Review: Following dope documents on the likes of P&D and Midnight Shift, the original Jackmaster Gene Hunt continues his rich vein of form. This time on Croatian label Burek. With its lyrics alone "Deep House Thang" should resonate with every dancefloor but the Amp Fiddler style soul and soft broken groove will most certainly seal the deal. Flip for more loose-limbed party funk as "Get Down" adds a little gospel touch to the vibe while "The Message" taps right back to the Chicago source. Timeless.

Review: Gene Hunt is one of the few producers from the original wave of Trax Records signees that still flies the flag for Chicago house with as much gusto as when he started. This is his second trip out on Inner Shift Music, and it finds the US house veteran on impeccable form. "Kayla Dream" is a light, airy jacker defined by amorphous synth washes that match the mellow mood of the label. "Distant Voyage" is a truly standout track though, dealing in crooked rhythmic structures and channelling the techno side of Hunt's muse. "Open Up Your Eyes" maintains the introspective mood, but this time welcomes some soulful vocal turns into the adventurous, machine-powered landscape.

Review: Gene Hunt's 1989 debut 12", Living In A Land, has long been something of a slept-on classic; a brilliant piece of original Chicago acid that seems to have been overlooked by crate diggers. Here it gets a deserved repress, with bold new mastering to enhance the rugged nature of Hunt's mind-altering acid lines and booming drum machine rhythms. It's the title track that's naturally the star attraction, with Hunt gently heightening the intensity throughout via jackin' 303 lines, trippy electronics and Armando style fills. Just like the original pressing, the flipside boasts two untitled workouts, both of which boast the kind of manual 303-abuse that marks out the greatest original Chicago acid tracks.

Review: Having debuted on L.A. Club Resource earlier this year with the roughshod Pandemonium 12?, Chicago house legend Gene Hunt is back on the increasingly cultish label overseen by Delroy Edwards with two slabs of archival material. Little to do with the Curtis Mayfield classic of (nearly) the same name, "Freddy's Dead" instead seeks inspiration from Hollywood horror icon Freddy Krueger, taking ample sample usage of Freddy's Dead: The Final Nightmare. Originally released as part of the Gene Hunt Classics double pack issued on Dust Traxx in 1999, it sounds right at home on LACR and is complemented by "Bong", an unreleased beat track from Hunt's archive of late '80s recordings.

Review: The inclusion of veteran Chicago producer Gene Hunt on Delroy Edwards' L.A. Club Resource label may initially seem like a bit of a strange move, but on listening to Pandemonium it's easy to see the connection between Edwards' own raw, grotty, overdriven take on house and techno and the two productions from Hunt on this 12". Both sound like the most primitive of jack tracks, with the title cut featuring a queasy synth line which careers in and out of sight amongst some satisfyingly crunchy drums, and "Jackzone" providing an even more disorientating take on house music. For fans of L.I.E.S. and L.A. Club Resource this comes highly recommended!

Review: Rush Hour continues its fine run of releases on a Detroit/Chicago tip with Gene Hunt's Cancemnini EP. A veteran from the Windy City, Mr Hunt (sadly not the same Gene Hunt who plies his trade as a fearsome detective in the Life On Mars TV series) certainly knows his way around a studio. All four tracks on this EP are produced with intricate poise, from the pitch perfect kick on "Gyro Jazz" to the deft use of keys on "Xylo Maze".
