The Offering
Cat: CHESTIKAL 001. Rel: 17 Apr 18

The Offering (4:23)
Dhyana (4:48)
Review: Chestplate and Artikal = Chestikal. If that doesn't already grab your attention then the fact that it's Distance and J:Kenzo on two massive collabos and the tunes are every bit as smoking, spacious and sick as you'd like them to be most certainly will. "The Offering" is a pure swaggering jam with rasping, distorted basslines striking through anything and everything in their wake. "Dhyana" offers sublime contrast with a much deeper, smokier blend of mystical atmospheres, roomy drums and an eerie eastern call that will have your skin up in so many goosebumps you might just grow feathers. Big up your chestikals.

Rawz (5:05)
Typhoon (3:47)
Review: Forever flipping through the tempos and the styles, Artikal bossman and all-round legend J:Kenzo has the honour of being the launch artist on Alternate Recordings - a brand new label from longstanding Bristol party crew. Hot on the heels of his Metalheadz release, Kenzo keeps things d&b with both of these raffish, rugged cuts. 'RawZ' bashes and bumps in all the right places, aided by shimmering percussion and a sweet vocal stab placed at all the right moments. It's backed up by the sultry, sexy 'Typhoon' that flexes on a halftime groove for most of the track and features a smouldering vocal you'll instantly recognise. Stunning.

Drum & Bass / Jungle
ZegaFunk (7:16)
Tiger Moth (7:02)
Kalibrate (4:57)
An Uncharted Vision (4:55)
Review: J:Kenzo is known more as a dubstep pioneer, but it's always refreshing to hear producers such as him break away from their pre-established style - in this case, the revolutionary sound is drum n' bass. 'Zegafunk' locks in four new heaters for Metalheadz (it's his debut for the legendary drum n' bass label), establishing a no-nonsense throwback to the earliest incarnations of jump-up and techstep, only repackaged for the present day. In the words of Metalheadz, there's a real classic feel to it, with the unendingly dystopian and robotic sound of late 90s drum n' bass shining through; 'Tiger Moth' and 'Kalibrate' are cases in point, with conveying moods of unswung menace and malicious awe.

Deep Dubstep
Traverse (4:09)
Deuce (3:58)
Review: Sometime Tempa family member J:Kenzo made his first appearance on ZamZam Sounds three years ago, aligning his hazy trademark sound with the label's next-generation dub ethos via the echoing deep dubstep brilliance of 'Kingston Hot' and 'Concrete Jungle'. This belated follow-up is, perhaps surprisingly, far more forthright, with 'Traverse' offering an energetic, low-slung mix of post-steppers dancefloor drums, layered tribal style hand percussion, deep sub-bass, hot-stepping dubstep breaks and trippy, echoing noises. The fun continues on the flip, where the Kent-born producer brilliantly blurs the boundary between two-step, deep dubstep and the squeezable sonics of dub techno.

Like A Hawk (Boylan remix)
Deadbull (Mani Festo remix)
Narky (MYTHM remix)
Desired State (Unkey remix)
Review: J Kenzo's music continues to get remixed by a wide of top talents on this ongoing series from French label Artikal Music. Starting off this one is 'Like A Hawk' (Boylan remix) with its tortured synths and crashing hits all heighten by the vocals delivered with a nasty snarl. Mani Festo then steps up with a remix of 'Deadbull' that is all bleeps and squeaks and broken techno beats while MYTHM slows things down to a predatory crawl with fizzing electronics and earth-shuddering bass. The closer from Unkey is a sparse, unsettling dubstep lurcher for the small hours.

All In (Coco Bryce remix) (5:30)
Broken Dreams (Specialist X remix) (6:53)
Review: French label Artikal Music revisits J Kenzo's work with a couple of fresh remixes from it by a couple of cutting edge drum & bass artists. Coco Bryce is a firm favourite here and he flips 'All In' into a rugged rhythm that is softened by the silky bass and synths. It is both physical yet emotional and that duality is sure to lead to plenty of high profile plays. On the flip side is Specialist X who works his magic on 'Broken Dreams.' This one is a more heads down and dark number for the dead of night, with menacing and stepping drums and sci-fi sound design. This is the first of what will be a series of remix EPs and we're already looking forward to the next one.

