  1. Noiser
  2. Fred's Bells
Review: Matthew Dear's dark reign as Audion follows its continuous arc with two new songs, "Noiser" and "Fred's Bells". The seventh instalment in the Audion series features the deepest cuts yet, providing a disturbing concoction of dancefloor magic that is distinctively Audion. "Noiser" is strictly for the late-night crowd, finding the more twisted side of Audion. "Noiser" subversively creeps forward, only to gain momentum and tear the club apart in its mayhem. "Fred's Bells" is a sign of progression into more subtle, but no less incendiary tracks, echoing Audion's chart-topping remix for Hot Chip. A hypnotic bassline creeps along while low-level chattering fetters off in the distance. This is music for the morning after(-party), replenishing your energy, as tertiary rhythms emerge from the shadows, pulling you further into the spell.

Review: "Mouth to Mouth" struts in confidently, like a freshly-oiled sex robot. The murmurs of something wicked are on the horizon, but we're too busy dancing to that gorgeous nagging bassline. Things are moving along just fine until that distant hum rises to a fevered pitch and a massive buzz saw blade takes the track's head cleans off, spraying its black oil across the walls.

  2. Destroyer (FOLD Lean Tape version) (6:59)
Review: The master of wacky techno returns. Matthew Dear donned his notorious Audion moniker again for his first album in years under the guise. The Alpha LP featured about a dozen woozy and disorienting dancefloor destroyers and two selections are present here getting the remix treatment by two fellow innovators. The legendary Matthew Herbert remixes "Gut Man Cometh", scaling back the high-octane psychedelia of the original into a driving journey track with interestingly spiced up vocal samples. Aus Music regular FOLD turns "Destroyer" into a tough deep house stomper with emotive pads being supported by some gutsy stomp and shuffle.

  4. Motormouth (Matrixxman Replicant remix)
Review: After the most recent Audion single dropped last year, Spectral Sound have commissioned a host of top-drawer remixers to tackle Matthew Dear's alias for a devoutly modern approach to his tricky minimal style. Daniel Avery takes on "Sky" with a full-bodied analogue approach that melds his trademark emotive tones into a popping and sizzling version draped in ethereal elegance. Scuba meanwhile drops a taut and restrained version of the same track that plies a powerful bass note and some tumbling percussion. On the flip Matrixxman delivers two different version of "Motormouth" that respectively deal in chunky cyclical rhythms and trickier bleepy fare that do full justice to the original material.

Review:  Such has been the rise of Marquis Hawkes in recent times that this debut album must mark as one of the most anticipated house sets of 2016. Happily, Social Housing is a superb showcase not only for Hawkes' talents, but also his understanding of house music in its' many myriad forms. The album does include, of course, a sprinkling of jackin' workouts, but these are outnumbered by such thrilling chunks of loved-up positivity as the Tiger & Woods style loop funk of "Fantasy", the Theo Parrish-ish jazz fuzziness of "Summer Memory", and the cheeky, Todd Edwards style cut-up garage of "Something In Yr Head" [sic]. The album's most potent moment, though, is "I'm So Glad", a collaboration with Jocelyn Brown that already ranks among 2016's most potent tunes.

Review: The first Audion album in ten years shows that Matthew Dear's project has lost none of its raw ferocity. This is audible on opening track "Dem", where a droning groove ensnares wooden, clunky percussion and haunted vocals in its whirlpool-like cascade and then on the gated, distorted gnawing rhythms of "Destroyer". On other occasions, Dear sounds more comfortable flirting with classic sounds; "There Was a Button" is perfectly adequate, acid-led trancey techno from the 90s and "Gut Man Commeth" revisits the edgy minimalism of early Hawtin. However, no matter what influences he mines, there is a hyperactively jittery sound aesthetic at play, audible as much on the slow-motion hoover-led grind of "Bob the Builder" as it is on the rickety minimalism of "Napkin".

Review: Melodic, love torn, inspiring, euphoric and heartfelt are all words to help explain the emotional drive of the music Matthew Dear makes as Audion. They are all certainly applicable to new Kompakt jam "Dem Howl" too, and this is thanks in part to the vocals of Troels Abrahamsen, lead singer of Danish indie rock group VETO, who turns a moody bassline dub into a meaningful house production not too dissimilar to classic Junior Boys material. And who else better to remix a track like this than Kompakt legend Michael Mayer who keeps Abrahamsen's voice up front, adding a slight choral and extra chiming percussion. Kompakt striking all the right notes here.

Review: Known internationally for their cross-pollinations of pop and techno, Detroit's Matthew Dear and Berlin's Ellen Allien share a place at the fore of the underground; having toured North America together in 2005, the two agreed to transpose their dynamic to vinyl. Dear emphasizes the strongest elements of his Audion guise on "Just a Man", while Allien serves up a fine slice of noir electro with "Just a Woman". Between the two original pieces, each artist reworks the other. As a common space for two of techno's most creative minds, "Just a Man/Woman" is an unprecedented battle of the sexes where each side makes an iron-clad case.

Review: Spectral's first instalment of the "Death Is Nothing To Fear" series mixes the established with the new and embraces the international status the label's roster has earned after seven years of diverse, consistent output. The a-side is dedicated to Audion. The 12-minute "I Gave You Away" is a blistering mix of sprightly bass kicks and bubbly keypad melodies. On the flip, newcomer Pär Grindvik steps up the pace with the addictive, playful "Casio", while Bodycode weighs in with "Exciting Ride", a cut characterized by the spooky keyboard lines and disembodied vocal samples. "Death Is Nothing To Fear" proves that techno is still the most innovative and exciting dance music in the world.

"Dancing (Again!)" is a Saturday evening house bombshell with a poppy, above board edge, and its bouncy shells of bass jump to and fro between the "I wanna go dancing" vocals - instantly recognizable and surely a winner. Review: After the single first dropped as a digital release earlier in 2013, Tiga and Audion see their widely lauded collaboration committed to wax backed with two of the choice remixes from the follow-up package. The original takes a hypnotic stance that speaks to Matthew Dear's involvement, feeding in rhythmic elements pared down to subliminal bubbles and pulses while Tiga's deadpan vocal strikes the perfect tone for late-night seduction. Solomun's remix adds in strung-out piano tones and a fleshier beat laden with the Diynamic boss' trademark emotional craftsmanship. Breach meanwhile creates a rude atmosphere full of his brash basslines and intricate percussive details that screams peak-time potential.

Review: Some months after it initially appeared digitally, Tiga's latest frisson with Matthew 'Audion' Dear makes the transition to vinyl and comes packing some hefty remixes and some sublime Travolta-based artwork. "Fever" is of course a taster for Tiga's long awaited third album due out some time later this year and sounds like a perfect match between the Turbo boss's flirtatious tendencies and Dear's psychedelically charged approach as Audion. Complementing the original are remixes from the always excellent KiNK, Maceo Plex in Maetrix mode and Tom Trago, and a few listens has us thinking the Bulgarian maestro's elastic rave effort just pips it in matching the original's trippy mood.
