To Be Free (12")
Cat: LMNKV 105. Rel: 21 Feb 19
Broken Beat/Nu Jazz/Nu Soul
  1. To Be Free (6:41)
  2. Doing Our Own Thing (9:12)
Review: Back in November 2018, Oli Stewart AKA Casbah 73 delivered his most wholehearted tribute to the disco era yet, the brilliant "Love Saves The Day". On "To Be Free", he continues in a similar vein, doffing a cap to the pioneers of the Philly Soul sound via cut-glass strings, crunchy Clavinet lines, tasty electric piano solos, walking bass and a lead vocal from Angela (Angie) Gooden that stirs memories of disco divas of old. Stewart and his cohort of musicians go a little wild on the mostly instrumental disco-funk flipside, an exercise in dueling solos, lusty Latin horns, flanged guitars and heavy percussion that will get you hot under the collar for nine, all-action minutes. Brilliant stuff from start to finish from the experienced producer: don't sleep on this one.

Broken Beat/Nu Jazz/Nu Soul
  1. Jesus Boogie (2:29)
  2. Cachaca (4:32)
Review: Matasuna's latest must-have release comes courtesy of Dubben, an artist whose tasty, dub-fired mid-2000s reworks of Afro-Cuban and Latin tracks remain some of G.A.M.M.'s most potent moments. This is the producer's first release of any sort for nearly five years and continues in a similar vein. Check first A-side "Jesus Boogie", a samba-soaked, dub-funk fuelled revision of what sounds like a mid-1970s Brazilian MPB workout. Sweatier flavours are provided on B-side cut "Cachaca", where he dubs out and tools up a punchy affair that boasts a killer horn part reminiscent of The Champs classic "Tequila".

  1. We Are Here To Party (4:33)
  2. Loving You (4:25)
Review: Athens Of The North return to the disco motherland by way of this scorching groove doublet from Canadian troupe Gratitude. "We Are Here To Party" lives up to its name with vibrant horns and a thumping deep funk focus. Flip for "Loving You", as the name suggests there's a smoother tone and message at play as the band ease us into something a little comfier. Less of a B, more of an AA. Show some gratitude for the tireless AOTN crew!

Techno
  1. Light Year Flight
  2. 1992
  3. Homey Trinitron
Review: You have to admire Alex "Omar" Smith's work rate. He's been slinging out regular releases now for the best part of a decade and shows no sign of slowing down. "1992" is his second EP of 2019 and contains a trio of contrasting cuts in his distinctive, hardware-driven sound. Perhaps the biggest surprise is closing cut "Homey Trinitron", a techno-tempo workout that wraps fuzzy, lo-fi synth motifs around weighty and distorted, ghetto-house influenced drums. He provides a chunk of loose but locked-in deep house drowsiness (see the warm, shuffling and punchy title track), as well as a cheery, piano-driven A-side that's as warm, rush-inducing and anthem-like as anything he's released to date.

  1. Fat Purple Figs (5:55)
  2. Stigma (5:47)
  3. Sylo (5:12)
  4. Hidden (5:07)
Review: Headstrong resident Randomer returns for a four-track solo mission after inaugurating the label by contributing tracks (alongside fellow resident Clouds) to the imprint's compilation style debut EP. The London-based producer is in fine form throughout, peppering a tough-as-teak techno groove with stabbing, UK funky style motifs on "Fat Purple Figs" before spreading fear and panic via the no-holds-barred peak-time intensity of "Stigma". He barely calms down on side B, offering up sharp trance style stabs and booming techno drums on "Sylo" and more tense, panicked intensity on the rave-influenced closing cut "Hidden". This, too, bears far more influence from the stab-happy world of trance than you might possibly expect.

  1. Make Up Your Mind (4:29)
  2. You Are My Everything (3:22)
Review: We've had less than two years to recover from the unearthing of Hidden Stash by Athens Of The North when along comes Family Groove with the promise of another lost album from the debauched Chicago funk crew Rasputin's Stash. Entitled Stash it's due in April and the hype starts here with these two beautiful soul funk adventures. "Make Up Your Mind" rides on a sleazy fuzzy groove and peppy horns while "You Are My Everything" hits more of a classic triumphant horn and harmony led vibe not dissimilar to "I See Your Face" on their second album. April can't come soon enough.

