Future Retro Vol 1
Future Retro Vol 1 (12" + stickers)
Cat: WWM 002. Rel: 09 Aug 17
  1. Derek Carr - "Experience Experiments" (6:34)
  2. Rob Belleville - "Reflecting Skies" (5:51)
  3. Mihail P - "Moon Chaser" (5:11)
  4. Erell Ranson - "The Lost Paradise" (6:23)
Review: Riccardo Piazza and Re-Up's WWM builds on its well-received launch release from Reesdale Rise with its first V/A EP. Living up to its title immaculately Future Retro is a space-aged soul trip from established and breaking talents alike. Irish veteran Derek Carr takes us back to early UR joints with his body-moving analogue groove, Rob Belleville continues where he left us on Ante and Ibiza Boys with rippling filtered synths, newcomer Mihail P gets down to the 808 nitty gritty with a bouncing ball acid funk breaker while Erell Ranson closes the show on a hazy, dream-like weave of melting synths. Welcome to the future.

  2. Who You Are & Who You Want To Be (6:38)
  3. Unthinkable Destiny (6:59)
  4. Nothing To Do With Me (4:47)
Review: 2019 is proving to be a busy year for French deep techno producer Erell Ranson. With the Artificial Paradise 12" freshly dropped on Distant Worlds, he also steps up to Subconscious Algorithms to join Derek Carr and Norken in exploring genuinely interesting avenues of machine soul. There's an electro flavour to "Sensitive Person", and a subtle house pulse to "Who You Are & Who You Want To Be," while "Unthinkable Destiny" snaps with a sharply rendered rhythm underneath illustrious synth shapes. "Nothing To Do With Me" finishes the EP in a consistent style, making this a complete package with four refined jams for those who like their techno to hit in the solar plexus.

Artificial Paradise
Artificial Paradise (140 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: DWT 006. Rel: 15 Apr 19
  1. After The Rain (6:04)
  2. Artificial Paradise (5:37)
  3. No Such Thing (6:48)
  4. Scattered Minds (5:27)
Review: Erell Ranson has got some serious credentials behind him. The French producer has been releasing music for over ten years, landing on a range of underground labels that more recently include Barba Records, Subwax Excursions and Nightflight. On this release for UK label Distant Worlds, he matches the vibe of label mates John Shima, Derek Carr et al with a gorgeous set of emotive, yearning techno reflections that call to mind the early UK scene pioneered by B12, Baby Ford and others. This is thoughtful, heartfelt stuff that works both as distinctive dancefloor material as well as intimate home listening fare.

Hand In Hand (remixes) (DJ Normal, Pariah, & SW)
  1. If We Never Try (DJ Normal 4 Sealife Safari mixX)
  2. Hand In Hand (Pariah remix)
  3. If We Never Try (SW Amnesia interpretation)
Review: Kalahari Oyster Cult have been thumbing through their back catalogue and return to a past gem for some renewed attention. 2017 saw the release of Erell Ranson's Hand in Hand, a quintet of beautifully crafted machine music. Two tracks have been chosen from the EP and remixed with stunning results.

First up is Dj Normal 4's "Sealife Safari MixX" of "If We Never Try." The sweet, shimmering melody of the original, the bubbling bass and subtle notes, are transformed in this remake. Silvery chords morph into bold and daring new forms under the tutelage of Tim Schumacher, neon streaked patterns coalescing with broken and cracked percussion for a superbly uplifting piece.

Pariah follows with his rework of "Hand in Hand." A deep dreamscape intricately woven with heady notes, birdsong and endless possibilities.

The final odyssey comes care of SW (Stefan Wust) of SUED fame. The Berlin based musician delivers his reimagined idea of "If We Never Try" with Ranson's version being washed over by lapping lines and gentle currents to create a smooth rounded finale. A trio of unique perspectives from three true talents of electronic music.

  2. Digital Dream
  3. The Color Of The Empty Sky
  4. Sleeping Beauty
Review: According to Dan Curtin, this is a very accomplished release from such a new producer. This work shows history and knowledge of the music that inspired most of what we listen to today. Every track demonstrates a rich and thick production that perfectly compliments the musical contents. Ranson definitely pays homage to the sound of the Detroit originators but still displays his own direction and identity. This is Future soul with emotion unbound to our planet. So far full support from Dan Curtin, Fabrice Lig and Funk D'Void!

Deepsounds Five
  1. Sauco & Prakash - "Relax" (6:10)
  2. Erell Ranson - "Beauty Of Sadness" (6:08)
  3. Frankie Soukal - "Polaroid" (5:07)
  4. Tominori Hosoya - "2 Years Later" (7:26)
Review: Remarkably, 18 years has past since Red Ember Records offered up the first installment in their "Deepsounds" series of multi-artist EPs. Volume five kicks off with "Relax", a warm and fuzzy chunk of head-nodding deep house hypnotism by Sauco and Prakash that boasts some raw analogue bass and oven-hot stabs. Erell Ranson goes even jazzier, deeper and more melodious on the superb "Beauty Of Sadness", while Frankie Soukal's "Polaroid" wraps spacey, dubbed-out and delay laden chords around a chunky groove. Arguably best of all though is Tominori Hosoya's luscious "2 Years Later", an ultra-deep, dreamy and positive cut that's twice as tactile as Play-Dough and infinitely tastier.
