Goodfoot EP (12" + free MP3 download code)
Cat: TTY 09. Rel: 21 Nov 12
Deep House
  1. Goodfoot (feat Didz & The Organ Grinder)
  2. 4AM Dub (feat The Organ Grinder)
  3. Feelings
  4. 3AM Dub
Review: Returning to Doc Daneeka's Ten Thousand Yen after a two year absence, Chesus delivers four tracks of throwback house with a contemporary twist. "Goodfoot" sees a diva vocal and hands in the air piano riff go hand in hand with snappy percussion with a rippling flex, while "4am Dub" and "3am Dub" offer subtly different combinations of heavy 909 kicks and deep organ chords. The standout track is perhaps "Feelings" delivering a Kerri Chandler style, dubbed out house cut with vocal manipulation from the contemporary bass school of thinking. One to file alongside Bicep for an impressively modern take on the 90s house revival.

Elevation (12")
Cat: 4LUX 1403. Rel: 24 Sep 14
Deep House
  1. Jump!
  2. Elevation
  3. Intergalactic Jam
  4. Bootsy's Nightmare
Review: Chesus seems to be in a happy place right now. Certainly, there's a confident and outgoing feel about his second outing for 4Lux under the Earl Jeffers alias. All four tracks feel like the product of enjoyable studio sessions, and almost bristle with celebratory release. "Jump", which recalls the disco-inspired bump of early '90s New York house whilst adding sturdier bottom end, leads the way. Following close behind is "Elevation", a carnival-friendly fusion of pounding percussion, snaking synths and booming bass. "Intergalactic Jam" is a warm and rich exercise in stargazing deep house, while the curious "Bootsy's Nightmare" is hard to pin down. Listen carefully, and you can hear influences from UK funky, UKG, kuduro and ultra-deep house.

Ruff Draft 06 (180 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: RUFFDRAFT 06. Rel: 27 Apr 15
Deep House
  1. Orbicular (6:49)
  2. WYW (6:26)
  3. Let It Happen (feat Owain K) (6:52)
Review: Paul Cottam's Ruff Draft label enjoyed a great first year in 2014, delivering white-hot material from the man himself, LK and Romansoff, amongst others. For the imprint's first missive of 2015, Cottam has recruited Cardiff-based rising star Chesus, who previously impressed via releases on Local Talk, 4 Lux and Catapult. There's naturally much to admire, from the acid-era electronics, delicate synth strings and shimmering chords of opener "Orbicular", to the DJ Gregory-ish stabs, wonky electronics and dense, organic-sounding percussion of "WYW". Bristol-based producer Owain K - best known for his hook-ups with Jamie Anderson on Dessous - lends a hand on "Let It Happen", a rather fine slice of warm, immersive, Balearic deep house goodness seemingly inspired by the Vangelis classic of the same name.

Audioporn (12")
Cat: LIT 001. Rel: 30 Aug 12
Deep House
  1. Chesus & Organ Grinder - "Audioporn"
  2. Organ Grinder - "Ampulate"
Review: Addison Groove producer Tony Williams adds label owner to his bustling CV with the launch of the Lost In Translation imprint which was apparently named in honour of his favourite cinematic opening scene. The label is inaugurated in limited, hand stamped vinyl fashion with a two track release from South Wales producer Chesus (part of the CRST clique) and the somewhat elusive Organ Grinder who slipped out a tasty twelve on Catapult last year. "Audioporn" lives up its name with a rather raunchy pitch shifted vocal sample doing the nasty with a guttural bassline and worm like acid lines, whilst "Ampulate" deftly swings between uplifting classicist house chord refrains and rowdy vocal led bass vibes.

Deep House
  1. CRST - "Monster Munch" (feat The Organ Grider)
  2. Chesus - "Newark"
  3. CRST - "Life"
  4. Chesus - "Special"
Review: South Welsh sound hounds CRST go toe-to-toe with their own Chesus on this ace quad-track EP for Swedish imprint Local Talk. Peppered with creatively manipulated and neatly trimmed classic house vocals while paying full attention to the jack factor, each cut oozes Chi-town panache and infectious grooves. Chesus flips the final switch for the beautiful swing-drenched finale "Special". Clearly studying in the same sample school as Sonic J, house flavours don't get much more timeless than this. Get munching.
