Chronicles I
Chronicles I (2xLP)
Cat: ATONLP 01. Rel: 02 Aug 16
  1. Boundaries (6:38)
  2. Extra (the 7th Plain remix) (8:04)
  3. Grace (3:25)
  4. Surface Bound (8:42)
  5. The Super 8 (7:59)
  6. T Funk States (6:37)
  7. Slip 7 Sideways (4:24)
  8. Chords Are Dirty (4:36)
Review: A-Ton is a new label from Berlin heavyweights Ostgut Ton, designed to focus on "ambient, archive and alternative music". They've pulled off something of a coup for this debut release, persuading British techno legend Luke Slater to open up the archives of his '90s intelligent techno project, The 7th Plain. Chronicles I boasts a mixture of previously released and unheard material, which moves from glistening, outer-space ambience (the near perfect "Boundaries", "Grace"), to fizzing Motor City techno ("T-Funk Statues"), via intergalactic intelligent techno, dusty downtempo grooves (the jazzy hip-hop rhythms and ambient electronics of "Slip 7 Sideways"), and melodious IDM.

Bamboo Music
Bamboo Music (heavyweight vinyl LP + insert)
Cat: AI 15. Rel: 06 Aug 19
  1. Dream/Dron Sax/Desert/Africa/Rioja/A View/Eleven (19:25)
  2. Continue/Moments/Swamp/Lion/Seagull (19:37)
Review: Astral Industries have shaped a sizable portion of their catalogue around the work of The Chi Factory, and so it continues with this release from core member of the Dutch group, Jacobus Derwort. "Bamboo Music" gathers together some of the music Derwort released on tape back in 1987 along with other unearthed curios, all stitched together into the mystical trip that defines all Chi Factory releases. This is Fourth World voyaging for the deep divers, an evocative delight from imagined lands steeped in organic warmth and cosmic mysticism, and we should be very thankful Astral are on hand to do the fine job of pressing it to wax, not least in those fantastic Theo Ellsworth sleeves.

Review: Coming from a classical piano background, Nils Frahm has certainly turned into one dark dude! Having already released plenty of works on a myriad of labels, he lands on London-based Erase Tapes with what is probably one of his wildest pieces of music to date. Spanning 12 tracks in total, Frahm goes from joyful odes to the piano over to psychedelic synth improvisations to what sound like intricate tape manipulations, nutty drum-machine programming and a bag full o'field recordings. If you're into the idea of Tchaikovsky on some serious amounts of stimulants then look no further, this guy is shaping the way pianos are played...

AIA: Alien Observer (reissue)
Cat: KRANK 224. Rel: 29 Oct 19
  1. Moon Is Sharp (6:56)
  2. Alien Observer (3:56)
  3. Vapor Trails (8:56)
  4. She Loves Me That Way (Second Heart Tone) (8:34)
  5. Mary On The Wall (6:10)
  6. Come Softly (4:29)
Review: Back in 2011, Liz Harris - better known under her artistic alias Grouper - released a pair of albums under the "AIA" banner. The first, "Dream Loss", has already been reissued; here, they offer up the second, "Alien Observer". It partly explores similar sonic territory, where distant-sounding recordings of Harris' voice, synths and evocative guitars are smothered in reverb, field recordings and noise, but also includes a few sharper, more defined moments. Amongst these, we'd suggest checking the sublime title track, a beautifully becalmed and spaced-out fusion of Harris' vocals and delay-laden guitar arpeggio scales, and closer "Come Softly", an even more beautiful and minimalist piece that's nothing less than stunning.

Cold Radiance
Cat: FIELD 020. Rel: 05 May 16
  1. Transmission (7:21)
  2. Distant Planet (4:20)
  3. Ascneding (7:26)
  4. Passage (8:41)
  5. The Fountains (6:31)
  6. A Fall Of Moondust (10:40)
  7. Voices Of The Sky (5:09)
  8. Purple (7:26)
Review: Long players from L'estasi Dell'oro, D.A.R.F.D.H.S and Kartei signalled a move into artist albums from Dutch label Field that felt wholly right, and they've scored a real treat again in securing this Cold Radiance LP from Japanese artist IORI. Known for a potent brand of deep techno that has seen releases on Semantica, Prologue and DJ Nobu's Bitta label, Iori Asano is offered the chance to explore something different on this, his second album. Encourage to dabble in more explicitly ambient and experimental composition, Asano positively revels in this creative freedom for an eight-track album he himself likens to an "aerial sci-fi movie soundtrack." The gravelly sonic tones of opener "Transmission" sets the scene for what turns out to be one of the most enjoyable ambient techno albums of 2016 so far.

  1. Mr Henri Rousseau's Dream (12:06)
  2. Crossing (8:51)
  3. Trompe-l'oeil (5:32)
  4. Catastrophe (15:16)
Review: ** REPRESS ALERT ** Midori Takada is a composer, multi-percussionist and theater performer from Japan. She performs solo on marimba and other percussive instruments and has released two solo albums, in particular Through The Looking Glass - which originally released in 1983 and gets a much needed remaster here by WeRelease/MusiquePourLaDanse/MentalGroove. Takada's renewed success is a true product of our times: her music was 'discovered' via YouTube's algorithm a few years back which amassed millions of views and created a new generation of fans enamoured by her amazing work. In the wake of the YouTube video's popularity, she has toured Europe multiple times and other albums by her have also since been reissued in the last year.

Ruckverzauberung Live In London
  1. I (12:57)
  2. II (14:38)
  3. III (15:03)
  4. IV (16:51)
Review: Kompakt main man and ambient maestro Wolfgang Voigt served up some of his finest work yet on the Ruckverzauberung album a couple of years ago. Now Astral Industries treats us to a live recording of said album, taken from Voigt's performance at Hackney venue St Johns Church in March last year. The dark and brooding soundscapes of this modern classical exploration take on a new and dynamic dimension as his immersive compositions of haunting, densely layered strings and sinister swirling pads transport you to another world, behind the mirror. A fine release from Astral Industries.
