this low key 12" highlights him as a serious talent to keep tabs on in the Detroit music community. There's no hiding his musical roots and influences, as dusty keys, live bass and loose, expressive percussion intertwine in a mellow, bluesy haze. This is cut from the same cloth as Kenny Dixon Jr, Theo Parrish, Jay Daniel and scores of others, but Meftah has his own mellow mood to impart on these five addictive, seductive trips through deepest jazz-inflected house.

Friends & Mentors
Cat: STYFLY 3. Rel: 17 Dec 20

Deep House
Terri Whodat - "Get Out Of There" (7:57)
Poseidon Neptune - "Saht Nam" (3:27)
Meftah - "Ur Utility" (6:59)
John Silas - "9th Creation" (feat John Barera - short mix) (4:14)
Review: Thomas Xu's Steady Flight Circle cruises to a third release here and calls upon a fine band of talents to contribute one track each under the title of Friends & Mentors. He says of the EP "it features the gifts and talents of individuals who I look up to and honestly enjoy the company of." Terri Whodat kicks off with a heavily rooted and mid-tempo deep house track with a candle-lit vibe and gentle pianos while 'Saht Nam' is a cosmic affair with reflective chords over prickly beats. The flip side then gets super zoned out a dreamy with Meftah and jazzy tinged thanks to the great Rhodes work on '9th Creation.'
