Review: It's easy to choke up when getting to grips with this latest long form from Galway's Brigid Mae Power. Not only does the Irish siren possess one of the most jaw-dropping voices we've encountered in some time, rendering her brand of soft country-folk heartbreakingly powerful, but she's also capable of capturing aspects of human emotion most of us would struggle to articulate in a thesis, let alone a few minutes of song. There are tales of self-preservation, memories of the revelatory realisation that emotional vulnerability and strength are not mutually exclusive, and rousing calls for freedom and self expression. Subjects tackled with lyrical sympathy, empathy and understanding, set to arrangements that have a habit of slowly but surely creeping into the conscience, immersing us in gentle harmonies until we are completely bewitched.
