Sound Phases EP
Sound Phases EP (140 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: SR 005. Rel: 25 Mar 19
Techno
  1. Infinite Possibility (5:27)
  2. Infinite Possibility (Saverio Celestri remix) (6:55)
  3. Let Me See (6:28)
  4. Phases (feat Eternauta) (6:46)
Review: One of the founders of Uaudio and Sperimentazioni Sonore, Battista has been bouncing his outsider house style around labels such as The Trilogy Tapes and Warm Sounds, sometimes solo and sometimes in tandem with likeminded souls EMG and John Swing. Now he parks up on Florida label SPORTS with some more crooked delights that ably demonstrate the creative potential still to be found in the house realm if you approach it with imagination. "Infinite Possibility" is a weird, jazzy cut that reaches into the cosmos, and it's utterly magnificent. Saverio Celestri does a marvelous job of remixing it too, turning out a smoky, Motor City indebted version. "Let Me See" may have a more forthright beat, but there's still enough individuality in the choice of chords and samples to make this a stand out house record.

  1. Track 1 (6:21)
  2. Aware (6:23)
  3. What Am I Supposed To Do Now? (6:27)
  4. Unification (6:37)
Review: Italian producer based in Berlin who runs Uaudio with Eternauta has affiliations with the LiveJam and Relative (via Sperimentazioni Sonore) crew, so you know what you're in for here. It's tough and dusty analogue house attacks at street level on the A side with "Track 1" a loopy and overdriven funky disco house cut. It sounds like DJ Sneak on PCP. Meanwhile "Aware" exercises a bit more restraint on this deep acid number, it seems, until the 808 kick comes in and stomps all over your ears. On the flip "What Am I Supposed To Do Now" follows in suit, a sample repeats that very refrain over a decayed and rust encrusted groove while closer "Unification" has some emotive pads trying to hypnotise you if not for the track's jagged and disjointed sense of swing trampling all over you in the process.

  1. Alive In Another Era
  2. Helps Ground Fighting
  3. Hype My Dick
  4. And His Space Travel
  5. Digging Back
Review: Warm Sounds have been steadily making inroads into the murky hardware production scene with releases from the likes of The Raw Interpreter and Lucretio, and their seventh release comes from the unheralded Berlin-based producer Battista. Coming from the same school of production as The Analogue Cops, the Energy Core EP sees Battista deliver a selection of five mangled machine tracks, from the flayed acid of "Alive In Another Era" and heaving hardware scrapes and broken ceramic rhythms of "Helps Ground Fighting" through the deeper, more classicist vibes of "And His Space Travel" and minimal wave stylings of "Digging Back". Limited copies as ever!

Techno
  1. From The Other Ground
  2. From The Other Ground (John Swing remix)
  3. Natural Instinct
  4. Flowing Through Time
Review: Otherwise known as one half of the Decas duo, Berlin-based Battista strikes out on his own with Records Hold Memories, an EP of thumping, raw techno tracks in the Restoration/Livejam vein, all recorded straight to tape. "From The Otherground" is all heaving kicks, a chugging angular bassline and distorted vocals buried deep in the mix; John Swing's remix meanwhile subtly flips the energy with a more rolling bassline with the kinds of loose drums that gather energy like a steam train. On the flip, "Natural Instinct" offers more unhinged 4/4, building up to a crescendo of cymbals and vocal noise; "Flowing Through Time" is even more manic, accelerating things up to 134BPM through a flurry of claps, snares and looping bass.

  1. Movimento (Conscio mix)
  2. Movimento (Inconscio mix)
Review: Battista, John Swing and EMG's first hook-up under the SPS moniker - the thrillingly hard-to-pigeonhole Sintomi Di Gravita 12" - was arguably one of 2014's most slept-on records. Here they join forces for round two, delivering another two tracks that neatly sidestep the accepted norms of house and techno. A-side "Movimento (Consico Mix)" is a wonky chunk of well-swung, jazz-flecked deep house, smothered in filters and tipsy chords. Flip for the Inconsico Mix of the same track, a brilliantly far-out fusion of odd electronics, glitchy rhythms, shimmering synths and bubbling found sounds. It's hardly dancefloor-centric, but it's certainly really, really good.

Cat: SPS 001. Rel: 14 Jul 14
Deep House
  1. Sintomi Di Gravita (Conscio mix)
  2. Sintomi Di Gravita (Inconseio mix)
Review: As if the Relative / Live Jam related gang needed another collective to keep their followers on their toes, here comes another project which surfaces on the newly minted Sperimentazioni Sonore imprint. There is a diverse spread between the two mixes of "Simtomi Di Gravita", kicking off with the "Conscio Mix" which flails around in a bath of fuzzy disco lick with pneumatic rhythms pushing along the heady tones. Meanwhile the "Inconseio" mix on the flip heads into noisier techno territory with a rugged kink in the groove hell bent on nailing any body shakers present to the ground. The textural work comes on thick and foreboding, making the perfect foil to the dreamy hooks of the A side.
