Sankofa Season

Broken Beat/Nu Jazz/Nu Soul
Low Ceilings (Mala remix) (3:50)
Washed In You (Wu-Lu remix) (2:38)
Learning Lessens (Shy One remix) (6:22)
To Your Heart (Gavsborg remix) (4:54)
Review: In a meeting between generations of broken beat titans, Andrew Ashong and Kaidi Thatham's Sankofa Season rightly earned classic status soon after its release in 2020, and now we're being taken back into the heart of these tracks with a heavyweight remix package from some serious talent. Mala's imperious dubstep touch brings some low-end pressure to 'Low Ceilings' or Shy One chopping up 'Learning Lessons' in her peerless deft style, there's a lot of ground covered by this considered gathering of minds. Special mention goes to Equiknoxx's Gavsborg and Shanique Marie, bringing a sweetly soulful touch to 'To Your Heart'.

Review: Given their combined talents, you'd expect any collaborative album crafted by Andrew Ashong and Kaidi Tatham to be nigh-on essential. Happily, we can confirm that Sankofa Season, their first joint album, is ruddy, bloody brilliant (as Alan Partridge might say). Richly soulful, quietly jazzy and wholeheartedly positive from start the finish, the set sees them jump between deep jazz-funk, hazy contemporary soul, jazzy broken beat, breezy Latin soul, organic deep house and immersive, slow-motion soundscapes. Throughout, Tatham's organ, keyboard and piano work is highly impressive and Ashong's vocals are every bit as sumptuous as usual. Recommended.

EDB - "You Bring Me Joy" (feat Marsha & Alberto Lincetto) (6:03)
Review: Second chapter of the 'Inside' series of various artists eps selected by Neroli's very own Volcov. This time with a more eclectic approach than the previous volume, exploring more electronic landscapes with Domu's downtempo ambience song aptly titled 'Point Of Entry' and Jamal Moss's unmistakable sound on his opus 'Black Hands Sound 63' on the first side. On the flipside Mother Tongue's own Patrick Gibin returns with another bouncing collaboration with Kaidi Tatham entitled 'Don't Read' and new upcoming wonder producer EDB serves 'You Bring Me Joy' with the help of Alberto Lincetto on keys and NTS resident Marshmello on vocals!

Lights Out (7:02)
High Flames (6:42)
Flash Burn (6:26)
Review: Verona-based Patrick "Twice" Gibin is making a habit of collaborating with nu-jazz and broken beat veterans. Having previously joined forces with one-time Sonar Kollektiv regular Clara Hill, this E.P sees him acquire the services of killer keys-man Kaidi Tatham of Bugz In The Attic fame. The latter's smart, jazz-funk influenced riffs are all over the sweet, gently soulful and wonderfully positive deep house A-side "Lights Out", but can also be heard on the woozy, broken beat-goes-boogie flex of "High Flames". "Flash Burn", another musically rich, organic house groover - this time complete with what sound like eyes-closed guitar solos - completes an excellent package.

Groove On (6:06)
Review: House music's ability to make you feel good is part of its appeal, and artists like New Jersey majesty Josh Milan of Blaze fame, and London broken beat astro Kaidi Tatham sure know that. They link here with Patrick Gibin for an EP that brims with summer time soul, joyous keys and funky bass riffs that are impossibly sweet. Jazz funk, house and boogie all colour the tracks here with "Don't Be Rude" brining the cosmic vibes and "Groove On" making you want to move for days with its killer b-line and disco energy. Gorgeous stuff, for sure.

Love To The World: Theo Parrish Reinterpretations
Cat: NERO 053. Rel: 01 Mar 21

Deep House
Love To The World (Theo vocal mix) (6:27)
Love To The World (Theo acappella mix) (3:14)
Review: Neroli is always a safe port of call for real, soulful strains of house music, but even by their own standards they've gone further out this time around. The dream team of Patrick Gibin and Kaidi Thatham backing Josh Milan on vocals was a house holy grail when 'Love To The World' dropped last year, but now that magical combination of artistry gets a shot in the arm from the one and only Theo Parrish. On the A side, the Detroit legend lays on one of his inimitable rugged beatdowns, decorated with piano flourishes and punctuated with clattering percussion that takes the track higher and farther. On the flip, the track gets stripped right back for a special acappella version which lets Milan's voice and the light-fingered piano work intertwine in a beatless reverie.