Funk
  1. Tell The Truth (2:28)
  2. Because I Love You (2:29)
Review: Absolute scorching stuff from one of the most dominant gospel voices in 60s funk. Originally released on Giant and Calla respectively (and licenced, remastered and released with Shirley's total blessing), "Tell The Truth" is a raw bluesy workout with fired up harmonies and brazen horns squeezing every bit of honesty from our souls, "Because I Love You" hits with a little more soul thanks to the big backing vocals and added melodic layers but strip it down to the bare bones and it's nothing but raw, unapologetic funk... And that's the truth!

Review: Here is the long awaited new single from Italian soul supergroup Change - some of you may recognise their classic "The Glow of Love" which featured the unmistakable vocals of then frontman Luther Vandross in 1980. After six successful albums throughout the 80's before disbanding and making a brief return in 2010, the group's new single "Hit Or Miss" will appear on their first album in 38 years: Love 4 Love which is produced by Change alumni Davide Romani Mauro Malavasi, it's got the same kind of life-affirming soul power you've come to love from the outfit, and they've still got the knack for a great tune - listen for yourself!

  1. Love Freeze (DJ Spinna Re-Freak) (8:57)
  2. Love Freeze (long version) (5:44)
Review: In its original, hard-to-find "long version" form, First Choice's "Love Freeze" is one of the greatest chunks of soaring Philadelphia Soul/early disco around. It was recorded and released - initially in edited form - in 1975. You can find the elusive "Long Version" on the flipside of this essential reissue, which is headed up by an even more epic "Re-Freak" by the effervescent DJ Spinna. Clearly re-mixed from the original master tapes, his near ten-minute version builds slowly, breaks down in the middle, builds up again and finishes with an impressively dubbed-out conclusion. It actually sounds like the sort of floor-focused late '70s remix with which Tom Moulton made his name. That, of course, is no bad thing.

  2. Mark Broom - "Jungle" (5:21)
  3. Floorplan - "He Can Save You" (Re-Plant) (8:53)
Review: Some tip-top Transatlantic business here, as EPM Music brings together Motor City legend Robert Hood AKA Floorplan, and veteran UK techno producer Mark Broom. There's a treat on side A as Broom finally allows us access to one of his secret weapons: a previously dubplate-only remix he did of the Floorplan gospel-techno throbber "Never Grow Old". Broom's version is tough and percussive, but also makes great use of rumbling bass, restless organ stabs and glassy-eyed late night rave riffs. Broom's own techno jack-track "Jungle" - a blizzard of distorted percussion and wild electronic noises - opens side B, before Hood offers up a chunky "Re-Plant" of classic Floorplan roller "He Can Save You". It not only features spoken word preacher-man vocals, but also a mind-altering riff reminiscent of Lil' Louis classic "French Kiss".

Coldwave/Synth
  1. Run For My Honey (4:00)
  2. Run For My Honey (Lexx & Kejeblos remix) (3:08)
Review: For their latest trip into musical paradise, Zurich's Phantom Island crew has turned to debutants The Gagosians, a trio made up of former Soulphiction guest vocalist Suzana Rozkosny, A.C. Kupper (Guitar) and Kay-Zee (Synths). In its original form "Run For My Honey" is a slightly creepy but hugely enjoyable 4-minute chunk of no-wave wonkiness, with Rozkosny's strutting, post punk style vocals rising above lo-fi drum machine beats, surf-rock style guitar loops and elongated organ chords. On the B-side, Label co-founders Lexx and Kejeblos provide a stellar remix that drags the track further towards skewed, Balearic-minded electrofunk territory. While many of the original instrumentation remains, their body-popping beats and thickset synth bassline give the cut a whole new dancefloor dimension.

  2. Harlequin Fiasco (In Flagranti dub) (4:11)
Review: Newcomer Finnian Langham aka Kayroy is catching ears and hearts on dancefloors from his hometown Melbourne, Australia and beyond. What began as a love of the disco era has grown to encompass everything from obscure deep cuts of 80's synthpop to trippy acid tinged techno. It all comes down to his love of a good tune, and the pursuit of a good boogie on Harlequin Fiasco - following up releases on Whiskey Disco and Sour Edits, the album comes courtesy of French label Hotfoot and is a spaced-out boogie down jam that made us fans from the first beat. We're also loving side B where Swiss duo In Flagranti explores the space between the beats on their trippy dub rendition.

