  7. Other Worlds - "Codename ELD"
  8. Haku - "Chronos"
Review: Deep Space Orchestra's Use of Weapons label has always been a reliable source of analogue-heavy left of centre deep house, with each split EP, featuring tracks from a variety of like-minded producers, featuring a range of must-have nuggets. This expansive sixth release, with eight tracks spread across two slabs of wax, is no different. DSO's beautiful and surprisingly fragile "Mendoza" leads the way, with 7 Citizens calming, alien house groover "Fatum" close behind. Arguably best of all, though, is Other Worlds' "Coldname ELD", a sparse and bassy concoction blessed with some brilliant, Head High style pianos. It is, though, all good, with further impressive contributions from the Detroit-included Haku.

  1. Keep House In Your Mind
  2. Watson's Party Seven
Review: Fledgling imprint Praterei cut a swathe of enthusiasm and intrigue when their debut release Juno Jam dropped way back in August, with the names responsible still a mystery. Round two and the label is maintaining an air of mystique, with little to no additional information on whom exactly Michel Ferragosto and 7 Citizen are. The more resolute deep house heads might uncover the truth after some digging but we'd rather focus on the bottom heavy music. On "Keep House In Your Mind" Ferragosto cuts together a surfeit of vocal samples to form the title to a backdrop of spinal key stabs and a brilliantly raw procession of kicks and hi-hats. The same Gil-Scott Heron diatribe plundered by Moodymann and more recently Kanye West makes a brief appearance before the track drops into a scorching wash of emotive chords. On the flip 7 Citizens drops a more traditional deep house cut with "Watsons Party Seven" which is driven by shimmering synth melodies that resonate with warmth atop punchy drums, the track really finding it's natural groove after a brief vocal interlude.

Flying (12")
Cat: PRATEREI 006. Rel: 04 Mar 13
Deep House
  1. Snuff Crew - "Flying"
  2. 7 Citizens - "Perse"
  3. Chicago Skyway - "Shy Girl"
  4. Ethyl - "Push"
Review: Viennese label Praterei return in fine style with their sixth release sporting some true international talent from the house network. It's not a surprise to see Snuff Crew adopt an old school approach with lead track "Flying" indicative of the raw and wild style of house music the mysterious jack lovers have made their own over the years. Label co-owner 7 Citizens opts for a slightly deeper approach on "Perse" with a just about perceptible dark undertone beneath the nagging hook snares. Chicago Skywave is on superb form with the dizzying, broken house of "Shy Girl" with cascading rhythms that swagger around the channels like a drunk lurching through the grimey back streets of a nameless metropolis. secretsundaze man Ethyl closes proceedings with the tightly wound dubby house of "Push" which is made all the more memorable by the intermittent bursts of subterranean chords drenched in melancholy.
