Something's Going To Happen EP (B-STOCK)

Minimal/Tech House
Something's Going To Happen
Compute
Rhythm Activated
Project 3
Review: ***B-STOCK: Record has very light surface marks/smudges, but otherwise in perfect working condition***

Following up some great ones by Matthias, Alec Falconer and Z@p & Santiago Uribe, Tone Dropout main man Darren Woollard returns with a new release of old school techno workouts for London's Art Of Dark. Indeed, prepare to turn on, tune in and drop out to the early '90s influenced bleep 'n' bass experience of "Something's Going To Happen", hear the drummer get wicked on on the acid-washed breaks of "Compute'' while B side cut "Rhythm Activated" is exactly kind of wacky new rave fantasy you'd hear on the dancefloor at Hoppetosse or the Libertine label parties in Berlin. More wicked material by an underrated legend - tip!

Dawl - "Nebulon" (6:16)
Daif - "Soberman" (7:35)
Ascot/WW - "FIFA 98" (4:56)
Alphonse - "Direct Transient" (7:07)
Jamie Blanco - "Acid Damage" (5:47)
ToneBreak 3 (3:57)
Review: When it comes to revivalist rave music, no other label does it quite as well as Tone Dropout. Their multi-artist EPs are invariably excellent and this seventh edition once again hits the mark. Dawl kicks things off via the fizzing "bleep and breaks" business of "Nebulon", before Daif dishes up some sweaty breakbeats and mind-altering analogue bass. Ascot and WW join forces for the bleep-goes-breakdance bustle of "FIFA 98", Alphonse wraps twisted acid lines and outer-space chords around a hip-house breakbeat ("Direct Transient"), and Jamie Blanco gets intense with the help of a bunch of TB-303 acid lines and some suitably jacking drums. In other words, it's another killer collection of saucer-eyed assaults on the senses.

Dawl - "Andromeda" (5:23)
Escape Earth - "Impact Event" (4:59)
Kiddmisha - "Retrodance" (4:41)
The He-Men - "Evolution 1" (6:16)
Marino - "Rave Alarm" (6:44)
Review: ***B-STOCK: Large tear to the bottom left corner of the outer sleeve, slight surface marks on record, otherwise in perfect working order***

When it comes to retro-futurist, analogue-rich gems inspired by turn-of-the-'90s electronic music, there's no more reliable outlet than Tone Dropout. The label's latest drop - their tenth multi-artist extravagana - is once again packed with cuts that sound like they could have been made in 1990 or '91. Boss man Dawl kicks things off with a cracking fusion of punchy electro and bleep & bass ('Into Andromeda'), before Escape Earth deliver a dash of acid-flecked breakbeat hardcore ('Impact Event') and Kiddmisha explores acid-electro pastures on 'Retrodance'. The body popping fun continues apace on side B opener 'Evolution 1', a punchy electro club cut from The He Men - before Marino draws things to a close via the rumbling bass, skittish breakbeats and moody chords of 'Rave Alarm'.

Dawl & Sween - "Laser Guided" (6:02)
Skywave Transmissions - "Warehouse 101" (with XOTR) (6:14)

Daif - "Mysterious Freakin History" (6:13)
Ascot/WW - "Alien Vision" (6:19)
Review: ***B-STOCK: Sleeve damaged but otherwise in excellent condition***

Saucer-eyed rave revivalists Tone Dropout can usually be relied upon to deliver the goods, especially if you're looking for sweaty, energy-packed slabs of warehouse ready techno, acid and electro. The label's latest missive is packed to the rafters with such giddy and forthright fare, to the bleeping, mind-altering insanity of Dawl & Sween's acid-fired throb-job "Laser Guided", to the "Bleep and Breaks" pressure of Samuel Padden's bustling "Quad Damage", to the stripped-back machine techno heaviness of Daif's similarly bleepy "Mysterious Freakin History". Elsewhere, the Ascot/WW track sits somewhere between early breakbeat hardcore and ambient techno, while Skywave Transmission v XOTR's "Warehouse 101" lives up to its name. Serious heat!

Bonus Tonebreak (2:51)
Review: For the latest volume in their on-going multi-artist EP series, eccentric London label Tone Dropout has gathered together a fresh batch of cuts from their closest collaborators. To kick things off, the He Men (AKA Oki Noki and Sween) combine the deep space sounds of Detroit techno and mind-altering acid lines of Phuture with the rubbery beats of New York deep house. Dawl opts for brain-melting analogue bass and wild machine bleeps on mutant jack-track "Asylum", while Corporeal Face's "Permo" is probably best described as "hardcore clonk". Eslewhere, you'll find two chunks of Frankie Bones style breakbeat techno heaviness that wouldn't have sounded out of place rushing from the speakers at an early '90s Sunrise rave.
