Review: When celebrating significant landmarks, many labels get nostalgic. When it came to marking their 25th birthday, Planet Mu was never going to do that. Throughout its history, the label has looked forward, not back, and that's exactly what they've done with Planet Mu 25. The album's 15 tracks come from current members of the roster and are every bit as far-sighted and futuristic as you'd expect. It's a breathlessly brilliant romp, all told, taking in tracks that brilliantly mangle and mix elements of grime, footwork, acid, electronica, dubstep, techno, jazz and UK bass into sparkling, weighty and otherworldly new shapes. It's so good, in fact, that it could well be a late contender for the best compilation of 2020.

Review: Way back in 1997, the late, great Mika Vaino was asked to put together a compilation of his own works as O to be played at an exhibition in Milan. Unissued until now, the set has finally been posthumously released by Vaino's estate and regular home Sahko. It contaims three previously unheard tracks alongside more contemplative, softly spun classics and raw, highly experimental compositions. Highlights include the modular techno minimalism of 'Kaskaat', the icy ambience of 'Syvays', the slowly shifting chords and hushed electronic melodies of 'Radio', and the heart-aching, alone-in-the-snow wooziness of 'Kiteet (Part 2)'.

Review: In 1999, Dutch orchestra Metropole Orkest staged an epic performance in tribute to Brian Eno as part of that year's Holland Festival. Based on 1992 album The Shutov Assembly but also featuring versions of tracks plucked from other Eno sets, the performance featured extraordinary classical translations of some of the ambient pioneer's darkest and most mesmerising works. This CD presents the recording of the performance almost in full, offering up stunning new interpretations of tracks such as 'Triennale' (here rendered as a melancholic, cinematic masterpiece), 'Iced World' from 1997's The Drop (spy movie soundtrack jazz on a grand scale), and mid-1970s favourite 'Another Green World', which provides a sublime, swelling conclusion.

Review: 'Orchestral Studies Collectanea' consists of seven previously unreleased orchestral movements (Tracks 1-7) in addition to remastered variations of arrangements that originally appeared on, 'Orchestral Tape Studies' and 'Orchestral Tape Studies [Tyresta Reworks]'. Orchestral Studies Collectanea is a compilation arranged and produced by zake with additional production by close friend Tyresta. OSC is a group of richly layered movements of fragmented orchestral loops, paying homage to minimalist symphonic composers and orchestras. zake and Tyresta incorporate field recordings and faint drone billows to accompany these selected samples of orchestral loops. With an emphasis on tone and recurrent murmurs, these arrangements offer approximately 48 minutes of delicate repetition, reticent sound treatments, and subtle manipulations. OSC is intended for low-volume listening.

Review: Second time around for Scott Morgan AKA Loscil's seventh album, Coast/range/arc, which first hit record stores way back in 2011. It's an album worth revisiting - or checking for the first time, for that matter - since it offers a near perfect distillation of the ambient producer and sound artist's now trademark sound. Full of beautiful, icy and slowly unfurling compositions that tend towards the meditative, the set is notable for Morgan's seemingly innate ability to craft immersive soundscapes out of a mixture of hazy drone textures, gaseous electronic chords, soft-touch melodies, atmospheric field recordings and simmer, near cinematic musical movements. This reissue also includes the previously unheard 'Black Tusk (Descent)', a deliciously woozy piece of Biosphere-esque arctic ambience.

Review: Steve Hauschildt's profile has been on a steady rise since he moved from his long time home of Kranky to Ghostly International. It was a logical move to partner up with the Ann Arbor label as it encouraged the emotional side of his regal ambient pieces to shine through in line with the sensitive tones of other Ghostly alumni (Tycho, Telefon Tel Aviv, Shigeto, for example). On his second album for the label, Hauschildt sounds more moving than ever, his winsome compositions reaching towards bigger spaces especially on rhythmically charged tracks like "Subtractive Skies". This is no drastic departure from his established identity, but rather a considered evolution towards a new space in which his muse can reside.

Review: Ostgut Ton A-Ton completes their trilogy of compilations charting the early-to-mid-'90s ambient techno work of British producer Luke Slater under the 7th Plain alias. As with its predecessors, the eight included tracks offer a mixture of previously released fare from the project's heyday and music that's sat on dusty DAT tapes for well over two decades. Highlights come thick and fast, from the sun-bright sci-fi melodies, sustained ambient chords and bubbly acid lines of "Time Melts" and the Black Dog-ish shuffle of "Reality of Space", to the booming, club-ready "Lost", drowsy IDM cut "Think City" and the intergalactic, stretched-out bliss of brilliant closing cut "Seeing Sense".

