Review: Two years ago, Jon Hassell made more than a few jaws drop with "Listening To Pictures (Pentimento Volume 1)", the genre-bending trumpeter and composer's first studio album in nine years. On that album, he effortlessly updated his trademark "Fourth World" sound - a decidedly cosmic, impossible-to-pigeonhole mix of traditional, otherworldly, exotic and cutting-edge sounds - for a new era. He takes a similar approach on this "companion album", somehow fusing experimental jazz, disparate global sounds, ambient, electronica and digi-dub in a myriad of thrilling, boundary blurring ways. It's a startling piece of work and one that defiantly rewards repeat listens, but then we expect nothing less from someone of Hassell's skill and standing. Recommended.

Review: Since the release of Jon Hassell's last album in 2009, there's been an upsurge in interest in the "Fourth World" style he pioneered alongside Brian Eno way back in 1980. It seems rather fitting, then, that the 81 year-old trumpeter turned experimentalist has returned to show the pretenders how it should be done. Listening To Pictures (Pentimento Volume 1) is every bit as alluring as you'd expect, with Hassell delivering thrilling new soundscapes that pull the Fourth World template (think combinations of American minimalism, ethnic styles from around the world, advanced electronics and manipulated trumpet sounds) in a variety of directions. It's in turns trippy, hypnotic, beautiful, poignant and otherworldly, with each ambient composition being accompanied by another where Hassell draws influence from contemporary IDM or drowsy experimental jazz.

Review: Reissues don't come more significant than this. Jon Hassell's work new and old has been enjoying plentiful appraisal in recent years, with his outlook on Fourth World music finding fresh relevance with a modern crop of artists. While much of his catalogue has been given a fresh lease of life, they've been saving one of his most seminal works. Vernal Equinox was originally released in 1978, one of Hassell's first albums alongside Earthquake Island. It's essentially the blueprint for outernational music - a heady brew of global signifiers stewing together in one unclassifiable pot marked out only by Hassell's inimitable trumpet style. From ambient heads to sonic explorers, you won't want to miss the chance to own this most precious of albums.

Review: Soon Jon Hassell will release a freshly re-mastered reissue of his groundbreaking debut album, "Vernal Equinox". Before that arrives, there's the small matter of this re-mastered pressing of another classic LP from his expansive discography. "Flash Of The Spirit" was created in collaboration with Farafina, a group of musicians from Burkina Faso whose extensive contributions undoubtedly shaped the outcome. Rich in West African percussion, enlightened horns, alien synthesizer sounds and group vocals, the album is undoubtedly more up-tempo in tone than some of Hassell's "Fourth World" work, despite the presence of a number of sublime ambient cuts. For that reason alone, it's essential listening.

Review: Since first emerging in 2006, Tokyo experimentalist Chihei Hatakeyama has been scarily prolific, releasing no less than 30 albums - mostly solo, but some with collaborators - on a dizzying variety of labels. On Moon Light Reflecting Over Mountains, his third full-length for Australia's Room 40 imprint, the Japanese producer once again blends becalmed, droning textures with quietly evolving melodies, effects-laden instrumentation, and an overriding sense of melancholy. You'll find plenty of My Bloody Valentine style shoegaze guitars buried in the mix, as well as heart-aching piano motifs, evocative field recordings and pads that seem to stretch on to infinity. The results are, for the most part, gentle and magical, like La Bradford jamming with Gigi Masin.

Review: Steve Hauschildt's profile has been on a steady rise since he moved from his long time home of Kranky to Ghostly International. It was a logical move to partner up with the Ann Arbor label as it encouraged the emotional side of his regal ambient pieces to shine through in line with the sensitive tones of other Ghostly alumni (Tycho, Telefon Tel Aviv, Shigeto, for example). On his second album for the label, Hauschildt sounds more moving than ever, his winsome compositions reaching towards bigger spaces especially on rhythmically charged tracks like "Subtractive Skies". This is no drastic departure from his established identity, but rather a considered evolution towards a new space in which his muse can reside.

Review: "Anoyo", Tim Hecker's latest must-check album, was apparently designed as a companion piece to its predecessor, 2018's "Konoyo". Like that album, it was inspired by his desire to fuse his brand of experimental electronica and wayward ambient music with the sounds of "gagaku" - a form of Japanese classical music famed for being played at the Far East nation's Imperial Court. In practice, that means recordings of traditional Japanese instruments and drums chopped, sliced, looped, mangled and reversed, fused with Hecker's own spacey ambient electronics and hazy electronic textures. It's a unique recipe, but one that results in a string of sublime, otherworldly compositions that just get better with each successive listen.

Review: While Greek producer Hior Chronik tends to be at his best when pushing boundaries, he never forgets the fundamental role played by melody. It can be heard in his slowly shifting ambient pieces and becomes even more prevalent when he veers towards neo-classical territory. "Blind Heaven" sits in the latter category. While atmospheric and otherworldly - thanks in part to his judicious use of drone style textures and spaced-out experimental sounds - the album's main calling card is the quality of the orchestration and the slow creep of his increasingly intense arrangements. It's genuinely emotive stuff, with the overriding themes being melancholy, anger and regret.

Review: Blending elements of ambient, abstract experimentalism, minimalism and modern classical, Yutaka Hirose's sole LP - 1986's "Nova + 4" - has become something of an in-demand item in recent years. Here it gets the reissue treatment, allowing those of us without deep pockets to wallow in its evocative charms. It's an intriguing affair, with Hirose drifting between beguiling (if unusual) soundscapes (see "Nova", where metallic chimes and gentle piano motifs unfurl over sustained ambient chords), sublime minimalist ambient (the echoing melodies of "In The Afternoon" and cascading bliss of "Through The Windows"), slow burn new age ("Taiko", "Humming The Sea") and deliciously experimental sound collages ("Epilogue").
