Review: In addition to both Black Opal releases arriving this week, mother label Opal Tapes also dropped two vinyl transmissions; the first of which is Holo Earth from HOLOVR. Fans of the label will be familiar with HOLOVR, aka London-based musician Jimmy Billingham who first appeared on Opal Tapes with the Lunar Lake cassette last year and went on to contribute to their recent Cambiare digital compilation. After numerous cassette releases under his various guises, this eight track LP is Billingham's debut on the vinyl format and sounds like some of his most haunting compositions so far under the HOLOVR guise. Fans of Lee Gamble on PAN should really check this!

  1. Into Light (11:02)
  2. Apparent Motion (9:43)
  3. Temporary, Autonomous (8:37)
  4. Involution (11:11)
Review: British ambient producer Jimmy Billingham aka HOLOVR has previously flaunted his wares on respected imprints such as Opal Tapes, Firecracker and Indole where he presented the brilliant Line Of Flight LP last year. "Into Light" or "Apparent Motion" could pass for The Orb or even CTI's early ambient electronica experiments, both awash in soothing analogue pads, hypnotic bleeps and faint 303 acid flourishes. On the flip, there's more quality to be found on the cosmic journey "Involution" that's full of vintage analogue synth flair, screeching and squealing all over the place; it's pure bliss.

Review: Here's a pleasant surprise! Jimmy Billingham bringing his distinct brand of drawn out, emotive acid as HOLOVR to the good ship Firecracker. HOLOVR has largely been restricted to the digital or cassette format, yet last year's Line Of Flight LP for Billingham's own Indole label proved what we always thought; it's music you want to hear booming out of a pair of turntables in a club! The Trace Realm EP, another thing of visual beauty thanks to House of Traps, continues in this vein with opening track "Transient Field" a real highlight along with the spoken word-blessed lysergic drift of closing track "Corporeal Crust (Cthelll Core)".

  1. Split Infinity (8:04)
  2. Hillraiser (7:37)
Review: Over the last couple of years, HOLOVR producer Jimmy Billingham has carved out his own retro-futurist niche. While heavily influenced by the psychedelic acid lines of Rephlex style "braindance" releases, classic IDM and spacey early '90s ambient, his productions for the likes of Happy Skull and Firecracker have a vibe and sound all of their own. This instinctive fusion of spacey, head-in-the-clouds elements can be heard on the wonderful "Split Infinity", where a soulful female vocal samples weaves its way in and out of dreamy chords, bubbling electronics and snappy, broken techno beats. On the similarly inclined "Hillraiser", Billingham reaches for the 1990 bleeps and alien melodies, allowing them to rise and fall around a rolling, jazzy beat pattern. Stunning stuff... as usual.

  1. Melody 4 Your Mind (7:42)
  2. You Belong 2 (8:49)
Review: Jimmy Billingham's HOLOVR project has grown into something of an essential listen for us these days, and we're not shy to say that we think this guy is one of the few remaining artists who are truly at the 'outside' of the house music spectrum. Many attempt to sound loose, explorative and lo-fi, but this guy has just cracked the formula. After an excellent string of appearances for the likes of Opal Tapes and, more recently, House Of Traps' Firecracker Recordings stable, the artist joins Bristol's Happy Skull imprint with two supremely ethereal slices of kinetic electronic waves. "Melody 4 Your Mind" is not all ambience, however, and it's flurry of melodies are actually locked into a tight percussive roll thanks to those bass drums travelling way down below; it's an endlessly wondrous affair, and one with a distinctive capability to appeal across the dance world. On the B-side, things get wilder with "You Belong 2", a buzzing, acid-laden dance abstraction that takes the whole acid house strain to a new and untrodden sort of territory. Recommended!

  1. Matthewdavid's Mindflight - "Sonos"
  2. HOLOVR - "Horizon Dub"
  3. HOLOVR - "Mind Movement"
  4. HOLOVR - "Mycomorph"
Review: The Schleissen series goes from strength to strength on Emotional Response, inviting another two esteemed luminaries in the field of ambience to indulge themselves on a long side of wax. Matthewdavid is a welcome addition to the series - the West Coast champion has been operating in all kinds of unusual realms for a long time - and he comes to this release with a new project entitled Mindflight. The resulting track "Sonos' loops and folds heavy washes of drone and feedback in a thoroughly stimulating bath of harmony. Firecracker affiliate HOLOVR meanwhile presents three different musings on the dynamics of vintage UK techno, all crooked beat formations and luscious synth strokes gazing into the future.

  1. Tagwell Woods - "The Bench On The Hill" (8:20)
  2. Castel - "Silverline" (4:40)
  3. Mihail P - "At The Worlds End" (5:09)
  4. HOLOVR - "An Expanded State Of Consciousness" (5:35)
Review: Following marvelous turns from the likes of Perseus Traxx and Stephen Lopkin, Distant Worlds returns with this heavy slice of emotional synthwave from a strong cast of characters. Tagwell Woods heads up the pack with some lingering, poignant leads and tasteful 303 wriggles, before Castel drops some seriously wiggy trance-out sounds into the mix (all still very much on the sensitive tip, of course). Mihail P returns to Distant Worlds to open up the B-side with a slow, break fuelled funk and soul-stirring melancholy, before the always-excellent HOLOVR completes the set with a distinctive and delicate romp through finely sculpted electronica.