Review: To tie in with the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 moon landings, Brian Eno has decided to put out a new edition of his decidedly spacey 1983 ambient album "Apollo: Atmospheres & Soundtracks", which started life as the soundtrack to a long-forgotten documentary about NASA's space program. The edition is rather special, not only because it contains a remastered version of the original set created by Eno, his brother Roger and regular collaborator Daniel Lanois, but also because it contains a second disc of previously unheard material. This is not old, though, but rather brand new recordings - described as "new interpretations of the film soundtrack" - made by the Lanois and the Eno brothers late last year in a similar style. In a word: essential.

Review: Brian Eno is celebrated for lots of reasons - his pioneering ambient work, his role as a producer-for-hire on some landmark records by other people - but previously his role as a soundtrack composer is not one of them. This is slightly odd, because Eno has provided music for countless films and television shows over the last four-and-a-bit decades, as this excellent retrospective of soundtrack highlights proves. Kicking off with his creepy, chiming theme from Channel 4's Top Boy, the album moves between experimental soundscapes ('Blood Red, from a BBC documentary on Francis Bacon), swelling and quietly symphonic synthesizer sounds ('Prophecy Theme', an intergalactic-sounding piece from the Dune soundtrack), languid Americana ('Beach Sequence', from his Passengers project), and the kind of lucid ambient compositions Eno probably knocks out in his sleep.

Review: Niklas Paschburg debuted in style with the moving "Oceanic" album on a !K7 sublabel back in 2018, and now he returns with more of his modern classical orchestrations. Very much in the vein of Frahm, Hopkins and the like, he deftly fuses beautifully composed orchestrations with electronic in subtle but powerful ways. On "Svalbard", the piano is front and centre a lot of the time, which lends the album a defined character. The album moves through a surge of different emotions from the taut (on "Cyan") to the scenic (on "Little Orc"), but Paschburg's deft touch on the keys remains the strongest sender. "Season Shift" is rightly an album centerpiece that tastefully balances occasional flourishes of electronica in amongst the classicisms.

Review: Since its in initial release in 1997, Zauberberg has often been talked of in hushed terms. It was Wolfgang Voigt's second album as Gas and is now considered the most complete and detailed execution of his now trademark sound - a heady, hazy blend of treacle-think ambient textures, hissing vinyl crackle, faintly foreboding chord sequences and manipulated neo-classical loops. As this welcome reissue proves, what marks it out from later Gas albums is the fact that it's not wholly ambient, with many of Voight's included soundscapes featuring sparse, hypnotic rhythms, most built around subdued, heavily filtered kick-drum patterns. As a result, it's remains a mesmeric and genuinely mind-altering affair.

Review: Trailed as a direct sequel to his previous solo album, 2017's "Avanti", "Volume Massimo" sees Nine Inch Nails member Alessandro Cortini offer up another immersive trip through droning guitar textures, repetitive synthesizer motifs, exotic sitar parts and fuzzy electronics. It's effectively a series of "maximal" instrumental soundscapes with sounds so large and layered they rise above the "meditative" tag pushed by Mute's PR team. This is no criticism, though, just a reflection that while contemplative at times, one of the most joyous things about the album is Cortini's ability to build thrilling walls of sound.

Review: Almost four years have passed since the last studio set from Pantha Du Prince (real name Hendrik Weber), a producer whose output has steadily shifted from club-focused minimal techno to more melodious, atmospheric and experimental electronic compositions. "Conference of Trees" continues this trend, delivering a ten track set whose melodious, otherworldly and alluring compositions were partly created using all manner of specially-created wooden instruments (some of which he hand built himself). While it's undeniably a Pantha Du Prince album - even with the assistance of wood-created sounds there is still a reliance on his usual electronic approaches - "Conference Of Trees" feels somehow different, more human even. Given the spellbinding results, it's a departure we approve of.

Review: Since the release of Laraaji's fine career retrospective, Celestial Music 1978-2011, in 2013, there's been renewed interest in the work of the autoharp-playing ambient spirtualist. It's perhaps surprising, then, that it has taken this long for someone to reissue his Vision Songs Volume 1, the former Brian Eno collaborator's first self-released cassette album. In many ways, it's atypical of his work, featuring as it does "devotional and inspirational songs", rather than new age instrumentals. It was recorded in 1984 and sees the one-time actor combining lo-fi Casio synthesizer chords and melodies with his own soulful, life-affirming lyrics and copious amounts of tape delay. It remains a fine work, with the constant warmth of original tape his offering a reminder of the set's decidedly lo-fi roots.

Review: Having introduced Spanish ambient pioneer Suso Saiz to a wider audience via last year's superb Odisea retrospective, Music From Memory has scored a new album from the long-serving musician and composer. Rainworks was recorded over a two-month period in early 2016, and sees Saiz evocatively join the dots between Jonny Nash style guitar-led ambience, gently undulating, piano-driven mood pieces, evocative collages of found sounds and field recordings (see opener "From Memory & The Sky"), and ghostly, effects-laden ambient. He also finds time to pay tribute to Steve Reich style American minimalism on the cyclical brilliance of "They Don't Love Each Other".
