Anthology EP (180 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: MTRZ 011. Rel: 30 Apr 19
Minimal/Tech House
  1. Commited (7:12)
  2. Wave Hat (7:55)
  3. Modular Jam (7:20)
  4. Shuffle (7:44)
Review: The latest release on Raresh's Metereze label comes courtesy of Ionut Arapu, a Romanian scene stalwart whose minimalist techno releases are rarely less than rock solid. Between them, Arapu and Raresh apparently decided to call the EP "Anthology" due to the eclectic nature of the four tracks on show. It certainly ticks a lot of boxes for us, with the warm, loose, bass-heavy and spacey "Committed" being followed by the more sparse and unusual "Wave Hat", where mind-altering electronics and ghostly chords drift around an off-kilter groove. Turn to the B-side for "Modular Jam", a warm chunk of analogue tech-house hypnotism, and the groove-based antics of fittingly titled closing cut "Shuffle".

Cat: MEML 003. Rel: 05 Dec 14
Minimal/Tech House
  1. Aresa
  2. Esera
Review: Romanian producer Arapu has been doing well of late, with a string of releases on labels such as Gua Camole and Movida, and now he can add Memoria to the list with a self-assured two tracker that does everything a great minimal house record should. "Aresa" is a tough cookie in many ways, rolling with a techno purpose hidden away beneath the stripped down surface sounds, keeping just enough presence to work in a big room as much as an intimate space. "Esera" meanwhile swerves into more resolutely twitchy territory, finding that shuffling funk spring and supping heartily from it, creating a damn fine rhythm track in the process.

  1. Mdmamazing
  2. Chivoice
Review: After making his debut with the Slum EP on Bucharest-based Te Iubesc Records, Romanian producer Ionu? Arapu has spread his wings with a series of releases across a wedge of European labels such as Dusseldorf's Gua Camole and London crew Moss Co. This Mdmamazing 12" for Michael Peter & Siggi Schulz's Movida label is Arapu's most high profile to date and despite the slightly dubious title will probably land the Romanian some new fans too! The title cut is a powerful minimal dancefloor tool with a supple bassline driven groove and some nicely broken drums, whilst "Chivoice" finds Arapu in more abstract territory.

Hazard EP (heavyweight vinyl 12")
Cat: LINIAR 002. Rel: 19 Apr 16
Minimal/Tech House
  1. Hazard (12:11)
  2. So Doo (8:46)
  3. No More Space (7:11)
Review: Bucharest minimal hero Arapu presents the second release on his own new Liniar imprint and its business as usual really: trippy and hypnotic deepness for weirdo afterhours shenanigans. He's got some fierce competition that's for sure, but we think Arapu's one of the best of the bunch at the moment; as demonstrated on the title track with its infectious swing and darkly funked-up groove hypnotising you into submission. On the flip "So Doo" is probably the most restrained offering on here, letting its sombre sound design do most of the work backed by a gutsy stomp. Finally "No More Space" hammers the message home on this sinister and tunnelling groove which chugs away like a steamtrain through the reductionist darklands.

Pitfall EP (heavyweight vinyl 12")
Cat: LNR 001. Rel: 09 Nov 15
Minimal/Tech House
  1. Pitfall (12:27)
  2. Escape (7:03)
  3. Wasting (7:14)
Review: Arapu belongs to the now well established school of Romanian minimal techno, and his 12"s have always flown off the shelves in recent years. This might be because minimal techno on vinyl is hard to come by these days, but also because he's so damn in tune with the likes of Villalobos and the rest of that whole pioneering circle. He launches the new Liniar imprint with the clicks and low-end bumps of "Pitfall" - another one of those tunes that seems to have been sculpted from stone - followed by the much housier and slicker way of "Escape" on the B side. Last but certainly not least, "Wasting" goes for a more lo-fi approach and comes out with something of a Balearic gem for the downtempo sets. The likes of Jose Padilla would certainly have approved back in the days...

Wasted Ego (limited heavyweight vinyl 12")
Cat: UND 007. Rel: 27 Oct 17
Minimal/Tech House
  1. Virgo Ego (12:29)
  2. Wasted (9:38)
Review: Somewhat surprisingly, the Wasted Ego EP is Ionut Arapu's first 12" of the year. 2017 has been a quiet year for the normally prolific producer, who initially rose to prominence via well-regarded releases on Vant, Liniar [sic], Movida and Pressure Traxx. Predictably, both tracks on this vinyl return are rock solid club cuts. On the A-side you'll fine "Virgo Ego", a warm, rolling and bass-heavy early morning tech-house jam that makes great use of quirky spoken word samples and trippy electronic effects. Arguably even better is flipside "Wasted", where lilting chords and repetitive vocal snippets wrap themselves around a typically dense and percussive groove.

