Review: During the mid-to-late 1990s, the Mo Wax-affiliated DJ Krush was one of the greatest purveyors of expansive, atmospheric and musically intricate instrumental hip-hop. Over the last decade, though, he's almost disappeared from view, making Butterfly Effect - his first album since 2004 - something of a treat for fans. Predictably, it's musically expansive, blending his dusty, head-nodding and occasionally punchy hip-hop rhythms with impressively emotion-rich, classical and jazz influenced music. The breadth and diversity of instrumentation and voices on offer - think twinkling pianos, lush orchestration, crunchy guitars, snaking saxophones, becalmed harps, dreamy freestyle vocals and blazed raps - is particularly impressive, and proves that Krush hasn't lost his touch.

Review: Krush's eighth - and last - album Jaku is up there with Endtroducing and Donuts in terms of seminal, influential and forward-thinking beat longer players. 10 years since its release and it still sounds as timeless, unique and exciting as it did in 2004. The slick licks of a young Mr Lif on "Nosferatu", the post-apocalyptic tension of "Univearth" the sludgy, swampy cosmic hip-hop of the Aesop Rock-featured "Kill Switch" and the unashamed sax sex of "Slit Of Cloud"..... Do we need to go on? Limited edition, 180g transparent vinyl; even if you already have this in your collection this is a very, very appealing investment.

Review: Here's an all-time classic to kick back and roll a fat one to. 1996 was a landmark time for trip-hop and downtempo, and alongside DJ Shadow's Endtroducing came this silky smooth delight from Japanese turntablist maestro DJ Krush and jazz trumpeter Toshinori Kondo. Smoky beats and laconic chord licks form the perfect backdrop to Kondo's muted trumpet, and the mood just unfurls from the get-go in a brilliant reimagining of what lounge jazz could be in the fusion-fuelled 1990s. It's a benchmark which has been often imitated and rarely bettered, more than worthy of a remaster and repress on double vinyl.