Astral Traveller (5:04)
Silentium (Path Of Tranquility) (5:27)
Review: Man like Kenzo eases into 2022 with a trip down the path of tranquillity on 'Karthaus'. Stunning dubwise flavours, very measured and calm, it's Kenzo at his deepest and most introspective. Elsewhere we roll up our sleeves and get the hammers on 'Solar Return' while 'Astral Traveller' brings heavy shades of cosmic funk thanks to a subtly mutating bassline and strange alien bleeps. Finally we hit our destination with 'Silentium'. Part film score, part futurism, all emotion, Kenzo wraps up the EP in a heavy meditative state... Leaving us refreshed and ready for the year ahead. Big up the Artikal massive.

Ruffhouse VIP 1 (5:40)
Ruffhouse VIP 2 (5:38)
Review: J:Kenzo is Jay Fairbrass, a DJ/Producer from Kent, that many followers of Artikal Music would be well familiar with, in addition to releases on 31 Records, Infernal Sounds and Tempa. He's back with an self-released one here titled Ruffhouse VIP. The first version on side A is deeply hypnotic and dub-laden tackle done proper. More underground sound awaits on the flip, with the second version featuring more meditative rhythms and immersive bass frequencies transmitted in typically heady fashion.

Token Image (7:11)
Starseed 47 (5:50)
Review: Master of space in more ways than one, dub cadet Kenzo takes us to the stars and back on his long-awaited sophomore album "Taygeta Code". Now fully immersed in both jungle and 140 worlds, with a sound much less bounded with any one genre, it's much less of a follow up to his self-titled 2012 debut LP and much more of a completely new trip. Leaping from idea to idea, one moment we're swimming in the oceanic emotions with Lelijveld on "Broken Dreams", the next we're being bounced between the bleeps on the brutal sci-fi funk of "Deadbull". Elsewhere Navi joins the fray on the bulldozing, grunt-bass stomper "Narky", "Token Image" gets fizzy on the percussion with a great sense of layered momentum while "Starseed 47" brings us back home with the deep dub J:Kenzo first properly made his name with. Roomy, often gloomy, always heavy and full surprises. Follow the code.

Saule - "Cure Dem" (J Kenzo remix) (4:43)
Shijima's Revenge (6:11)
Review: J:Kenzo strikes us down with pure bass weight once again, this time on Infernal Sounds with an almighty remix of San Francisco's Saule's ploughman stepper "Cure Dem". Adding an orchestral twist to those murderous stabs, this remix doesn't so much as cure but completely blazes every possible inch of your skin. Flip for an escapade of more ominous proportions as "Shijima's Revenge" takes us deep into Japanese legend with a powerful droning bass and a march-like groove that will have you trooping into the shadiest of graveyards. Absolute murderation.

Review: Taking a savage bite out of 2018 before January is even out, Artikal don J:Kenzo strides forth with two show-stopping cuts. "Shark Eye" has all the killer instinct coded deep into sprung drums and restrained but ominous bass growls. "Asutoraru" on the flip drives with more of an upbeat feel thanks to its rolling percussion, staccato riff and pneumatic, soul-flattening kicks. We're going to need a bigger sub.

Sykura/Assemble

Drum & Bass / Jungle
Sykura (6:09)
Assemble (5:19)
Review: Jay Fairbrass aka J. Kenzo has had a steady succession of great releases on his own, Kent based Soul Shakerz imprint and Artikal, which he runs with Mosaix. Not to mention several EPs and an album for dubstep pioneers Tempa in addition to appearing on d:Bridge's Exit and Roska's Kicks and Snares. "Sykura" is by now one of several releases thus far for Doc Scott's respected 31 Records. The track's immaculately programmed breaks accompanying an almost cinematic and suspense filled atmosphere are reminiscent of classic Photek or Optical from the mid to late noughties. On the flip is "Assemble", a more straight ahead techstep stomper that attacks you head on with stealth measure; this one too is reminiscent of classic sounds: in this case Ed Rush & Optical.