Review: It's been two years since Asking For Trouble founder Keith "Radioactive Man" Tenniswood inaugurated the "L-R" project alongside London Modular Alliance member Simon Lynch and Monoak man Johnny Oakley. This sophomore EP is every bit as essential as their 2017 debut on null+void Recordings. Check first the bubbling acid lines, rolling electro beats, 8-bit melodies and rumbling bass of "Rings", before immersing yourself in the deep space electro weird-out that is the weighty EP highlight "Doctor Dark". Over on side B you'll find two more throbbing workouts: the high-tempo acid-electro insanity of "Where Them Lights Are" and the Drexciya-meets-Cybotron brilliance of "Dinky's Tone".

  1. Spirit Of Love (4:41)
  2. Lucumi, Macumba, Voodoo (3:26)
Review: Given the vastness of his back catalogue, you'd think there would be plenty of re-issue-friendly gold buried in Eddie Palmieri's discography. "Spirit of Love", first released as a single in 1978, certainly ticks a lot of boxes: the spiraling, disco-era chunk of boogaloo/jazz-funk fusion remains popular on specialist dancefloors - especially jazz-dance ones - and original copies frequently change hands online for well over 50 quid. Like the original 7", this edition of the singles also comes backed with the sweaty Brazilian style jazz brilliance of "Lucumi, Macumba, Voodoo", which also happens to be the title track of the LP that "Spirit of Love" was plucked from.

  4. ThatManMonkz - "Radiation Steppa" (5:51)
Review: A double dose of goodness here, as Whiskey Disco regulars Pontchartrain and thatmanmonkz serve up two tasty new re-edits apiece. It's the former who handles side A. He begins with the breezy, tropical-sounding disco stomp of "La Magie" - all punchy horns, classic disco bass, fizzing synth lines and glassy-eyed female vocals - before brilliantly reworking a suitably obscure disco/jazz-funk instrumental (the suitably spacey "Hey Mariposa"). Arguably even better is "Luh Me On Mi Celly", the low-slung, stretched-out dub disco revision that counts as thatmanmonkz's first contribution to the EP. His second, "Radiation Steppa", is a fizzing, synth-heavy disco-boogie number blessed with passionate male group vocals.

Review: There has been a renewed interest around the work of veteran British producer Asad Rizvi's alias Silverlining, so much so that he has decided to kickstart the project again. His new offering "6am Cab To Leyton" on Talman features an infectious swing-fuelled shuffle that is intoxicating and hypnotic enough to be played at any decent afterhours party. The remixes on the flip come courtesy of Fuse London main man Enzo Siragusa, who delivers a trippy minimal rendition that is equally suited to Sunday morning style shenanigans, while Frenchman Sweely (Concrete/Distant Hawaii) takes the track into moodier territory.

Review: Norwegian producer Henning Severud AKA Telephones has decided to launch his own label. Fittingly, he handles the imprint's debut himself, dipping into his archive to serve up three tracks recorded at different times between 1998 and 2018. Our pick of a warm, colourful and loved-up bunch is "Aquatrak (FM AM Mix)", where jangling, Balearic house style piano riffs and dreamy chords splash around atop a chunky disco bassline and rolling drums. The quality threshold remains high throughout, though, with the '90s New Jersey-influenced deep house flex of "Amerikadegari (453-459 Mix)" and the late '80s Italian deep house vibes of "Hurricane (Purple Mix)" being almost equally as good.

Review: Originally released back in 1984, and regularly heard in underground clubs at the time such as Hamburg's legendary club Front, "Kairo" was the one and only EP by the enigmatic Udytu Utzelturk And His Male Harem - on the short lived King Kong Productions. The title track was considered controversial by some, with an Imam singing over an Italo disco style groove. On the flip "Kozak 2000" is a sleazy funk jam. As part of Running Back's 2019 reissue here, Gerd Janson has called upon Boris Dlugosch - one time resident of the aforementioned Front - to deliver the exclusive re-edit duties - and he does a pretty fine job of extending it out in respectful fashion.

Review: Afrobeat revivalists Yaaba Funk are getting a welcome new lease of life here, as the Sterns Edits crew turns in a trio of fresh reworks from their largely overlooked 2010 album "Afrobeast".