Review: It's been a minute since we last heard from Earl Jeffers, the Cardiff-based artist who has been steadily making his mark in the house scene with a soulful style that calls back to some of the foundations of deep rooted Black house music from the UK. As such, it's significant to see him returning from a three year absence in collaboration with the imperious Kaidi Thatham. Their joint effort, 'The Essence', is a soaring, invigorating workout overflowing with Thatham's incredible musicianship front and centre. 'Higher' is a skipping, up for it garage house heater with raunchy organs and an infectious bounce, and it comes with an additional 'Alt Mix' which takes things a touch deeper for the late night crowd.

Earth Is Not For Humans
Seeing Is Believing
Review: Contemporary broken beat great Kaidi Tatham treads new ground as Shokazulu, a new alias. Tatham's M.O. is to add extra verve and groove to the often rigid broken beat sound, a trend that shouldn't have proliferated, given the ostensible rooting in ideas of freedom that jazz should have. 'Uniquely Fresh' sums this up to a T, mixing in all-live-performed funky basslines, jazz chords, intricate drum patterns and augmented melodic ornaments, while getting at something extra-transcendent and space-age. The slap-funk of 'Earth Is Not For Humans' is our highlight here.

Someting
Review: Yes! It's time for another Shokazulu transmission from Mr Kaidi Tatham which naturally arrives via the good ship 2000 Black. If you checked last year's debut Shokazulu long player for the label, you know this Tatham project perfectly embodies the musical spirit of 2000 Black, linking themes of the past with contemporary production methods on cuts that are forever forward thinking. Don't think that's changed on this latest 2000 Black drop from Shokazulu! Lead cut "Fresh Fromage" sees Tatham calling on close friends Mr Mensah and Mark Force and the vibe feels that much stronger for it. Commencing in true '70s jazz fusion style, the cut goes up a level when Force's drums come in and the full weight of the arrangement is revealed. The tempo drops on the flip as Tatham goes on a solo trip into blunted and bruk hip hop with "Something".

Review: Silhouette Browns debut was greatly received and seemed to fill a gap in the soul underground, so 5 years is a long time for a follow up LP but as the saying goes good things come to those that wait. The production & song writing team that is Silhouette Brown consists of Bembe Segue,Kaidi Tatham and Dego. This time around they are joined by a new vocalist the unmistakable sound of Philadelphia’s Lady Alma.
Lady Alma has appeared on countless club classics over the years from Sylk 130’s ‘When the Funk Hits the Fan’ to Soul Dahmma’s ‘Happy’ and 4hero’s ‘Hold it Down’.
‘Two’ moves Silhouette Brown into a relaxed head nod soul experience with some songs leaning towards a hip hop sound. An obvious example of that is ‘Get With It’ which features a guest performance from Brand Nubian’s Sadat X on a song about uniting and progression. Many subjects are sung about on ‘two’ such as suicide on ‘Leave A Note’ etc. All this whilst Dego and Kaidi push a warm sumptuous melody driven groove in a way that they only know how. Also check out the guest appearance of the M.D Akwasi on ‘Strawberries in Vinegar’ an instant boogie anthem.

Kaidi Tatham back on 2000BLACK needs little explanation really, does it? Anyone who takes broken beat and neo soul seriously should already be slipping this on in their cart, but for the uninitiated this is one of the grandmasters of the sound in full flight. 'Galaxy' is a beautiful, uplifting soul-boogie jam with a stunning vocal turn from Lola Violet, and it comes in two different twists depending on the energy you need to bring to your set - for us the 'Uptempo Mix' is a perfect shot of joy in the arm. 'A Message From Above' cools things down with gorgeous keys, a characteristically snagging beat and sultry horns, and 'Ergonomic Structures' slinks into the sweetest of downtempo funks that'll have you head nodding hard and keeping you chill all in the same beat.

Review: Kaidi Thatham remains one of the truest artists in the field of broken beat and modern jazz, and his fifth album for First Word shows no signs of slowing down. There's a certain signature you know belongs to him when those nasty Moog synth lines start flexing around the groove, but there's such depth and variety to his expression at this point in time, it feels like the possibilities are endless. From rattling neo-funk get downs to blissful downtempo reveries and on to the killer hip-hop of 'The Only Way' featuring Uhmeer on mic duties, this is an album bursting with invention at every turn.

One For The Brain (6:42)
Review: With a dizzying array of titles to his name - from multi-instrumentalist, to writer, to arranger, and producer - Kaidi Tatham is one of the UK's finest members of the nu-jazz and soulful dance music scene. 'It Never Stops' is his latest jazz-infused deep house EP, marking his first appearance on the iconic Cologne-based label, Yore. Following stand-out releases from Andy Vaz and Kez YM, this is another glistening addition to the label's catalogue. Tatham's delicate arrangement of light-footed grooves accompanied by melodies imbued with warmth grants this release suitability for both the cosy environs of home listening as well as dancefloors. Part of the label's highly sought after "limited" range, this is a release you'll want to get your hands on ASAP.