Zbantu Shake (4:09)
Review: Hello is the serious burns unit? Yes it's Juno Records here, we've been in direct contact with J Kenzo's latest Artikal 12" and have lost several layers of skin. Get an ambulance right away you say? Just after we've listened to this a few more times... "Battlefield" twitches a ruddy sub that bounces around beneath big system horns and a strident energetic drum groove. "Zbantu Shake" is a much more stripped back stepper that's all wooden kicks, trippy flute flurries and ladles of thick treacle subs. Soundboy killing material.

Review: Artikal head honcho and all-round deep maestro flares up the tempo and dusts off his jungle spectacles for this stunning Cosmic Bridge double-tracker. Flipping between classical amen weaving and thundering halftime stomps, "Stakka" is Kenzo at his naughtiest and heaviest. "Alight" sees him flicking through his Moving Shadow collection with icy synths before dropping into a straight-up stop/start break jam that wouldn't have gone amiss on No U-Turn back in the day. Serious jungle.

Revan (4:12)
Review: Following his heavyweight EP on Thirtyone, J:Kenzo continues the D&B flavour on his own Artikal imprint. While the jungle he peddled on Doc Scott's imprint was slippery and minimal, "Intalek" is much more rugged and dense with rattling breaks saturated in pulsating bass. Meanwhile on the B "Revan" takes us back to Kenzo's roots with a rolling, percussion-heavy dubstep jam that rolls with tonnes of energy. A really strong release to conclude a great year for Artikal.

Rum Punch (4:50)
Airwalk (5:36)
Review: Usually found on the 140 side of the spectrum dub demonstrator Kenzo steps over to Doc Scott's ThirtyOne for some serious stripped back jungle business. "Rum Punch" is a straight up roller with a wasps nest bassline and barbed wire two-step. "Airwalk" nods towards the Ruffhouse or Clarity style of minimalism with an almost dancehall dynamic to its sparse drums. Finally "Durge" drops the tempo a tenner for a really wonked-out halftime bass jam that rips into some incredible amen splashes midway. Applying everything you love about his dub science to D&B, Kenzo's just opened up a whole new book... And we can't put it down.

TVR
Review: Fresh from his excursions with Jubei on Metalheadz, J Kenzo returns with two more distinctive sonic spells. "Magneto" is a rumbling halfstep behemoth; slurring bass, a dark pitched down vocal loop and a savage low-end groove, it reminds us why we all fell in love with Tempa sound in the first place. "TVR" is even more interesting; rolling on a low-swung, shuffling breakbeat, there's a techno sensibility to the loops and incessant groove. Carrying all the classic J Kenzo hallmarks while pushing him in a wholly new direction, this will go down as a pivotal release for Kenzo.

Bloodlines
Review: The first new material since his self-titled album in September 2012, Kenzo goes all-in on this immense Tempa four-tracker. "Cause & Effect" is a slurring, slo-mo psychedelic workout with eerie, ominous pads and anvil-like beats. "Ricochet" lives up to its name with a tight ping-pong polyrhythm that quickly builds momentum before taking a deep, steady breath on the halfsteps. "Enter Valarak" is the darkest cut of the pack thanks to swaggering dragon tempo that blows smoke out of its clogged bass nostrils. "Bloodlines" completes the set with tight weaves of percussion, off-kilter loops and trippy dubbed out jungle bleeps. Tracing dubstep's bloodlines back to its soundsystem roots, Kenzo truly deserves the 'classicist' title the press have recently given him.