ENDZ 022 (splattered heavyweight vinyl 12")
Cat: ENDZ 022. Rel: 25 Jul 18
Minimal/Tech House
  1. Track 1 (10:17)
  2. Track 2 (10:43)
Review: For the latest missive on the Eastenderz imprint he established in 2014, East End Dubs has turned to a notoriously reliable source: Romanian minimal scene stalwart Arapu. It's the Bucharest-based producer's first missive of 2018 and also marks his Eastenderz debut. He begins in confident fashion on Side-A, wrapping distant percussion hits, atmospheric field recordings, bubbly electronics and deep space chords around a smooth but mind-altering groove rich in shuffling drum hits and hypnotic sub-bass. Turn to the flip for a bolder and arguably funkier excursion, where metallic hits and pot boiling electronic motifs spit and dart above a classically low-slung tech-house groove.

MTMLTD 002 (limited 180 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: MTMLTD 002. Rel: 17 Dec 18
Minimal/Tech House
  1. Arapu - "The Moment When I Move" (12:47)
  2. Crihan - "Versus" (10:20)
Review: After launching with a rock solid EP by Cally in July 2018, the More Than Music label returns to action with a double-header of dancefloor-focused fun. Arapu handles side A, serving up a wonderfully chunky, hypnotic and locked-in tech-house box jam built around sturdy kick-drums, funk-fuelled electronic glitches, restless bass and all manner of chopped and layered vocal samples. Over on side B, Cirhan continues on a similar theme, serving up a delightfully skewed fusion of booming sub-bass, swinging, off-kilter drums, creepy piano flourishes and moody, end-of-days aural textures. It's just as hypnotic as Arapu's A-side, just a little looser and woozier in feel.

Prima Expresie (limited double vinyl 12")
Cat: VARA 002. Rel: 29 Jul 13
Minimal/Tech House
  1. Arapu - "A2a Cu R"
  2. Dubsons - "Vezuviu"
  3. Faster - "De Ce"
  4. Costy & Gerardo - "Dulapa"
Review: Hailing from the new and mysterious Vara label, this four track double pack makes a bold statement about the intentions of the label, offering a decidedly ambitious product for a second release populated by relatively unknown producers. Lucky then that all the tracks on the release are worthy of their own side of wax as they plumb the depths of minimal tech house with fearless abandon. Arapu keeps the beat twitchy as he lets globulous sub bass design provide the warmth in the track, while Dubsons get into a lighter frame of mind with a breezy beat and atmospheric swirls of chord. Faster brings things back to a darker context with that fearful clang of church bells and plenty of decay and reverb around to fill in any untoward gaps, leaving it to Costy & Gerardo to finish the deal with a stoutly stripped down, cyclical burner for the deepest of dancefloor contemplators to get lost in.

  1. Arapu - "119mit"
  2. Lorenzo Chiabotti - "Urania"
  3. DeWalta - "Rain"
Review: Long standing Spanish minimal techno label Vinyl Club turn to another trio of producers concerned with subtle, intricate pathways to sustained shuffling grooves, with Arapu standing out with his grasp of the pared-down funky breakbeat trend that has been dominating Romanian output recently. Lorenzo Chiabotti has equally slender aesthetics at work, although his rhythm moves in a more typical house strut populated with fine slithers of found sound. DeWalta takes on a stance in line with his work on Vakant, letting dense atmospherics linger heavy around the restrained drum work. In all three instances the producers prove there's plenty of mileage in the minimal methodology yet.

  1. Mihigh & Arapu - "Indigen"
  2. Barac - "In Oglinda"
  3. Priku - "De Bun Augur"
  4. Sepp - "Nopti Tacute"
Review: New Romanian label Midi is making a bold entry into the hustle and bustle of the minimal breaks scene, snapping up some of the key players and giving them a side of vinyl each to get stuck into, all presented in a plush gatefold sleeve. Mihigh and Arapu collaborate on the intricate undulations of "Indigen", which pivots around a finely balanced selection of percussion and spooky blasts of sound. Barac holds down a steadier groove on "In Oglinda", using some choice jazz samples sparingly to create a truly eerie, Lynchian atmosphere. Priku brings a touch more peak time feistiness to "Be Dun Augur" as he works his own pattering drums into a strict and prominent roller perfect for the deeper kind of club, and then Sepp rounds the release off with the illustrious subtleties of "Nopti Tacute".