Review: The word 'legend' gets banded about rather a lot, but it is certainly applicable to West London scene stalwart Kaidi Tatham. Further confirmation of this elevated status can be found throughout "It's A World Before You", a staggeringly good album that marks the musician-producer's first solo set for some seven years. While rooted in the kind of warm, rich and life-affirming jazz-funk-fuelled broken beat workouts with which Tatham is most readily associated (and they're naturally superb), there's plenty of killer diversions dotted throughout. These include a couple of spacey, soul-flecked ambient rubs, a sublime collaboration with hip-hop/modern soul fusionists Children of Zeus, and a fine head-nodding hip-hop jam featuring rapper Uhmeer. In a word: essential.

Kaidi Tatham is a master of broken beats and a widely respected figure in the London music scene. His new 12 track album takes us on a lush and louche trip through all his myriad musical skills and styles. Boogie, gospel-tinged hip-hop, jazz-funk and more all colour the futurist grooves with contributions from The Easy Access Orchestra, and pianist Robert Mitchell. This is a fourth solo album from the man and maybe his best yet, even though it has come so quick on the heels of the release of An Insight To All Minds in 2021.

Review: In our eyes, Kaidi Tatham can do no wrong. The long-serving keyboardist barely seems to sleep and releases a high volume of collaborations and solo records, but his quality threshold is so high that there's barely a duff track in his catalogue. Over the last few years he's developed a trademark sound that wraps Herbie Hancock style jazz-funk keys around crunchy broken beats, while also drawing influence from hip-hop, '80s electro, boogie, Latin jazz and slick deep house. An Insight Into All Minds, the veteran musician's fifth solo album, is naturally rooted in this trademark style, offering up a collection of cuts that bristle with positivity, pack plenty of punch, and are as well produced and life-affirming as you'd expect. It's a high bar, but it could well be his single best LP to date.

We don't expect these to hang around in stock too long, in part because it's one of the most consistently on-point and musically expansive sets in Tatham's vast catalogue - and that's saying something. For proof, check the soulful bruk-up business of 'To My Surprise' (reminiscent of the best of the collective Bugz in the Attic project he was a big part of), the fluid, spiritual jazz-funk brilliance of opener 'Don't Hide Your Love' and the expansive, up-tempo excellence of 'Organic Juggernaut', where fluttering flutes, squelchy bass and sparkling pianos catch the ear.

Since then, he has of course gone on to greater critical and commercial success, but as this timely reissue proves, "In Search of Home" still hits home hard. Like much of his work, it deftly showcases his Herbie Hancock-like jazz and jazz-funk keyboard skills within tracks that variously join the dots between broken beat, hip-hop, deep house, Latin fusion and sumptuous slow jams. Colourful, rich, jazzy and impeccably performed throughout, the album remains one of the high points of Tatham's career and is well worth adding to your collection.

Review: Artist management agency Sounds Familiar has released some terrific seven-inch singles on their offshoot record label, including essential 45s from Sadar Bahar, Danny Krivit, Specter, Kai Alce and Mark Grusane. Here's another courtesy of one-man production factory Kaidi Tatham, who continues to hit the mark with each successive release. A-side 'Feeling Happy' is little less than superb: a languid, slow-motion shuffler rich in sun-drenched guitars, warming Rhodes keys, cascading trumpet solos and the kind of fluid, positive piano motifs frequently found on great jazz records. Flipside 'Sooner or Later' is equally as positive and righteous, with funkier broken beats making way to dancefloor jazz-funk beats and more mazy, sun-ripened piano solos.

Review: When this album was initially released way back in 2008, it was Kaidi Tatham's first under his given name (previously, he'd released solo records as Afronaught and appeared on all manner of collaborative releases).

Mjuvi (4:49)
Review: The hardest-working man in West London is back! By now we've become accustomed to Kaidi Tatham offering up regular doses of soul and jazz-funk-fired dancefloor goodness, but even by his high standards "You Find That I Got It" is something special. Warm, woozy, groovy and full of intricate musical details - brief synth solos, subtle orchestration and so on - the A-side title track is a wonderfully sunny slice of instrumental boogie-soul. Tatham's world-renowned keys playing comes to the fore on the organic broken beat/jazz-funk fusion of "Mjuvi", a flipside cut that's almost as good as the exceptional title track.