Review: Kent-based producer J Kenzo has yet to reach dubstep's top table, but on the evidence of this excellent debut album for scene stalwarts Tempa, he'll soon be dining with the big boys. His rhythms are tough and crisp and his basslines weighty, while there's enough invention to interest to those who prefer their dubstep deeper. It's largely a floor-friendly collection, tempering the paranoid moodiness that accompanies much high-grade dubstep, but there are moments of intense beauty, too. Check, for example, the atmospheric vocal cut "Eyes Wide Shut" or the clandestine "Statement of Intent"; both have the makings of future classics.

Review: A real fusion of many different styles, and perfectly named to boot, Tropic Thunda is a subtle and well-crafted mix of soca and dubstep beats. Sparse but full of energy and vitality, it's a classy release from J Kenzo (a man who's currently getting support from Caspa and N-Type amongst many others). Also out is Counteraction, which has rolling congas and some off-kilter snares, as well as rising synth stabs that set the beat alive. Both tunes are smart, funky and very cool - miss out on this at your peril.

Straight Defeat (Caspa remix) (4:20)
Straight Defeat (Jubei remix) (5:11)
Straight Defeat (instrumental) (5:36)
Review: Released last year, Kenzo and Collinjah laid down serious gully gospel on "Straight Defeat". Now time for two industrial strength remixes: a recently reinvigorated Caspa gets his war drum out for a greasy mechanical roller while Jubei ups the tempo ante with a tribal stepper that strips back the elements and lets Collinjah's vocal take the centre stage they require. Just like Kenzo's original, both versions mean serious dancefloor business.

Review: Here is the first of two 12" samplers preceding The Compilation, a self explanatory label collection from the Artikal crew which lays down a tasty marker for what to expect when the full 14 track release drops later this month. Naturally label co-founder J Kenzo leads the way with "Straight Defeat" which features the bubbling rap flow of Collinjah, but there's plenty more to sink your teeth into. TMSV - "Sprite" (4:23)
Compa - "Lampin" (3:55)
Argo - "That Fresh" (5:46)
Review: As you'd perhaps expect, the second part (or "plate") of Artikal's The Architects Volume 1 compilation is full of deep and weighty treats. Fittingly, label boss J:Kenzo steps up first, offering Resound the chance to turn "Intallek" into a crunchy, snare-heavy revivalist jungle treat. TMSV take an altogether deeper route on "Sprite", peppering a tribal dubstep rhythm and moody sub-bass line with clandestine electronics and foreboding effects, before Compa slows things down via the melancholic bass science of "Lampin". Arguably best of all, though, is Argo's pleasingly melodious deep dubstep roller "That Fresh", which fittingly rounds off a fine EP.

Roska - "Without It" (Terror Danjah Harddrivin' remix)
J Kenzo - "Let It Move"
Tickles - "Da Growier"
Review: Some previously digital only releases from Roska's Kicks & Snares imprint get a well deserved vinyl pressing on the great 12" release. On the A-Side is Terror Danjah's remix of Roska's "Without It", the original's restrained approach, with its simple snare pattern and dramatic strings, into somewhat darker places, replacing the original's UK funky template with a jungle vibe, complete with twisting, acidic bassline. On the B-Side, J Kenzo's "Let It Move" has a positively electro-breaks feel, with the stretched-wide synths punching away over heavily compressed beats. Finally, Tickles' incendiary track "Da Growler" is built around a particularly low and rumbling bass drone and pitched down vocal snippets which gives the track its name, whilst delicate percussion gives it a light, swinging rhythm. A fine package from one of UK Funky's most exciting labels.

Review:  Tempa turns back time while staring defiantly into the future: Youngsta takes Truth's summer 2013 thunder-jam "Devil's Hands" and turbo-charges it with such a steppy dynamic you can see the speed lines firing from your speaker. Next up, take J Kenzo's 2012 minimal blunderbuss and introduce an added synth texture and a slinkier groove to the bass. Both fine examples of how to smash a remix while paying respect to the strong originals.
