Review: Hamburg based Yul and Dabrink started their DJ Teamwork as Toolbox with residencies at techno and house clubs Phonodrome and Lounge in the middle nineties. Soon they achieved a strong reputation in Hamburg and topped their popularity through the success of their very special Selfmade gatherings. Engineer Yul with designer Dabrink promoted lovely organized parties in unusual locations or local venues. Their very well received DJ team merged passionate functional house with funky tech house for the floor. Also producing with similar musicians and different styles in electronic music for a few years now the DJ team evolved to a production team as Combi for the label Danced Records with producer Jörn Erkau aka Lucky Loop (Lounge Records). And now Combi proudly present their housy side on Wizkidz saying "Hold The Line".

  1. Don't Stop Dance
  2. Swamp Googie Crisco
Review: Eric Duncan's C.O.M.B.I shaped journey through the alphabet of discotheque arrives at inter-section O & P for two suitably obscure cuts from the Rub n Tug man. Leading the way is "Don't Stop Dance" lifted straight from the late 70s NY disco underground and displaying all the fine edit trademarks you'd expect from Dr Dunks - extended breaks, slick sliced and diced vocals and neatly embellished rumbling rhythms. On the flip the brilliantly named "Swamp Googie Crisco" slips into Dirty South funk rock mode - coming across as like The Kings Of Leon eschewing the stadium rock millions for some pick heavy Roadhouse boogie.

  1. W - I'm Feeling Excite
  2. X - Loving Ecstasy
Review: The C.O.M.B.I. shaped journey through the disco alphabet assisted by the well respected curatorial hands of a certain Eric 'Dr Dunks' Duncan reaches letters W & Y and thus the penultimate point before all good things come to an end. Side W is classic strutting vocal disco (is that a high pitched lead male or female vocal?) whilst Side Y opts for a funkier groove with some killer flanging from Mr Duncan! It's been a killer journey through the archives of obscure disco of alleged Japanese origin since the C.O.M.B.I. series commenced way back in 2007 and contemporary Disco DJs will need to look elsewhere for their secret weapons soon.

  2. R
Review: It's round nine of Eric Dr Dunk Duncan's C.OM.B.I. edits and one must wonder what's gonna happen after X & Y? Putting aside such questions of disco existentialism, Q & R bang like you'd expect, digging up more curios from Japan and dusting them down with aplomb. "Snakes Wine" is a furiously uptempo afro disco number, dominated by the laser shots of over the top Moroder synths but driven by gliding bass lines and slick guitar riffs. A chance to wipe sweat from brow is offered on the flip with the less thunderous "Looking A Star", a twilight slow jam which bubbles with seductive intent - just wait for those vocals to come through!