Review: After offering up EPs titled "Hard Times" and "Changing Times" in 2017, Kaidi Tatham returns to First Word to complete the trilogy with "Serious Times". Of course, the music contained within the EP's tightly packed grooves is as joyous, rich as intricate as ever. Check, for example, "Don't Cry Now", a samba-soaked, sun-kissed affair that wraps harmonic freestyle vocals, twinkling electric piano lines and darting jazz-funk bass around a seriously shuffling groove. Tatham's much-discussed jazz-funk influences are once again given an airing on "Sugar", while his fine piano work takes pride of place on instrumental hip-hop head-nodder "Zallom". Best of all, though, is opener "Cost of Living", which emphatically weaves together all of these strands and more besides.

Review: It's already been a great year for Kaidi Tatham, whose summer album "It's A World Before You" on First Word remains one of our favourite full-length sets of 2018. He's in great form once again on this follow-up EP for the 2000 Black imprint he co-helms with pal Dego. All four tracks bristle with his signature jazz-funk focused synthesizer solos and Herbie Hancock style flourishes, as well as plenty of sweaty, floor-friendly broken beats. Killer dancefloor thrills come in the shape of opener "Freddie Can't Run Away" (it's very reminiscent of his 2000s work as Agent K) and "Is Crimbo Really Here", while "But You Bring It Up" and standout "In My Life" both explore slower, deeper and more musically intricate pastures.

Review: The word virtuoso is thrown around like a rag in a laundry these days but Kaidi is definitely deserving of this title. A mind-blowingly talented multi-instrumentalist who was one of the clearest voices and driving forces in broken beat, Kaidi's skills remain just as slick, smooth and crafted with the fine art of surprise as ever as he follows up his "Changing Times" EP on First Word. "Hard Times" eases us in gently with a smooth jazz funk swoon laced with big orchestral sweeps, "I See What You See" ups the tempo with a superb steppy boogie twist that's loaded with some outrageous p-funk bass fills while "Super Lion" flexes around an afrobeat with full eyes (and feet) on the floor. Finally "We All Breathe The Same Air" closes with big dreamy drama that leaves you hanging for more... Just like all good virtuosos should.

Review: First Word welcome an absolute musical legend to the fold: Kaidi Tatham has recorded and/or performed with some of the very best names in contemporary funk, soul and jazz from Amy Winehouse to Bugz In The Attic. Also running a fine in silky soothing solo sounds himself, this 20 minute extended player represents Kaidi at his most relaxed, introspective and subtly euphoric. Ranging from the lounge-licking organ-massaging opener "Treacle Manifestations" to the Innervisions-era Wonder fusion frenzy "Shims", this - like everything he's done - is work of pure art. Essential.

Mister Seahorse (5:01)

Review: Kaidi Tatham's busted beats and jazzy house licks have been favourites of ours for donkey's years. The man released a heap of material alongside the mighty Dego back in the early 2000's, and he's still putting out some utter fire in this day and age. Back on Dego's on 2000Black, Kaidi storms though with the bubbly acoustics and jazzy beats of "The Extrovert City", a tune that would have gone down like a nuclear bomb back at the mythical Dingwall's in Camden. "Mister Seahorse" is something else entirely; a tune with a slow, laid-back pace, stoned-out bass tones, and some of that classic Kaidi jazz magic that we adore. A monumental EP, and one which'll surely be a favourite among the Sound Signature fanatics. Recommended.

Review: Freedom School's DJ Series of dancefloor-minded 12" singles has previously showcased material from Eric Lau Commissioner and Rick Wilhite. This time round, killer keys-man Kaidi Tatham is at the controls. The legendary West London producer begins in confident mood, lacing his usual jazz-funk keys over a rock-solid electronic bassline, fluttering synths and head-nodding hip-hop beats on "Two Tens Madam". The hazy, laid-back jazz-funk feel is amplified on "The Moons Falling", with Tatham delivering bouncy organ stabs, jazzy piano flourishes and winding synth lines. Arguably the strongest of the lot, though, is closer "Not A Thinkage Of Links", which sits somewhere between bass-heavy Afro-house, Idjut Boys style dub disco, and Kyoto Jazz Massive-esque nu-jazz.

Review: 12 Senses has been described by Kaidi Tatham as a, "love project". It grew organically out of the West London legend's now annual appearances at the Copenhagen jazz festival alongside friend Peter Stenbaek and some of Denmark's most talented jazz musicians. Here he's gathered the clan for a debut EP rippling with rich musicality and sun-kissed positivity. Opener "Touch" brilliantly joins the dots between warm and loved-up jazz-funk and Tatham's broken beat roots, while life is a bolder and more spacey take on early '80s jazz-funk that sounds like Bugz In The Attic covering classic Herbie Hancock. Turn to the flipside for the slow, fluid and leisurely vibes of "Movement", which is then given a jazz-funk-fired instrumental hip-hop revision by Tatham himself.
